No norton safe search in NIS 21.1.1.7

I've just downloaded NIS 21.1.1.7 (using "check for new version" and installing over my previous version (NIS 20.x.x.x)) to my Windows 8.1 laptop.

Seems fine, but there is no Norton Safe Search now in the Norton Toolbar on my browser (IE11). I notice that if I launch NIS and go to Settings...Web...Identity Safe...Configure...General, there is no longer an option to enable Norton Safe Search (as there was in NIS 21.1.0.18). Has this option now been removed in 21.1.1.7?

Re: No norton safe search in NIS 21.1.1.7

That setting (along with many others) was relocated into the Identity Safe applet...

Kind Regards,

Hi John,

Are you sure the settings screen in your post is from NIS 21.1.1.7?

The screenshot of my settings screen does not include an option to enable Norton Safe Search (see below).

It's as if that option is no longer available in 21.1.1.7.

Have you restarted your computer after doing the update? I updated to NIS 21.1.1.7, and the option is still there.

Re: No norton safe search in NIS 21.1.1.7

Hi n2009user27,

I'm a bit confused - you said you used "Check for new version" on a version 20.x.x.x laptop and then mentioned settings in v 21.1.0.18.  I know in the past you had updated to v 21 on a system - so is the laptop another system that had not been updated to v 21 yet?

If you go back and carefully read Tony's announcement it never says anything about using the check for new version option on a V 20 system - although I could see that possibly working, there may be something already in V 21.1.0.18 that is retained in the settings that is different than whatis retained in the v 20 settings and even though using the V 20 as a basis for the update in the Norton Update Center, yu are still in fact updating V 21.1.0.18 to v 21.1.1.7 - you are not updating v 20.x.x.x.

It may not make much sense, but if I remember correctly (in spite of my advanced age ), it seems like when v 21.0 first came out the Norton Safe Search option was missing from the General Settings and it was added by an update (possibly part of 21.1.0.18 ?) and by you updating a version 20.x.x.x it may have fell  thru the crack.

Have you tried to run LiveUpdate (rebooting if requested) until LiveUpdate responds "no updates found" (hoping to get that update) and also I'd try Support > Get Support run and see if that changes anything.

If no joy, as a last resort, I would suggest running the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool.

Please keep us informed on what you find.

Re: No norton safe search in NIS 21.1.1.7

Just another 2 cents worth...

This conversation has now shifted to talking to another of my pet peeves for the v21 products...  Since we (apparently) now have a potential for situations whereby can occur versioning errors between the main product and its associated sub-components (i.e., ID Safe), why isn't there an easily accessible (About Product) located somewhere within the Identity Safe applet - perhaps within Help?

It occurs to me that such info would be handy to quick check if these elements have somehow moved out-of-sync with one another...  After all, we can easily check to see if the currently installed browser plugins are the version(s) they should be, so why not have this ability for the ID Safe as well?

Kind regards,

John

Hi John,

That may be worth posting in the Product Suggestions board.

Thanks!

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: No norton safe search in NIS 21.1.1.7

Hi peterweb - Yes, I've (re)booted and shutdown my computer several times since updating to 21.1.1.7. Makes no difference.

Hi yank - Sorry for the confusion ... I have both a desktop pc running Windows 7 and a laptop running Windows 8.1. The Windows 7 pc has NIS 21.1.0.18 and this shows Norton Safe Search in the Norton toolbar on my browser (IE11). The Windows 8.1 laptop is the one that now has NIS 21.1.1.7 and which doesn't show Norton Safe Search on the Norton toolbar. This laptop used to have NIS 20.x.x.x, but when I chose "Check for new version" it installed it NIS 21.1.1.7. I just assumed that this was the latest version for Windows 8.1 machines - there was no option to update to a different 21.1.x.x version.

Yes, I've run LiveUpdate many times - I always run it manually immediately after booting my computer and before launching internet explorer, and I do keep running it until it says no updates found.

I tried your suggestion about Get Support, but it said it couldn't find any issues with my Norton installation.

So...the plot thickens! I'm not inclined to run the Norton Removal Tool and then reinstall NIS 21.1.1.7 because I only have one install left on my Norton 3-install licence and I'm not convinced that it will take account of removing my existing NIS and reinstalling it without using up that one remaining licence (and I don't want the hassle of getting Symantec to reinstate it).

To be honest, I can live without Norton Safe Search, but I was just curious to know why it wasn't showing on the Norton toolbar on my Windows 8.1 laptop.

Using the Norton Removal and Reinstall tool will not use up another activation from your account. It is a quick, safe way to refresh your installation. Even if you fully remove Norton, and you install on the same hardware, you do not get charged an activation.

To be honest, I can live without Norton Safe Search, but I was just curious to know why it wasn't showing on the Norton toolbar on my Windows 8.1 laptop.

Re: No norton safe search in NIS 21.1.1.7

Well, I eventually bit the bullet and used the NRT to remove NIS 21.1.1.7, and then reinstalled it. After a bit of faffing around and rebooting a few times, the Norton Safe Search is now showing in the Norton toolbar on my browser, And, by the way, it didn't use the final actvation on my 3-user licence. So thank you peterweb, your help was greatly appreciated - we got there in the end.
