How to change Xbox NAT type from mod to open

After installing Norton Core, my son's xbox NAT type went from open to strict. I enabled UPnP on the Core app and changed DNS from Norton to gateway which changed it to moderate but he still can't host or join friends. I am hoping someone can assist us to change NAT type to open ?. we did try the google holding controller buttons plus A step but this did not work

Re: How to change Xbox NAT type from mod to open

hi SoulAsylum. thank you for this link. I have not yet read thru but did spend yesterday on the phone with both Norton and Microsoft support. MS have supplied me with specific port numbers to enter into the router admin setting page of norton core app which requires 3 field inputs (1. name, 2. internal port, 3. external port) but couldn't tell me whether their port number would be internal or external port value and advised me to call norton back. i did this expecting norton to be able to answer this and advise what was required in each field but they surprisingly couldn't answer this. rgds. Re: How to change Xbox NAT type from mod to open

hi SoulAsylum. my apologies for delay again - i am a working father who is fairly time poor and hence not being able to follow up on this daily but am wanting to resolve for my son. I tried to open the link "this article" from your 2nd reply bit it is not opening it - i am new to using this forum - is there something i need to do additionally to have the link open ?. our company IT guru suggested that i put the same port number given by Microsoft into both the internal and external fields and said he didnt think the value put into the name field had any functional impact and suggested to just put the device name but i tried this (setting the protocol to UDP for multiplayer) and it still didnt change the NAT type to open. thank you for your efforts to help further. rgds, David

Re: How to change Xbox NAT type from mod to open

Dave, just a left mouse click should open the link in a new browser tab. In IE I right mouse click, telling to open in a new tab so as not to lose the page I am visiting here on the forums.

In your Core app setup the following ports as they are required:

These ports must be open for Xbox Live to work:

  • Port 88 (UDP)
  • Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
  • Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
  • Port 80 (TCP)
  • Port 500 (UDP)
  • Port 3544 (UDP)
  • Port 4500 (UDP)

Looking at the website over at X-Box Live some services appear to be having issues. I would set the ports about and just name the device X-Box as it doesn't matter what the name is. Also in your Norton product set "silent mode" for 1 hour and attempt to connect the xbox.

Cheers

Re: How to change Xbox NAT type from mod to open

hi SoulAsylum. tks. i have been viewing all blog activity on my phone so realise by your reply re right click that i should be on my laptop. That aside, i followed steps as suggested, which were same as our IT guy, but i did the extra step you mentioned re silent mode, but still no luck. Just to ask you to check, i am attaching 3 pics here. Pic no 1 shows my adding and saving data on port forward screen for xbox. Pic 2 shows it showing saved in port forward setting screen Pic 3 is what i see if i go into the UPnP screen and click on this device ( i dont know whether there being no info on this screen means i have not got it set up properly or not). rgds. Dave whoops. wont let me browse to picture attachment in gallery on phone ?

One last observation. I notice that on the network settings -> address reservation screen item it shows an IP adress is now set for my sons xbox as well - I am assuming this is correct and happens when the port assignment was made. the number is a 172.XX.XX.XXX format

Re: How to change Xbox NAT type from mod to open

Hi SoulAsylum,

Just to let you know that whilst I am still keen to find out the solution to this issue using the Core settings, I decided, in the interests of ensuring my son could use his Xbox as before, for this weekend, to go outside the core, as opposed to outside the box :-)  , and so I renamed the Core and re-connected all other devices to it then assigned my son's Xbox wi-fi connection back to the Gateway router and it had the desired impact of re-opening the NAT setting to Open.

As I say, I am still interested in finding the answer to the original problem so that once I have this I can reconnect the Xbox to the Core with whatever setting enables the NAT type to open via the Core.

Appreciate all your help to date with this query.

Re: How to change Xbox NAT type from mod to open

Set EACH of those ports singularly, to UDP/TCP. ALL the ports have to be added from the list.

Re: How to change Xbox NAT type from mod to open

Hi SoulAsylum

Thanks for checking in. I have not worried to change from my implemented plan B, being to switch the Xbox back to the original gateway router that enables the open NAT type.

I did however look to see if I could action your advice being to "Set EACH of those ports singularly" on the Core port forwarding settings page but to be honest it didn't allow me to do this. When I go onto the settings page - you can only save after keying in values for all three fields, it didn't let me key one value then save then do the next etc etc..

I am happy having things as they are now with letting the Xbox route through the original gateway.
