Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Backup up my Edge internet favorites on August 5th. It was at the time THE ONLY backed up file. As all my Edge favorites diseappeared yesterday morning (Microsoft problem), I ran a restore yesterday the 6th, and although it showed that it was successful, my favorites list is still empty. Now, I see that another backup was run yesterday. The only backup file I see on my sets is the one from yesterday August 6th. So, it is probably empty, as there was nothing in my favorites yesterday.

1 - does one backup set overlays the preceeding one? Why did my back up from the 5th of August (presumably containing good info disappeared?

2 - why did the restore from the presumed good backup showed successful but nothing in my favorites?

Thank you for your help, I am at a total loss here.

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

As your user account is listed as an admin account, you would just add the %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default  bookmarks files to your backup set.

It is not affected by nothing showing in the c:\users area.

FWIW ~
I recall a discussion about Firefox bookmarks.

FWIW ~
I'm thinking Edge Bookmarks & Favicons files from AppData location will backup okay.
IDK what happens with restore action to AppData location.

Maybe, restore Edge Bookmarks & Favicons files to your desktop and then copy/paste files to AppData.

FWIW ~
my preference is to employ Export/Import Edge saved Favorites .html file.  Just me.

Backup and Restore Microsoft Edge Favorites in Windows 10
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7256-backup-restore-microsoft-edge-favorites-windows-10-a-11.html

For backup and restore reasons, in the new Edge Chromium, besides exporting the favorites to an .html file and then importing it back to Edge, there is an alternative way.

The favorites of Edge are kept in a file called Bookmarks in the folder C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default.
Along with them in the same folder the icons of the favorites are kept in the file Favicons.

You can copy these two files into a safe location and whenever you need to restore the favorites you can copy them back to the Edge location.

To do that, either in the Windows search or in File Explorer type the following:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default
That will take you to the Edge location. Find the two files
Bookmarks and Favicons
and copy them to another location (e.g. your Desktop, or any location you wish).

If you want to restore your backup for any reason, first close Edge and then find your two backup files and copy them back to the Edge location, replacing the ones in the %localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default folder.

Please note that restoring the two files, will delete any new favorites you have saved to Edge since you last backed up the two favorites files.

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Curious, did you check Restore All Files and Categories? did you Restore to Original Location?  Edge was closed?

==========================================

Maybe, download files to desktop -> then copy/paste files to AppData location.

Download files from Cloud Backup

  1. Go to https: //my. Norton. com.

  2. Click Sign In.

  3. Enter your Norton account email address and password and click Sign In.

  4. In the My Norton page, in the Cloud Backup tile, click View Backup Sets.

  5. Select the backup set that has the file you want to download.

  6. Navigate to the file you want to download.

If you know the file name, you can use the search functionality to search for the particular file.

Use the Filter option to filter out the pictures and documents.

  7. Move the mouse pointer over the file name and click Download.

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Yes to all. But the backup file it restored from had nothing on it as far as favorites, as when NOrton did a new automatic backup, the favorites had already disappeared from Edge, so it backed up a file empty of favorites.

Thanks

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Thanks for your answer.

I had already checked the files hereunder,

C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default.

and

%localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default

and all they content are the 4 favorites I added this morning.

The Favicons files seems populated, but I am afraid that things are going to be even more messed up if I restore the icons and not the favorites.

I think I will have to re-enter them one by one as I need them.

Thanks for your help, I am so upset...

My 2 8.1 laptops are going to rot in the closet, I am never starting them again.

Have a good day,

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Thanks for your answer. When I asked my first question, I thought that the Norton restore had failed. However, I found out since, thanks to everyone's help, that it is not that it did not work, it was that the files I restored from did not contain any favorites.

I since checked several times the files hereunder,

C:\Users\holiv\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default.

and

%localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default

and all they all only contained the 4 favorites I added this morning.

The Favicons files seems populated, but I am afraid that things are going to be even more messed up if I restore the icons and not the favorites.

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Hello, thanks for your answer.

