Live update does not report last update

a previous version of nis showed the last update as being either 1 day 14 hours 30 seconds agao or 40 seconds ago if just updated. This does not show in the latest version.

If I check and it just shows yesterday i presume i am still at the present time in the middle of an update but i have no idea how much longer it is going to take, so if i turn off my computer i have paid for download that needs to be done next time i turn on my computer.

I need a progress bar to show how far the update has progressed and an estimate of how long i need to leave my computer on to get the live update complete.

I suspect over a week I am paying for heaps of downlaod that is no use to me, manually doing live update is not an option for me.

Re: Live update does not report last update

My Norton product looks different > my v22.7 main window show Protection Updates: e.g., 09/22/2016
Norton main window will show either "Current" or "Date"
1) "Current" infers that user side is in sync with Norton side.  The date inferred by "Current" is the release date for current set.
2) "Date" infers that user side is pending sync with Norton side.  The date inferred by "Date" is the release date for prior set.
At any time protection is as up-to-date as possible with available data user side and Norton side.
Regardless of whether item is locally detected, Norton v22.7 initiates a lookup in the cloud, and merges the results.

Norton Security local definitions contain the signatures of the most prevalent threats. When not connected to the internet, your machine will still be protected from high risk threats. When connected to the internet, Norton Security scan engine will perform the scan using both local definitions and cloud definitions.  Norton will access the local definitions and a few other layers of protection to get the process going. If the scan engine detects something that requires further investigation, cloud definitions are accessed, providing a thorough cleaning of the items. The final scan results will be a combination of several layers of protection, incorporating both the Local and Cloud definitions.

Re: Live update does not report last update

Thanks for your reply, items 1 & 2 are exactly as I described, however the remainder makes no sense to me.

The bottom line is I do not know hat is happening with live update, when I turn on my computer is it downloading more updates until it is up to date & when it is up to date I do not know how long ago it updated. Again I need a progress bar to indicate downloads are or are not occurring & how much further the updates are going to take to complete.

please re-read the question

Re: Live update does not report last update

Okay, you need a progress bar.   Maybe, I'm not understanding your concern.  Sorry.
Please allow me to try again.
My dashboard (at this time) reports 09/23/2016 and Intelligent Updater reports 09/23/2016 (at this time).  09/23/2016 represents the release date for the prior set which was current at time of release.

From the release date for the prior set, Norton is building a new set and your Local defs are being updated with new defs.  Hence Local side is pending sync with Norton side.  At some point in the cycle.  Norton releases a new Intelligent Updater set and in relative close proximity to that time.  My Dashboard goes Current and the process / the cycle starts over again.

09/23/2016 was the current set when it was released and becomes the prior set as Norton builds onto 09/23/2016.   As Norton adds data to Norton side... so, does your Local side with Live Updates to Local with a small subset of definitions.

Norton side (not Local side) is where the bulk of protection data resides as v22.7 is Cloud based protection.
v21.x had pulse updates to feed and satisfy Local side where protection resided with v21.x.

Local updates with v21.x were much larger and much more frequent.   As Norton protection was Local based.
All that pushing of updated data to your machine with v21.x is now satisfied in the Cloud aka Norton side with v22.7.

A progress bar is not needed as progress and updates are ongoing and always as current as possible in the Cloud.  A progress bar would always indicate an ongoing process. Norton recommends an active Internet connection.

Hope that helps and if not, I'll hope others will chime in.

Re: Live update does not report last update

I have just been using my computer for the last hour (at this present time of writing) my dashboard also says 09/23/2016

In the last hour has norton downloaded anything to my pc for which I have paid download kb/mb?

I am about to turn off my computer, if there has been downloading I have paid for nothing as next time I turn on it will still say at that time 09/23/2016 and maybe start downloading for which I will pay again.

I dont know how to make this clearer but I want to know whether norton is downloading or not

Aha!, Yes......something is amiss re 09/23/2016.   Sorry, I was not aware your machine was not cycling between Current and Date...., stuck on 09/23/2016.

