Norton Internet Security -- Disk Access stays at 100%
Problem: Norton Internet Security is causing the Disk Activity to stay at or near 100%.
Background: The system is relatively idle with no active programs or internet activiey. Norton Internet Security is up-to-date on patches, etc. I've even de-fragmented the hard drive. The only real application running on the computer is Norton. Going into Task Manager --> Performance (tab) --> Resource Monitor --> Disk (tab), the NortonSecurity.exe program is reading and writing to C:\ProgramData\Norton files. On a second computer that is working properly, the "Total (B/sec)" without any scans being performed is less than 500,000. On the computer that is experiencing severe performance problems, the "Total (B/sec)" value is 1,200,000 to 4,xxx,xxx. The disk activity pegs and causes the excess to start paging and the system is nearly non-responsive. Even when I temporarily disable the Scan Engine, the disk activity lowers temporarily (15 - 30 seconds) and then pegs back at 100%
Question: I have seen a few other threads that eventually led to a remove and re-install of Norton product. Cleaning up the ProgramData\Norton files should be something that can be done without a re-installation. Is there a way to provide a patch and update to Norton Internet Security to do a self-heal of file based performance issues caused by normal updates of the product over time?
