Computer failed

I have two computers, they are 5 years old both, one laptop and one desktop. Both failed to boot, they go in to black screen asking for cd or dvd to boot. The only common in this two computers is that I installed on both Norton security 2015 less than a month.

Hi,
Have you checked in BIOS to see if your hard disk is listed in devices as well as is first or second in the boot order?
Make sure you have not inserted a USB storage device or optical disc into optical drive before booting to desktop.

Hi Galaxy45,

When you start the computer, press the F8 key repeatedly to see if you can get the Advanced startup options screen, from there you can try to start the computer in Safe mode or to choose other options that are available.

Re: Computer failed

Same problem for me.   Vista systems hang at boot up.   Have to F8, do a restore back a few days, use the Norton Removal tool and then reinstall Norton Security.   After all the updates, and everything shows good on Norton the next restart hangs on the boot up.   As soon as I uninstalled Norton, everything works fine.   The hanging spot seems to be when the hardware trys to switch to the run state and set the video.  Hard to find out for sure since it never finishes starting up and must do a hard shut off.   Cant seem to find a reason on the event logs either.   Hope there is a fix for this as i payed to use Norton Security and seems a shame that it does not like Vista.

Re: Computer failed

Was there some change in NS during past 2 weeks or so?

I have been using other security products for a while. Decided to re-install NS tonight. Was a total disaster on my Windows 8.1 64x PC. Had used NS previously with no issues.

The installation and updates appeared to work as normally as they had done before.

Start-up took forever and PC was very, very slow. Closing a window took forever.

When I looked at Action Center Security it showed a red border for both AV and Ant-Spyware saying two programs were running on each. It showed two instances of NS. On spyware one was off and one was on. One had the normal Norton yellow and black logo the other didn't.

On antivirus again there were two lines of NS, Both were "on". Again, only one had the normal yellow and black logo. Could not turn off the other,

Had always used the NS Uninstall tool in the past.

Tonight NS Uninstall tool failed - got hung up removing some storage device. Had to risk a hard shut down.

Was able to uninstall with Windows uninstaller and then ran NS Uninstaller ok. During the process NS took about 5 minutes to send an error report.

Now uninstalled and using another product and my PC is fine again.

What happened to NS? It's now appears to be unusable on my Windows 8.1 PC. Perhaps was a corrupted install. Don't know for sure.

Although I'm hesitant to do so, when I have a lot of free time to deal with another install and possible uninstall I'll try it again. I'd like to be able to use it.

Private message read yesterday. I work with Liliana Gaspard from symantec only.  Il have this tool since months. Your tool can't have log on a cold boot, it operate only on reboot.

So there is no bug on reboot, so your tool can not be use ! I am not the only person on the world that have tis bug. All vista user are concern. Use the pc of your lab and do you job.

Believe me but that is not the case as I've recounted from time to time about Norton 360 went it went from V2 to V3 and Windows Explorer and other file managers started crashing when you used the context menu.

Uninstall N36- and no problem; reinstall it and problem again ..... obviously it was Norton's fault ?

But eventually a user found that another file manager, PowerDesk, had issued an update to fix the problem triggered by their own software. Microsoft had told partners it was updating a part of Windows and that partners would have to modify one part of their software to comply with it. Symantec did just that but Microsoft did not immediately update themselves nor did PowerDesk and some other applications that users reported and everything was OK. But then Microsoft got around to doing their own update and that broke other updated software IF there was unupdated software present as well .... When PowerDesk (or any of the other unupdated software you might have installed) updated itself then everything worked fine for everyone and it clearly was not the fault of Norton although it seemed to be the trigger .....

Difficult to follow my account I'm sure but it really did happen in these Forums some years ago and the messages are still there to show it!

PowerDesk crashes when right-clicking on some files and folders after installing Norton 360

Believe me it was a frustrating experience for any of us using Norton 360 and PowerDesk back then ....

Of course not. That was not the point. PowerPoint fixed their application.

The point I was making was the danger of drawing conclusions from apparently clear evidence. I was showing a real example where removing Norton fixed the problem -- which you said showed

The uninstallation of norton resolve completly the bug, normal stratup. It the proof of norton responsibility.

but Norton was not faulty, was not the cause of the problem.

It may be but your example does not prove it.

What is the version ID of Norton Security (Support / About) are you using and what version of Windows please?

Hello i am computer analyst. Norton is faulty. Vista sp 2 up to date. Norton security 22.1.0.9 No bug with all previous versions !

Re: Computer failed

FWIW, if Program A and Program B are installed and one of them get updated and causes a conflict between the two, then the removal of either will permit the end of the conflict - as in end the problem.

I understand totally what Hugh is getting at, and since NS 22 is new, there may not be a "similar bug" (conflict) in the older versions.

