REMOVE CRYPTO ?!?

I have been searching on google on how to remove this CRYPTO MINER and all articles point to removing NCrypt.exe but that exe does not exist in the Engine folder, question is did Norton change the name to something else to prevent users removing this CRYPTO nonsense?

They have now added a START CRYPTO option right under the OPEN NORTON menu option which you could accidentally click!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been using Norton since 1999 and unless I can find a solution to this intrusion and security vulnerability on my System I will need to look elsewhere for my anti virus software...

Any help would be appreciated thanks

Hello all, just getting around to this post. I see 4 things that are being discussed, and will respond to each, however the OP is asking about the tray item first. And it does appear we have an issue with showing the tray item when Norton Crypto is not enabled. This as someone points out is cosmetic and would still require and opt in before any Norton Crypto mining.

1) tray shows "start crypto miner" (will be resolved in our next update)
2) opt in banner, this will show any time a GPU has the ability to mine, this is a setting however to remove the banner, go to "settings (gear at the bottom of the main dashboard)" and select Norton Crypto, in there select "Hide Crypto on the My Norton dashboard"
3) NCrypt.exe (the actual miner) is only installed when you OPT IN to the feature, it will not be present unless that action is take by the user
4) GPU check will happen at each boot, its responsiblity is checking your current GPU against a list of valid GPUs for mining, it's only use is to show the Norton Crypto banner or not

If you're seeing Norton Crypto banner in your My Norton window. 
If your device meets system requirements and you're not finding NCrypt.exe. 
Maybe, you've not accepted the terms of mining and started it, as it is an opt-in feature.  Maybe, you've not turned Norton Crypto on.  Norton Crypto is opted-out by default.   Norton Crypto is an opt-in feature.

you can remove the NCrypt.exe file from your computer here are the steps:

1) go to N360 dashboard and open device security 
2) next click on "settings"
3) next disable "Norton Tamper Protection" (this will ask for a time frame, select 15 min)
4) navigate to /Program Files/Norton Security/engine/(product version)

There you will find NCrypt.exe and you can delete. Norton Tamper Protection will turn back on in 15 min or you can do it manually.

To be perfectly clear, this is off by default and will only be run when enabled by a user

I want the whole crypto malware nonsense feature removed, it is not a case of not turning it on for the first time I WANT IT GONE. Do you realise the potential it brings to damaging peoples Computers when a clever coder finds a way of activating peoples crypto via Norton into hyperdrive, did norton CEO's think about that before thinking of new ways to line their pockets!!!!

Hello risey. Unfortunately, Crypto cannot be removed without totally removing the Norton installation. You CAN, as I have done, temp disable Norton tamper protection, find the file shown below "NCrypt.exe" in your system file directory. Rename it to something other than its present name and save it. Reboot the device. I've actually deleted the file and it hasn't returned. This will keep Crypto from even checking the device for mining capability and not allow Crypto to run. The only con is the next NGC ( major version update ) may rename the file to its original name, or download it again, thereby reenabling it.

You probably do not have NCrypt.exe because you did not agree to Norton Crypto terms. 

You probably see the Norton Crypto banner because your device satisfies Norton Crypto system requirements

I don't have the Norton Crypto banner nor NCrypt.exe. 
My device does not satisfy Norton Crypto system requirements. 

Did you recently install Norton or upgrade your machine/get a new machine.

All:: The screenshot I posted had the file in the Norton, engine directory as a CLEAN INSTALL on my Windows 11 machine. It DOES NOT have a compatible GPU and there wasn't ever an "opt-in" agreement or authorized check by me. It was present right from the start and shown in Norton history as having checked for a compatible GPU for mining. I believe riding your computer of Crypt was the original intent of your posting. Deleting NCrypt.exe fixed the issue for me. Conversely. Norton may have changed the way Crypto is used/inserted within the Norton Suite since I installed. Never the less the GPU checks have not repeated themselves nor presented any opt-in request to check the GPU again. The file NCrypt.exe has NOT reappeared. For the OP, no one is clueless about Crypto sir, we wouldn't be assisting others with what those of us have found works if we were. Realistically, the only way to fully rid your system of Crypto ever appearing, guaranteed, is not using Norton software. I stated that in my first post also.

