Norton Security did not start on boot

I have win 7 64 bit and Norton Security Version:22.17.2.47. Today it did not start on boot. It normally does start. I looked in MSCONFIG and it is set to run as as a service on start i.e under the services tab. Is that correct? I do not see it under start up tab only the Norton Download Manager which is unticked. It is not in all programs/start up. Should it be?

Try restarting your computer again to see if Norton comes up. The current version of Norton is 22.17.3.50. It could be that your system is half way through the update process.

Norton runs as a service, so no, it would not be in all programs/startup.

@peterweb Yes it did start on boot this time . You may be right re update, I now have  version 22.17.3.50.

A couple of times over the past few weeks, I've experienced the same problem on both of my Win7 x64 PCs.  It happened again this morning.  I manually started Norton on both machines and checked the version - both are 22.17.3.50.

I have not yet tried powering off/on either machine to see if Norton is now going to start on boot, but I just wanted to report that @oakie is not the only user to experience this problem.

Just be sure you have the logging app running or it will not pick up and log the issue.

@peterweb - I'm confused. How can I have the logging app running when the problem happens at boot time?  I have to boot the PC and then look to see if Norton is running or not, then start the logging app if I see that Norton hasn't started.

The instructions that @sunil_GA gave me in the PM stated: "We need logs captures when Norton is not running/started on system start."

BTW - Norton started normally this morning on both machines when I booted them.

The logging program will survive a system restart, and will log the startup process. If it is not running, and Norton has an issue starting on bootup, it is too late to start the logging if the failed startup has already happened, and nothing will get logged.

@peterweb - okay, I got the logging tool started (see attached screen shot). I just minimized the window to the task bar.

@peterweb - Just so I would know how this logging tool works, I powered off then back on my laptop.  The logging tool restarted as you said it would.  The only problem was that it displayed a "Failed to enable reboot" error message.  I clicked on the "Retry" button but the same error reappeared. I ended up clicking on the "Continue Anyway" button and the laptop is now back up with the logging tool running.

Is that error message normal or a problem?

@Sunil_GA @peterweb - Apparently the error message that I got yesterday morning and posted about above, is a problem.  When I booted the laptop this morning, the logging tool did not automatically restart.  Norton Deluxe did start normally, but if it hadn't, I would have missed capturing the event in the logging tool.
