Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

Norton seems conflicted.  Sites approved (green circle with check) by Norton Safeweb in my browser search get blocked by Norton Core as being potentially malicious, etc...  Should there be more levels of protection to choose in Norton Core?

Re: Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

Hello

I had something similar happen today. Our son came to visit, so his Android Samsung 8 came into our network which is ok and has happened before. This time though, my Core showed a site from his cellphone produced 2 blocks from his cellphone. He wasn't using his cellphone at the time, but it was turned on  and hanging from his belt inside of his case His cellphone is normally covered as part of his Mobil Security and is part of his Norton Security. His cellphone didn't get any notice of any malware or his visiting any malicious sites.. If it was blocked by my Core, shouldn't  there be some indication on his cellphone  that a site was blocked? It added 2 blocks to my total.

Have a Nice Day and

Thanks.

Emace Change your DNS settings on the Core. Here is how: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/uk/home/current/solutions/v118380590_core_en_us

Re: Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have done that in the past to address the dropped wifi issue, but it hasn't really helped either problem.  Regardless, shouldn't two different Norton products be able to agree whether a site is a threat?

Emace have you also looked at your PDI Deep packet inspection settings?

I did check the inspection settings ... has always been set to the default.  Thanks again for the suggestion.

Hi @EMace,

Thanks for posting about this. Could you please tell us what your mobile app and firmware versions are? Thanks.

Emace, I have my Core DPI set to "normal" and Norton Core DNS. The site opens fine on my end.

Re: Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

Try going to the support page on the Sengled site.  That is where I hit the snag.  I am interested to find out whether you get the same issue I did.  Also, it is just one example.  There have been several others.  Try viewing the cell phone solar chargers on www.selfrely.com.  I got blocked by the Norton Core on that site as well.

Gayathri, my app is version 1.24 and I am running firmware 213.

Re: Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

EMace I got the following when attempting to open the support link on that site. Its related to TLS as I am on Windows 10 using IE 11. All other areas of the site work as advertised. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2851628/internet-explorer-cannot-display-an-https-site-when-ssl-2-0-and-tls-1

Please note: Core IS giving me the issue as well as the browser and how the website is interpreting the security handshake when the browser tries to access that page. By default in IE TLS 1.1 / 1.2 are enabled and SSL2 is disabled under the local security policy thus not an available option to enable it. See Core screenshot.

Re: Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

That is interesting.  I tried a different browser (Firefox) and received the message included below.  That said, I still get notified in the Core app that the site was blocked.  So why the notice in the Core if it is being handled at the browser?  Check your activity feed in the Alerts of the Core app to verify you do not have a similar item.  Thanks for continuing to work through this with me.

The last screenshot was from my app activity list. Same blockage as you are getting.

Re: Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

SoulAsylum, I learned today that Norton Core does not use the same inspection algorithm as SafeWeb/SafeSearch.  Norton Core uses Blue Coat.  I believe Symantec acquired Blue Coat last year, so now they would need to make it generate a return. That said, I also learned that we can submit blocked sites to sitereview.bluecoat.com to have them reviewed if we find the block unusual.  I am going to submit every site blocked by the Core, but given the ok by SafeWeb/SafeSearch just to hear what they have to say.

Re: Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

Emace Thanks for that info, I was not aware of the review site and will pass this along to Norton for authentication before suggesting it as a blocked site review for Core.

Re: Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

SoulAsylum, I look forward to hearing what you learn.  For what it's worth, my information came from Norton Core tech support.  By the way, it makes me nervous that they would do anything on my, "recommendation," but here is what Blue Coat replied about Sengled:

Submitted URL:  support.sengled.com/

Suggested category:  Shopping

Your comments:  please provide information as to why the www.sengled.com site is approved, but the support portion of the site is blocked .... thanks

Re: Why does Norton Core block sites approved by Norton Safeweb?

It's an exceptionally bad situation to have conflicting responses from SafeWeb/SafeSearch and Norton Core (AKA Blue Coat), particularly for the majority of Norton customers who don't frequent this Forum - those who expect Norton products to "just work".

Can anyone reach back into Norton and see if they're going to merge the 2 products/solutions soon (or, at least, have them using the same database)?

All: Nothing to report other than the team has been made aware of the issue. Issues between safeweb and bluecoat will be resolved hopefully sooner than later.