Things are messed beyond repair I am afraid. When I did yesterday morning a factory reset on one of my old windows 8.1 laptops in order to gift it, getting rid of all my personal info and installed programs, as it deleted Edge, it also deleted my Edge favorites on my 2 new windows 11 laptops, they were not on line and not even turned on.

I do not think this was supposed to happen.

When Norton did a back up of the favorites later in the afternoon, it took a back up of the empty favorites file, then I restored nothing from nothing. I put an automatic backup of the favorites (the smallest file I could think of), as Norton kept pestering me with constant messages "you have not done a back up recently". Does Automatic means every day?

This is the same on BOTH windows 11 Laptops. On the second laptop there is no backup at all, I had to deinstall and reinstall NOrton after a backup failed , and there was NO WAY to change anything in the backup process when in the Fix It Now stage. I am so fed up, I used to really like NOrton, I have used it as far as I recall, but this is now too much. I do not thing I will renew.

Now, I have my second 8.1 laptop home, and when I return, I will see if I can restore from THOSE favorites, if they are still there, but:

1 -if the info is still there, will it be okay to stick AppData created under 8.1 into windows 11 AppData files? I am afraid of everything now...

2 -if I turn off the Edge sync on both new computers, is it enough,  or do I have to turn off sync somewhere else in addition ? I will of course make sure to save the current/ manually updated bookmarks and Favicons from the new laptops before I even lift the lid of the second old 8.1 laptop home...

Thanks again...

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Not sure if this is what you are seeing.

Are you using a Windows admin account for your daily use, or are you using a standard user account for daily use?

A problem I ran into was similar to yours. I use a standard user account and some configuration files, such as my favourites, are stored under my user account settings. When logged into your Windows admin account to set up the Norton Backup, if you just go to app data to backup the browser favourites, you will be backing up the admin user's favourites, not your daily standard user favourites.

From the admin user account, I had to go to C:\users\yourusername  and look for the config information I wanted to backup.

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Thanks. I will look into this to-morrow, it is evening already here.

I do not use Admin for every day. And I was able to set up the Norton backup without them asking for anything. I am so confused right now, I have to take a break (with lots of wine). I'll let you know, but, thank you, you are so nice.

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Good Morning, so, when I enter the PIN to access my Windows 11 laptops,  I am automatically signed in as an Administrator ( I clicked on my account name, and it shows that I am signed in as Admin).  So yes, I use Admin for everyday use.

I looked, and C:\users\myusername  files are empty, so this is what Norton backed up. I understand that.

The
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default  bookmarks files contain all the bookmarks I added yesterday.

As I created these bookmarks when logged as an Admin, and if I understand correctly what you said, should not it be the other around, i.e it should have populated the C:\users\yourusername files?

Thanks,

H.

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

Thank you so much, you have been most helpful. I will add the set to the norton cloud backup.

I have been exporting it to an html file in addition. Thank you so much for your kindness. I dit not say it before as I did not want you to give up on me too soon by thinking I probably was hopelessly gaga anyway, but I am now an 82 years old lady, retired Mainframe Software Engineer, my first job was in 1974 with GECC, and I retired in 2001 as a Team Leader from Motorola. In these days, there were System Programmers and Hardware Techniciens, so I never had to be involved in anything but producing code that worked... Or in the later years,  make others produce code that worked.

So I am very ignorant in several aspects of todays technologies.

You are very welcome. Glad we could help.

With all the changes you have seen in the computer industry, you will know how quickly things change. Corporate sides tend to stay fairly constant for business security reasons. The home computers are another thing all together. The developers feel that we need a change every few months. At that production rate, it is not surprising that we keep seeing software that does not always work correctly as it is released.

Re: Resore sucssful, but nothing restored.

"it is not surprising that we keep seeing software that does not always work correctly as it is released." You can say that again...

I just discovered I also lost all my Excel sheets, but I do have a back up on a key, so a few may be missing, but I will be okay. It is no surprise that they all want you to "sync" and back up your files every five minutes, I first thought that it was business related, but I firmly believe now that they know that your data will be DESTROYED somewhere along the lines thanks to their airtight programs, and want to cover their butts...

Take care...