Re: Computer failed

AFAIK: After the 1.0.9 patch, there has been new issues rising up. One such is related to TrueCrypt & Windows 8.x .
We need other users of Vista to prove this issue system wide to drive more attention. BTW, I hope the log gathering is going on in background.

Hello i am computer analyst. Norton is faulty.

Then you should understand that you do not have the evidence to prove that Norton is faulty ...

I have the evidence to prove what I wrote -- I and others here lived through it and I gave you the link to the happening here.

There may be an incompatibility between Norton Security and VISTA but again your "previous versions" does not prove it -- it was equally true for the incident with Norton 360 since the crashes only occurred after Norton 360 went from V2 to V3 (using the designations in effect back then).

Given Microsoft's history of issuing patches that break other functions I would be just as likely to look for something there -- they even issue patches to Windows that break their own products ......

Re: Computer failed

I have a Vista Laptop that is running NSBU and have not seen any problems with BSOD, nor asking for a CD/DVD.  Admittedly, it is NSBU and not NS.  I am curious if all having this situation Are using NS.

I know this is going to sound stupid, but please hear me out.

I'm wondering if it is possible that for some reason there is a problem with the installation of NS when it comes to the decision part of not installing the GEAR drivers since NS does not contain the BU.  Without going into the exact flow of how this applies (I'll leave that to Norton if they desire to comment or not), basically if you are installing NS instead of NSBU, the GEAR drivers are not installed.  This does not happen as part of the actual install as the drivers are actually installed when the first BU is made.  There can be other GEAR drivers on the system, but I will not say anything about them now.

I also remember there were many problems years ago concerning the removal of Norton products (usually using the NRT without first removing via Control Panel in order to stop the drivers) messing up the GEAR drivers, so that the CD/DVD drives would not work - thus stopping users from reinstalling via the disk they bought.

Now with all that said, I'd like to ask those experiencing this situation if they in fact did an over the top install from NIS?  Thinking perhaps something could have gone wrong with the removal of NIS as it does use a sort of NRT function (rips NIS out without stopping it first).

I'm saying this is the problem, but more or less brain storming out loud (on the forum) while sharing my thoughts.

BTW, if you can get into your system the GEAR Driver is located in my NSBU @  C:\Windows\System32\drivers\GearAspiWDM.sys

Who knows - I may be smoking something funny?

Hi jnq,

I highly doubt that CCleaner fixes the problem, one question if you uninstall NS and directly install again v.22.1.0.9 does it work for a while or the problem appears on first boot?

Also, do you overinstall from NIS 14 or directly install NS?

Merci d'avance,

Re: Computer failed

Hello CCleaner fixes the problem for reboot. Not for cold boot. If I directly install 22.1.0.9 the bug is present at the first boot.

If i install previous version of ns 22.0.1.110 no problem.

No i do not overinstall from nis 2004 , nrt is my friend.

Re: Computer failed

Hello CCleaner fixes the problem for reboot.

Does it give any useful information as to what it's fixed?

Is it the File Cleaner or the Registry Cleaner that fixes it -- for the first you can see details of the files being deleted by opening the specific line in the Analysis and the Registry Cleaner shows every action it proposes to take.

BTW I may run the first step Analysis of the Registry Cleaner from time to time just to see what it thinks needs dealing with. However I very rarely actually let it clean the Registry -- I've seen too many computers doorstopped through running Registry Cleaners including the one that is in N360 but I gather no longer in NS, thank goodness.

Hello i perform the two opreations.  Do you think that i remmember all the lines of the files analysis ? For the resgistry i have tge backup files.

Now NS is uninstall of the computer and replace by a free security solution for a month or two max.

Waiting for solution and a fix from symantec. All log from NS and system log have been send to symantec.

No -- but I'd expect that you might remember anything related to Norton or Windows that might relate to your problem since you say that CCleaner fixed it?  You are a computer analyst .... <s>

I guess that you had some kind of "extra" help for this...

As for the NRT, forget it, it's "all the rest" that has done the job, if the job is done.

Re: Computer failed

Failed again.   Tried to use the install downloaded from the Norton Account.   Computer still will not restart after Norton Security is installed (and all Live Updates are done).  Was asked to make logs of the process.. but since the computer never finishes rebooting.. there are no logs.  Wish they would fix this problem.   I dont want to spend the holiday weekend trying to get Norton Security working again, as I am pretty sure tech support for this will NOT be someone from inside the US.   Bummed that i payed for Norton Security and I still cannot use it.

Only way i can use my computer is to use a previous restore point and then run Norton removal tool.   Then my computer works just fine.   Please Norton... can we fix this please?

Re: Computer failed

I did the install again with the downloaded version from Norton Accounts and did updates.   Seems to be fixed now.   Reboots seem okay now.  Thank you Sunil!
