Data usage with latest firmware/app

Since the latest firmware and app update,  The second day after the update, I'm getting very odd results for connect time and data usage reported by the app. Despite being on for 4-5 hours yesterday playing WoW,  the app claims that my laptop was on the network yesterday only for 1h 56m and only used 25.43 MB.  Other devices likewise show much less data and time usage than I know they consumed and the total data reported by the app is significantly less than the data usage as reported by my ISP.

The first day after the update,  the app reported significant  usage "yesterday" for devices that have not been on the network for close to 3 weeks and which do not show up in the "Devices" page at all now after the firmware/app update.

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

@dgt01 Try these steps and restore your settings: Note- This is NOT a factory reset follow exactly as stated.

1. Unplug the Core and plug it back in.

2. Open your Core app and select set up (versus the login option).

3. Click next through all the setup steps. At one point there is a choice for existing Norton customer, choose this and enter your log-in credentials

4. Select Yes to restore existing settings

Please let us know if this helps with your issues.

Cheers

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

Resetting did not help.  That was a required step to just get it to work at all after the firmware and app update but the Data Usage and Time are still wildly wrong.

Last night,  shortly before midnight,  I checked the usage for "Today -> People" and the reported bandwidth consumption was for the 3 people I track: 4.63 GB, 594 MB, 508 MB and it showed a total of 5.71 GB and the "Today -> Devices" also showed a value of 5.71 GB.

Today,  looking at "Yesterday -> People",  I would have expected the numbers to go up if only slightly but instead I'm seeing: 15.45 MB, 420 KB, 0.94 MB with a total usage of 16.80 MB. On the "Yesterday -> Devices" tab,  it shows a total usage of 3.81 GB

So almost 30% of the total usage disappeared when it rolled from today to yesterday from the device side and almost 99% of the usage disappeared from people as it rolled from today to yesterday.

The "Previous 30 days" people usage did go up by the amount in "Yesterday People" (which is expected since I haven't had the device for 30 days yet)  so at least that is consistent.

And as a second level sanity check to make sure what showed yesterday as today didn't just stay in the today field,  today the People Today is reporting 89.24 MB, 258 MB, and 14.97 MB

A minor point,  the value shown under "Previous 7 days" is actually the sum of the prior 8 days.

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

Maybe a hint as to what's going on,  I just observed one of the devices on the network go from

Last Seen : Currently Online

to

Last Seen: 09/25/2017 @ 11:53AM

When it did that,  time time reported "Today" on the device dropped from "1h 14m" to "0h 0m"

And when the device moved from "Currently on Your Network" to "Previously on Your Network",  the "Network Detail" "IP Address" went from 172.15.3.2 to blank.  I believe this might confirm my earlier suspicion that the Core/app is trying to use the IP Address to track time and bandwidth usage rather than using the MAC Address.

And a request:  Would it be possible to add a tracker for month at a time with a specific day of the month reset so that it would be possible to sync data usage with the providers idea of monthly usage?

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

@dgt01  My firmware is v191 and Android app is v1.19. There is a visual under network in bandwidth consumption if you select devices which you can select up to the past 30 day and will display those values. You may already know this of course. If not its there for the viewing. In this build I still do not see a "reset" for any date. Cheers

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

That's the set of menu items I'd used to collect the above data :-)

I do note that even with v191 and v1.19, the "Previous 7 Days" is actually the sum of the 8 prior days.  For instance,  here are the 8 prior days usage for one of my devices ( by tracking "yesterday" 8 days in a row):

2.49GB, 2.09GB, 3.80GB, 2.64GB, 1.11GB, 950MB, 1.40GB, 1.23GB and the "Previous 7 Days" on the is reporting 15.69GB.

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

I actually oversee two cores, my own and one for my brother-in-law. I see the new firmware seems to have fixed the data usage issue on both of them. Things that hadn't been turned on for days still showed up as having used a lot of data for the current day, but today's list shows an appropriate amount of data, and things that are off or not near the core do not show up at all. This appears to be one improvement for 193. (Only today's list is correct so far, previous days still show the incorrect usage, but I assume as we go forward, more days will start to show correct usage.)

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

Thanks Confused11111 for that feedback. Just noticed the firmware had updated to 193 on my Core overnight as well. This update was scheduled to correct the issue with gaming lag as well. 193 update has taken care of a few other small issues, such as the automatic speed test had never completed from my initial setup over a week ago. That finally has completed and shows the current date//time stamp. My data usage across devices now shows values that make more sense than before as well. Hoping the value to "rest" data usage per device appears in the near future alongside the ease of removing a specific device vice having to wait for it to drop off the network. Now, if we can just get a Windows interface I would indeed be one very happy camper. Release notes for 193: https://community.norton.com/en/forums/norton-core-mobile-apps-update-%E2%80%93-release-notes

All said did this update cure your issues?

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

It cured the data reporting for me. There are others on this thread that may want to chime in too. I am still waiting to see if the Internet connection issue is fixed too. Since it was only every three days or so for me, I may not know for a while.

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

The new firmware does appear to have resolved the odd usage reporting.  At least other than "Previous 7 days" actually being the sum of eight prior days.

My speed test however is stiiiiiillllllll running.  I'll try a soft reset later to see if that will clear the constant running speedtest issue.

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

dgt01 Its been a few days so I am following up. One note: The Core Android app is now at v1.22. How are your app issues? Finally corrected? Please mark the thread as solved if things meet your satisfaction so others may see the solution.

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

The issues in this thread have not reappeared with firmware 193 and app 1.22.  I'm still seeing a discrepancy between Core and my ISP but there's a separate thread for that so I'll close this one.

Re: Data usage with latest firmware/app

I think the discrepancy that you are seeing is based on the default scanning properties of the CORE. If your CORE is set to the default security, it only scans data coming from websites that are not listed as HIGHLY TRUSTED by the NORTON security network. So for example, I am assuming that all NORTON/SYMANTEC websites fit into the HIGHLY TRUSTED category, and therefore the CORE does not scan that data as it comes into your network, so that data is not counted in the CORE app that is displaying scanned data. If you go to another website that is not HIGHLY TRUSTED by NORTON, then the CORE is going to scan it to ensure that it is safe, at which point the data counter on the app is going to increase by that amount of data.

However, your ISP doesn't care where the data is from, it is going to count every bit of information that passes through to your network from the internet.

Just my thoughts...