Please advise operating system and Norton product version.
Please advise any other real-time protection.
Please run Subscription Status and Get Support under Help on main dashboard to confirm you are connecting to Norton.
Please run Norton LiveUpdates several times until no updates found > re-start not under the influence of Fast Startup > repeat.  Post back....

Please review your LiveUpdate History.  I'm sure Norton has downloaded since 09/23/2016.  I have events logged in History for 09/24 and 09/25.

Re: Live update does not report last update

If you run LiveUpdate manually, you will see how long it takes to complete the download. The download should not take more than a minute, unless you are on a dialup connection. You should not be wasting any download time.

Instead of doing a shutdown, try doing a restart. If you use Win 8 or 10, the Fast Startup feature does not actually do a full shutdown, so any software updates that need a restart do not get completed.  See more information here.

Re: Live update does not report last update

Silly me thinking, x38class issue was that dashboard did not always show 'Current'.

Re: Live update does not report last update

my staus still reports as at 09/23/2016, history shows no entry for liveupdate on 23rd, I had a scan automatically yesterday.

I have had the situation many times where I have been on my computer for 45mins & then I get window saying I neeed to re-start to make updates effective, so an update has occured but I knew nothing was happening.

at least the status report I had with the earlier version was far better and should never have been changed unless there was a significant improvemnet in how live update is reported.

if i remember correctly my icon in the taskbar shows a red x if it is not up to date, so why can't this icon be overlayed with another icon to show downloading, similar to the star on the internet connection or the yellow triangle. QED!

Obviously similarly to microsoft, some tech guru thinks they know better than the users & changes things regardless, take ms control panel for instance, it takes me ages to find something that used to be simple.

The real question is how do you converse with norton to get some action!

Re: Live update does not report last update

It seems you would like Norton to pop out to let you know it is doing something in the background. Most here want less intrusions from Norton. They trust it is doing what it is supposed to.

Re: Live update does not report last update

Thanks to all for comments & suggestions.

As I expected norton live chat was no help at all, they even wanted to connect to m y computer to solve this issue, how ridiculous is that!

Eventually after some haggling I got a reference number for a investigation in to my issue, I still expect to get a vague reply but I will persue this to the end.

Norton online chat support... Our (Symantec's) online chat agents can solve most problems for you by making a direct connection to your system. You CAN use Norton live chat...

It's NOT ridiculous at all. Moreover, you can call or contact a Norton agent during business hours here.

Do you really belive by connecting to my computer the Norton rep is going to change my software and nobody else?

for some reason I tried to add in here the chat log but it will not fit for some reason so I have attached it as a text file

Re: Live update does not report last update

The support reps cannot change your software. They are not engineers. What they can do is look at different areas of your computer that may be causing whatever issue you may have. ie looking for other installed software that may be conflicting with Norton, or some system setting. It is a time saver for the user, instead of the agent asking you to check this or check that. What the agent can do in a few minutes, would take much longer with a question and answer chat session.

(Norton) Agents CAN help you with Remote Assistance

Agents CAN help, No they can't, you really have not read or follwed this thread.

We have read the thread. The comment you replied to says they can help with Remote Assistance. You did not allow the agent to connect. So you cannot really say they can't help when you did not give them a chance.

Re: Live update does not report last update

For BJM, thanks for your comment re update before shutdown, I am trying to teach my wife the intricasies of idiot software issues which I cannot explain to her why it is so. We both use restricted user for internet access & live update cannot be run unless admin.

For Peterweb, I knew before I posted this issue that norton reps could not fix this issue by logging on to my computer, so your comment about giving them a chance was never going to happen

As I have posted & logged an issue with Norton I will leave this issue open until Norton fix it FOR ALL USERS! by updating the software

Hmm, we both run as Admin user so, not aware LiveUpdate cannot be run as "restricted user".
Does Norton Automatic LiveUpdate run as "restricted user"..?

I do run as standard Windows user on all my PCs. No problem with LiveUpdate, automatic or manual, running on any of them.