I imagine your machine supports Norton Crypto. You'll see Norton Crypto banner because your device supports Norton Crypto.

Are you reporting "Start Crypto Miner" with tray menu is new?  
I thought tray menu Crypto item was with machines that supported Norton Crypto. 
I thought if you had the Norton Crypto banner...you had tray menu Crypto item. 
Caveat: I've not experienced Norton Crypto my side.

Could someone please clarify something for me?  The 03-Feb-2022 release notes at Norton Security 22.22.1.58 for Windows is Now Available! state that "Customers who opt-in to using Norton Crypto will have the feature installed on their systems (See announcement)".  My understanding was that if you installed Norton prior to Feb 2022 that you have to perform a clean reinstall of Norton (i.e., remove Norton by running the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool in advanced "Remove Only" mode as instructed at Download and Run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool for Windows), and after you reinstall Norton there should be no traces of Norton Crypto on your computer as long as you opt out of the Norton Crypto installation.

Assuming you meet the minimum system requirements for Norton Crypto listed the support article Learn More About Norton Crypto, if you follow that clean reinstall method (i.e., running the NRnR Tool and choosing Advanced Options | Remove Only, and declining the installation of Norton Crypto during the reinstall) what traces of Norton Crypto do you see still on your computer?  Is there just that stray NCrypt.exe file at C:\Program Files\Norton Security\Engine\{product version from last Norton reinstall}\NCrypt.exe that can be deleted while Norton Product Tamper Protection is temporarily disabled, or do you see other traces of Norton Crypto?  For example, would you still be able reach the Norton Crypto dashboard and banner from the My Norton window of the Norton user interface as described in Learn More About Norton Crypto ?

Did Norton get bought out by the Lemmings or something? I mean.... come on, this Crypto Poop should be a separate application, it is a massive security threat, no doubt some clever hackers and coders down the line will figure out a way to trigger peoples crypto norton poop to turn on and overheat systems, mark my words it will happen....

The Norton Product Tamper protection feature protects all Norton files and processes from outside intervention. Even Windows processes cannot access Norton files and are reported in the Norton History.

Norton Crypto is separate.  Until you agree to Norton Crypto terms.  You do not have Norton Crypto. You only have the cosmetic trappings (banner/tray item).  NCrypt.exe is not there.  You've observed firsthand that NCrypt.exe is not on your supported machine.  

Before February 2022.  All Norton installs had NCrypt.exe.  After February 2022.  No Norton installs have NCrypt.exe.   NCrypt.exe used to be with all Norton installs.  Now, NCrypt.exe comes with accepting Norton Crypto terms.

My machines do not support Norton Crypto.  My machines had NCrypt.exe before February 2022.  My machines do not have NCrypt.exe after February 2022.  

Your machine does not have NCrypt.exe [here]. As to why you're only just now seeing Norton Crypto trappings.  I can only presume Norton added your GPU.  IDK

If you do not want to use the feature that is up to you. Norton crypto is not a separate install. It’s an opt in feature that you have to enable and is NOT on by default.

2) while I can't say precisely how much ETH we have mined as a pool, we have certainly given our pool users the proper share
3) the Norton Crypto miner will not run without your authorization

They said the right-click context menu is not supposed to show start crypto when crypto is disabled.  They also told me that if you accidentally click it, it won't start mining until you accept the agreement.  This link will show you if it's enabled or not:

My computer supports it but I don't want to use it either - if your machine does not support it then it won't work at all.  I also do not see ncrypt.exe so it must download if you accept the agreement.  Initially I saw the same thing that bjm and SoulAsylum saw was the ncrypt.exe was present on the system and you had to disable tamper protection to delete it.  They removed ncrypt.exe but now have added the context menu.  You can disable the banner (see bjm's instructions above).  Hopefully they follow through and remove the context menu item if it's disabled.  Maybe a moderator can confirm what the tech told me - Norton chat support tends to vary depending on which tech responds.

