How to protect computer after factory reset

After many years, I feel it's time to reset my computer to factory defaults and reinstall my software.  This will take the computer back to XP service pack 2 and Internet  Explorer 6, so there will be a lot of Windows updates to download.  I will also have to download Norton 360 and the latest dat files.  My concern is that my computer will be on the internet fully exposed during this process.  I did all this once before many years ago, and ended up with a collection of viruses by the time I had finished.

My question is, is there any way to protect my computer during this time?  Can I download Norton 360 now and store it on a CD to install before going online after the reset? Can I do the same with the dat files?  Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thank you for your help,

Re: How to protect computer after factory reset

Don't forget to make a backup (or export) of your identity safe logins to an external media before uninstall and re-install Norton 360.

XP SP3 you can download and install offline.

Update Windows XP 32bit to SP3

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package

File Name: WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe

Download Size: 316.4 MB

If you have a norton account, you can download your product from there:

Virus Definitions & Security Updates

Please check if you need the def's for a 32 or 64 bit pc!

Re: How to protect computer after factory reset

As long as you are behind a firewall and only go to official sites to update Windows and Norton (no surfing the web!), you should not be at risk.

Don't forget to check what security application might have come preinstalled on your system, how to uninstall it and how to cleanup after uninstalling (special tools we can point you to for most products),
