Norton Family time and web site restrictions not working - tray icon missing

Hi, I've discovered in the last few days that our son's account is apparently not being monitored or restricted for time and Web content. He's been able to stay online well past the nighttime curfew, and there's plenty of porn sites in his browsing history. He's using Google Chrome, Win7 HP 64-bit but not IE. This seems to have started around Feb. 4 or 5. I will check to see what version of the extension is running.

I've checked and verified that nf.exe is running on the machine, but the tray icon (lower right corner) is missing. At first I thought he had found another way to kill nf.exe, but that is apparently not the case.

Has anyone else seen this?

Re: Norton Family time and web site restrictions not working - tray icon missing

Hi jman4,

If you log onto your Norton Family account online, do you see the child is protected at Settings -> Profile as "XXX is protected"?  If not and you see "XXX is not protected", can you please uninstall/reinstall Norton Family on the PC to see if it helps?

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks Katie

Hi Katie,
I checked, and it's showing the child as "protected" on all computers.

Also, the versions appear to be the latest ones that were released around that date.

Hi jman4,

Can you also check the Windows accounts at Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts to see any accounts are not being monitored?  If the accounts are monitored, can you please uninstall/reinstall Norton Family,in case for some reason the program is not installed and configured correctly?

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Norton Family time and web site restrictions not working - tray icon missing

Hi Katie,

There are monitored and unmonitored accounts. I have noticed in the last couple of days that it started working again without me doing or changing anything. I am not sure what fixed it, as I had done several restarts during the time I was testing it. So, at this point, I will have to wait to see if it does the same thing again in the future.

Re: Norton Family time and web site restrictions not working - tray icon missing

Hi KatieQ,

Well, it seems there are still some nagging issues here. I noticed this morning that the child's account was not being locked at the curfew time. I was able to log in at 5 am this morning, and I got the popup in the lower right corner that NF was "monitoring the account" but there was no popup to block the account access. I restarted the computer, and it then was restricting access. I have not checked the running processes (no time this morning) but I will try that later to see if any of them were not running. Should I try uninstall/reinstall NF to see if that helps?

Re: Norton Family time and web site restrictions not working - tray icon missing

Hi jman4,

The program does block the child account when the time is up and they can’t disable the program unless they have the account email and password.  When the time is up or during a curfew period, the child would get an extra 60 seconds plus another 60 seconds while displaying a warning message with 60 seconds counting down.  After that,  the child is logged out of his/her account.  The child is allowed to log back to the PC for 60 seconds and receive another warning message with 60 seconds counting down to finish whatever he/she was doing .  Later, the behavior is repeated for the 3rd time,  so the child gets about extra 6 minutes, then he/she wouldn't be able to log back to the PC without the email address and password of the Norton Online Family account.

When you login at 5am, please wait for 1 minute to see if the first warning message comes up.

Thanks,

Katie

Re: Norton Family time and web site restrictions not working - tray icon missing

Hi Katie,

Thanks for the information. I will check to see what's going on and reply when I have more info.

I think the timeout periods are too long and perhaps too forgiving. I would like to see the grayed-out screen go darker or completely black, or make the popup window unmovable. It's possible today to move the popup off the bottom of the screen and keep reading whatever is on the screen (or perhaps even keep watching videos). Could you pass this on to the developers?

I also think it's possible to keep closing the window and relogging on for more than three times. I have watched our child do this multiple times for a half hour or more. He does not know the parental password or the computer admin password, and he's not changing the computer time setting either.

Re: Norton Family time and web site restrictions not working - tray icon missing

HI jman4,

I sure will pass your valuable feedback to the Norton Family team.

Some children log back to the PC using the few seconds right before the program logs them out.  Please add a long password for the child’s Windows account, so when the child logs back onto the PC diligently each time, it would create more work for the child to do it every few seconds.

Thanks

Katie

Re: Norton Family time and web site restrictions not working - tray icon missing

Hi KaiteQ,

I tried this, but apparently there is a copy/paste option that the child is using to type in the password, so one keystroke and it's done. I would still like to see a few simple improvements (listed earlier) that would eliminate the ability to constantly re-log in for a few more seconds of time.

Re: Norton Family time and web site restrictions not working - tray icon missing

Hi jman4,

When the warning message comes up, the screen is locked except the message screen.  I don't think you can copy/paste password on the screen.   Please let me know if you have another way to do so.

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks Katie
