Just got a Norton Core

Hi guys got me self a Norton Core for early Christmas, which will be the only present I'll be getting (I'm in my 40s cheeky)

Just asking, does anyone know what the toggle:

Allow or Block devices attempting to join the network (wired or wireless)

means? Which is which? and is this a MAC address block?

Re: Just got a Norton Core

Unless I am mistaken, enabling that setting will require that any device attempting to join either the wireless or ethernet network will cause the app to prompt you for an approval before it is allowed to join.  I believe the default is "Off."

Re: Just got a Norton Core

You know I think the same... but it's a little vague isn't it... I hope the guys at Norton will tell me exactly what it does... I'm testing it to be sure right now...

Re: Just got a Norton Core

Well... I AM able to get an unregistered device online ... with (I'm assuming) the block setting ON or Green or the toggled to the right... again... I'm not exactly sure what it does... a MAC address blocker or something would be what I was assuming it is... or am I wrong?

Re: Just got a Norton Core

According to the User Guide discussion of the Guest Network:

If you want Norton Core to notify you each time a user joins your guest network, enable Allow or block devices attempting to join the guest network.

I must assume the same is true for the option under the general "Wireless" settings.

Re: Just got a Norton Core

All: Under wireless settings the button green signals the app will notify you when each device joins your main network. Greyed out and to the left will NOT notify you. The guest network is a similar setting but independent of the main wireless network settings.

Re: Just got a Norton Core

I think this setting to let you know when somebody joins your network.  Someone could in theory obtain the credentials to your network and connect to it and you would not know.  This would notify you and then it would give to the opportunity to block them  before they can potentially cause harm.  Like you said previously with the setting on it still allowed connections, it doesn't block the connection until you block them after getting the notification.  It just the way I think this option works.

Thanks SendOfJive, SoulAsylum, MannyT

That solves the mystery! It's a notification switch...

I wish they'd make a simple "BLOCK NEW DEVICES" option, unless I switch it off or register everything first and then set it "OFF" so none of my neighbors could piggyback on my network. Or maybe for "temp" devices make them use a slower "GUEST" network.

I've been setting up a MAC address block for years on my routers, since I live in a condo with multiple WIFI signals all around.

Re: Just got a Norton Core

Just change the default WPA2 password to something long and random.  That will keep your neighbors off your network.  You can set up a Guest Network in Norton Core if you need one.

Re: Just got a Norton Core

Dear SendOfJive

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, it's already (and has been) more than 20 characters long, for years. I'm happy that the Norton Core router allows for more random characters (such as *'s and +-='s and other stuff).

However, I do unfortunately have a nosy kid living next door, and I've detected (probably) him trying to get onto my wifi in the past. I'd just rather have a MAC block or some sort of "allow only the devices I know of" by default.

Probably a mistake or prank but I'm not letting my guard down with this kid. It's partly why I bought this thing in the first place

Re: Just got a Norton Core

Hello TheSamurai

I just got a new printer. I was expecting it to enter my network and also my wireless network, so I turned that 2nd toggle to ON. I received 2 notifications. You can see them by tapping on the little bell on the upper right side on a bell. One notice told me I had joined the wireless group that we use and the 2nd notification was that my printer was allowed into my main network aka my home network. That is what happens when that switch is on. After seeing what happens with it on, I now can see that it should be kept on OFF unless you are installing something that will be using the net or adding something to your network. I also received a message on the front of my Android cellphone telling me that device had entered my network.. After I read it, I swiped it away. In the same way if something had tried to get in, I assume I would have received a noticeable message saying something had tried to get in.

I hope my personal experience has helped you TheSamurai  in understanding what that 2nd switch is for.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.
