Defender now protecting PC instead of Norton Security

I use Norton Security Premium (10 devices) on all my PC’s and no problems until yesterday. Problems after windows 10 updates led me to having to use the Microsoft media creation tool on one of my PC’s to re-install Windows 10 21H2 again. All windows problems fixed but I just noticed that Defender is now protecting that pc even though Norton Security still exists. I have run live updates but seem unable to turn Norton on in Security settings of windows and change from Defender!

I believe that when Norton is installed it auto disables Defender so, presumably, I will have to uninstall Norton Security and reinstall it to get Norton Security protecting my pc again.

I want to continue using Norton Security and do not want to end up with Norton 360 and would appreciate advice on how to safely achieve this and fix the Defender issue.

Did you do a clean install of Windows, or an update/repair install from the media? If an update/repair, you will have to reinstall your Norton product because registry settings for Norton will no longer be there after a reinstall.

As you want to keep the older Norton Security you will need to log into your Norton Account and click on the user icon at the top right and then click on Manage My Subscriptions. Find your Norton Security subscription and click on the download link there.

Re: Defender now protecting PC instead of Norton Security

Thanks for swift reply Peter. I did an update/repair install from the media with existing  personal files and apps being kept. After the update/repair everything looked same and Norton Security still there and “working” and windows issues fixed - I can open Norton Security and run live updates etc. but Defender is now protecting my pc.

So no need to uninstall existing Norton Security on my pc first then. Just download again via version that is on my pc by clicking on user icon at top right and using Manage My Subscriptions? Presumably downloading and “installing” again on the same pc will not use up one of my spare subscriptions on Norton Security Premium and I will effectively just be reinstalling it? Apologies for all the extra questions.

Re: Defender now protecting PC instead of Norton Security

No need to apologise for a question. We all have to learn somehow.

When you reinstall on the same physical computer it does not use up another activation. And as long as you still see Norton Security  Premium in the list of your current subscriptions, that would download and install the same product. You do not need to uninstall your current product, as the install process will take care of that if necessary.

Re: Defender now protecting PC instead of Norton Security

Peter, many thanks for your patience. I could not find a Manage My Subscriptions option anywhere but after downloading and installing again the Defender issue has been duly fixed - Norton now On, Defender now Off when I check in Windows. Glad that the process was so easy and did not involve uninstall and that I have remained on Norton Security Premium with the same number of spare licences, as you confirmed.

Just in case others have the same issue, the detailed steps that I followed were:

1)Signed into Norton on pc with the Defender issue 2) Went to my.Norton.com and signed in. There were various dashboard options (no Manage My Subscriptions though): Download (top left), Your Protection Report, Device Security, Cloud Backup, Password Manager, Identity Advisor Plus, Anti Track, Parental Controls.

3) I clicked on download button (top left) and on next screen under the Install protection on this PC or Mac I clicked the Agree and Download box. 4) Norton Security downloaded successfully to the pc and I then ran the .exe to install it again.

5) Under Device Security on My Norton I clicked on View Devices to check that non of my spare licences had been used. All ok so signed out of My Norton and signed out of Norton on the PC. 6) Ran Live Updates 7) Went to Windows, Update & Security to check that Norton was now providing the protection and Turned On, with Defender shown as Turned Off.

Thanks again for you guidance Peter.

Re: Defender now protecting PC instead of Norton Security

You are welcome. Glad you got things sorted.

For future reference, the Manage my Subscriptions is in your Norton account at my.norton.com. At the top right of the page you will see a user icon. Clicking on that will show a drop down with Manage my Subscriptions as one option.

Re: Defender now protecting PC instead of Norton Security

Really don’t know how I missed finding that! Going your route is definitely best way to go as, for me, it brought up my Norton Security Premium details that had a download link and would have been the better route for me to take. I only have one subscription and hence the method I used worked for me.
I have marked your earlier post as the solution as, had I found the Manage My Subscriptions drop down, that is the process I would have followed.

Many thanks Peter

Re: Defender now protecting PC instead of Norton Security

For about a month I couldn't figure out why Norton wasn't running.  I installed it, but when I restarted the computer it was gone.  Here I found out what I was doing wrong.  I had to update it with live update till I see the message no updates available.  Then I can restart the computer and Norton will be running. I am on Windows 11.

That was one problem I am glad I took care of.  I would have hated to switch to Mcafee (had them once last year for about two months with yahoo).  My brother made me cancel and get Norton back.  He swears by Norton.  He doesn't like free protection.  He only uses and wants Norton.

Yahoo Norton doesn't have the vpn, but that's fine by my brother and I.

You may need to run LiveUpdate and reboot a few times before your product is completely updated to the latest version.
