Accidentally Deleted Computer from Backup

I accidentally deleted a computer from backup before I assigned those files to my new PC.  Chat support told me I couldn't get them back.  I've seen in these forums that some people have been able to.  Does anyone know how?  Thanks.

Hi mabenh.

Not sure what you mean by "deleted a computer from backup".  Can you tell us what Norton product you are/were using and where the backup was held?

Re: Accidentally Deleted Computer from Backup

I had 2 laptops on Norton backup.  My Compaq CQ crashed.  I bought another latop and while I was installing Norton on the new one, I removed the crashed computer online from Norton backup before I reinstalled the files onto the new laptop, not realizing I was deleting the files as well.  I was hoping that Norton keeps their system records for a few weeks and that the removed files can be found.

Re: Accidentally Deleted Computer from Backup

Hello again mabenh.

I assume that the product in Norton Online Backup and I am not fully conversant with that.  Given the possible time issues here I would recommend that you contact the free Norton 24 hrs Chat service which you can reach through this Chat link.

I hope they can help you.  Please do keep us informed how you get on.

Re: Accidentally Deleted Computer from Backup

I contacted the Norton chat service immediately after it happened and they told me there was nothing they could do since I removed the computer from their server.  I googled such events and read that Norton should have some type of backup (which is what I thought in the first place) system in place for possibly 30 days.  So, I contacted chat again, got a different rep and they told me the same thing.  All my files and data are lost.  I googled the event again and came across these forums where some people seemed to be able to be helped getting their files back.

At this point, I have to try to piece together what I can from flash drives and start from scratch on other stuff like family history.

Re: Accidentally Deleted Computer from Backup

Hello mabenh.

What they seem to have said to you on the Chat links seems to be directly at odds with the information posted at the top of this forum by Norton staff member wwelty (if you click that link it should take you directly to his post).  The bit at the end where he says "The data is kept for 90 days as an extra safety measure to users who accidentally delete or remove a device" seems relevant in your case.

When you have read it you might like to go back to Chat and see what they say this time.  Whatever happens do keep us informed as it would be very interesting and troubling if they have changed this policy.

I do not know if this will help get your data back but you may well be helping others from future mistakes.

Good luck.

Re: Accidentally Deleted Computer from Backup

Hi - Yes, I saw that posting from wwelty and that was what made me go back to the chat help.  (I would have contacted him/her directly, but their ID hasn't been online since 10/13.)  The second person on chat told me the same as the first - that there was no way to retrieve the data.  I received a survey later that evening and gave very poor marks, explaining the issues.  I am waiting to see if there is a response/reaction from the survey readers.  It seems "chat" is more customer service than technical support, so I don't think I will be getting anywhere with them.

Thanks to everyone who is offering suggestions, advice and support.

Re: Accidentally Deleted Computer from Backup

Thanks for the feedback mabenh.

I will pursue this issue, but do not expect any speedy outcome that is likely to help you.  I am sorry that you have had such and experience but thank you for raising the issue so that we can try and get it sorted out for the future.

If anything new does emerge in the near future I will post here again or send you a PM (Inbox top right of screen).

Better luck for the future.

Re: Accidentally Deleted Computer from Backup

Hi Mike - Seems that an employee was able to get the data back to my account for me.  I've been in the process of downloading to the new computer and my extra laptop, so I have multiple backups at home and online.  I can say something good did come out of all this as I noticed that some things I thought I had backed up were not there, so I purposefully added those file extensions/names so they can be accessible in the future.

I guess being persistent pays off.  Thanks for your guidance, advice and support.  Melissa

Re: Accidentally Deleted Computer from Backup

Delighted that you managed to get your backup back Melisa with the help of prasad_shetty.

Sorry to hear that some things were not backed up, but you will not be the first to have not checked what they were actually backing up and your positive attitude will set you in good stead for the future.

All the best.

Mike