My computer supports it but I don't want to use it either - if your machine does not support it then it won't work at all.  I also do not see ncrypt.exe so it must download if you accept the agreement.  Initially I saw the same thing that bjm and SoulAsylum saw was the ncrypt.exe was present on the system and you had to disable tamper protection to delete it.  They removed ncrypt.exe but now have added the context menu.  You can disable the banner (see bjm's instructions above).  Hopefully they follow through and remove the context menu item if it's disabled.  

Do you have the My Norton - Norton Crypto banner? 
Do supported machine show the banner? 
Does disabling the banner - hide the banner?
Does disabling the banner - hide the Start Crypto Miner tray menu item?

Sorry meant hide banner.  Currently the bug is that the context menu shows start crypto with the feature disabled.  Hide banner I believe is a separate item from the context menu but not 100% sure.  I believe it's supposed to be hidden on the context menu until crypto is enabled.

So, that is the "bug".
Start Crypto Miner displayed with tray menu - with Norton Crypto not enabled.

It's new to me also, I spoke to several techs before someone told me this -maybe a moderator can confirm but they probably won't give any time frame.

That's correct - the banner will only show if your machine is capable of mining.

Being in concert with the original poster, Crypto/Norton STILL runs a GPU check every startup on my Windows 11 laptop. THIS, is what we are concerned about. If we want to crypto mine its our choice to download. Not have to worry about "accidentally" clicking on some menu item only to have the feature install itself. As has been stated, Norton CAN lower their requirements for a valid GPU, doing so without any notice prior, we could then have a valid GPU and see all the trash to enable it appear. As with much of the other "features" that pester users into having a headache meltdown, Crypto more likely than not will do the same. 

Per my screenshot taken a few minutes ago, Norton STILL performs a GPU check at EVERY BOOT TIME.

At this point the only way to get rid of Norton Crypto is to get rid of Norton. Maybe they’ll be less greedy and make a better product but i doubt it. I too am annoyed this feature exists in a security product and am more annoyed they’re forcing us to have this and wasting cpu resources checking every startup.

Hello all, just getting around to this post. I see 4 things that are being discussed, and will respond to each, however the OP is asking about the tray item first. And it does appear we have an issue with showing the tray item when Norton Crypto is not enabled. This as someone points out is cosmetic and would still require and opt in before any Norton Crypto mining.

1) tray shows "start crypto miner" (will be resolved in our next update)
2) opt in banner, this will show any time a GPU has the ability to mine, this is a setting however to remove the banner, go to "settings (gear at the bottom of the main dashboard)" and select Norton Crypto, in there select "Hide Crypto on the My Norton dashboard"
3) NCrypt.exe (the actual miner) is only installed when you OPT IN to the feature, it will not be present unless that action is take by the user
4) GPU check will happen at each boot, its responsiblity is checking your current GPU against a list of valid GPUs for mining, it's only use is to show the Norton Crypto banner or not

My side, this is what I don't want Norton 360 doing every boot up!! After the initial check and determination that a viable GPU is not present that supports Crypto Norton should not trigger another check at each startup. 

GPU check will happen at each boot, its responsibility is checking your current GPU against a list of valid GPUs for mining, it's only use is to show the Norton Crypto banner or not

But what about those that do want the feature and decide to upgrade their GPU? The automatic check would detect the new GPU and allow the offer of the feature.

An option would be to put some manual way to rescan the system for those that make this hardware change.

DING!! Hit that nail dead on its head lol. For laptops it is extremely hard to "upgrade" a GPU so a manual run/check is in order there. The PC world as we all know has the flexibility to remove and add a GPU basically at will.
