Jan. 2020 Patch Tuesday

Everyone!! Today, ALL Windows users should make it their TOP PRIORITY to ensure they get the patch Tuesday updates. The NSA has most likely used and has reported a VERY SERIOUS exploit in Windows which for some time, Microsoft hasn't even boned up to acknowledging nor patching. Well today, Microsoft IS patching it. Even the NSA is crying foul because of the seriousness of the exploit.  Its not entirely coincidence that Windows 7 will also get the patch on the very day Microsoft is retiring it for the everyday user. Patch up folks. Don't allow systems to stay unprotected, especially not at the expense of Microsoft saying "we have not seen any active exploits for this in the wild".

Cheers

Well the updates are hitting the street. Here is a listing of the exploit patches as listed in the MS Catalog.

Re: Jan. 2020 Patch Tuesday

I don't see a patch for Win7  Is that OS at risk?  Is this something that Norton cannot catch?

Re: Jan. 2020 Patch Tuesday

Shadoza. There were 2 updates specifically for Windows 7 . Monthly Roll-up: KB4534310  and Security Only: KB4534314  . These vulnerabilities aren't something "Norton cannot catch" but are exploits in Windows itself.

Edited: There are also "OTHER UPDATES" listed in this Ghacks article as well.

Re: Jan. 2020 Patch Tuesday

So, you are saying that Norton CAN catch this exploit?

Re: Jan. 2020 Patch Tuesday

As patched by Microsoft, Norton should see an attempt to modify core files on the system as it always does. The main exploit will attempt to make fake files appear as genuine thus the crux of the exploit. I'm assuredly confident Norton is aware of the issue and has provided sufficient updates via live updates silently, to mitigate the exploit.

Re: Jan. 2020 Patch Tuesday

I do hope this is truth as the security updates refuse to install on my OS7 system.

Re: Jan. 2020 Patch Tuesday

Are you using Windows Update to get the security updates or the links provided? There are some prerequisites as outlined in the "How to get this update" area of the articles. If you have just done a clean install of the OS you will have to ensure you have service pack 1 installed and the prerequisites before the Jan. updates will be offered or can be manually installed.

Re: Jan. 2020 Patch Tuesday

Um, so Windows 7 end of support is only for Windows 7 .... not Windows 7 SP1 ?

Or, January is last Windows 7 SP1 updates?

Re: Jan. 2020 Patch Tuesday

Windows 7 EOS as it is discussed here for home users. ALL versions of Windows 7. There will be NO MORE free updates or patches for home users on Window 7 period.  From this article

All Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008/R2 customers will get an update on January 14, 2020 as the operating system is in support until then. Updates for these operating systems after January 14, 2020 will be for ESU customers only.

Paid customers aka enterprise and businesses fall into this category. Paid subscriptions begin Jan. 14, 2020 and end Jan. 10, 2023.
