LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

I've had Norton and Truecrypt together for about a week now and they worked together fine, they both stayed out of each others way.. Yesterday, that changed. No, it might of even started the day before yesterday. Allow me to start there since it might help find out the issue. So, on that day, I downloaded a file, Norton flagged it(WS.Reputation.1) and removed it, I disabled Norton and downloaded it again thinking Norton made a mistake, ran it on VirusTotal.com, and 7 anti-virus programs detected danger(most of them called it a Trojan).and the file stopped being read after  the 7th positive detection. So I deleted it, ran Norton immediately, downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and they both showed no Trogan on the computer. My computer started showing symptoms of a Trojan(slowing down, not being slow to load websites, etc) this was while Norton was doing a full system scan. After the scan came up clean, file thumbnails soon started going blank(they had a blank page icon) and some even vanished all together, like Recycle Bins. Even my Chrome browser stopped loading, it wouldn't even load the settings page. So, I panicked, restarted the system, logged back on and guess what? Norton was gone. It failed to start and wouldn't respond to my request to run. It was showing up on Task manager's list of programs running but not on the list of active programs. 8 or so minutes later, just as I am about to restart, Norton suddenly ran an autofix. Then I restarted.again and everything was back to normal.

Forward to a day later, I try and mount a PNP Truecrypt folder to view a few documents before I leave overseas, and just as I opened the mounted folder and started to scroll, I got a BSOD. The error said "PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR." I thought it was just a weird mistake, so I logged on, and tried again...same error. I then fitted with the settings and tried to get my files out of that Mount but everytime I even tried to move a file an inch, I got the BSOD. I couldn't open the folder after mounting because I'd get a BSOD. I got 8 of them before I gave up and ran a BSOD viewer. They all showed that the driver that caused it was either SRTSP64.SYS or BHDrvx64.sys and it originates in ntoskrnl.exe. The BSOD's also shared the same bug check code of 0x000000ca and parameter 1 of 00000000`00000002.

I elected to then uninstall Norton, and remove the files. It worked, I got no BSOD. So I assumed the issue was over and mounted them again then installed Norton back.

Forward to today, I move the Mount to an old external(formally internal) HDD I found. I encrypted some space on that HDD and attempted to add my files over there to the external drive so I could bring them with me overseas. The moment the files touched that HDD, BSOD! She came back. Same error, same driver, same location. What do I have to do to get Norton to get along with Truecrypt short of uninstalling Norton for a refund? I don't want to do that since I really like Norton but this is getting annoying and I don't want my brand new computer to be damaged by repeated BSOD's.

This desktop computer is only 1.5  weeks out the box, so it can't be the computer.

The sit back approach wont get you anywhere.   If you want something done, you have to voice your opinion.   If no one bought up this issue, you think Norton will look at it?  I think the reason why its still taking so long because its not effecting enough people for them to resolve.

Kudos0

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

If this gets enough notice I bet Norton wouldn't take this long to resolve this issue.  The problem is there are too many people out there that has a mentally of "it will get done when it gets done" or "it is what it is"  and just have the sit and wait approach.  Too many people are in passive mode.   This would have never happened if all the users expressing how they are dissatisfy with BSOD.  I for one paid for new version and asking me to use the old version is ridiculous.  Its like buying a 2015 car and telling you its broken and tell you take the 2014 model instead.  Its so unfair that i paid for a product that has bugs and i couldn't return it because it pass the return policy date.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Considering all of the unhappy users who have expressed dissatisfaction, has Norton issued the fix?  Complaining about the problem makes perfect sense, up to a point.  But when the complaints keep coming in, and the problem isn't fixed, continuing to beat your head against a wall becomes painful.  A logical person would weigh that against the results they're getting by complaining, and then decide to either wait for the fix, or replace the product and move on.  Emotional diatribes rarely accomplish much.  So again, it is what it is.

Having said that, however, I understand your frustration.  Although it's a bit of a stretch, your '2014 car' analogy is exactly the way I feel about that 'hope & change' guy in DC.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Continue complaining is the only way to put pressure for Norton to get a fix out.  The how its going, I can guarantee there will be no fix. Let think about it, why would Norton fix it if all the complain stop and no one is saying anything.  I think the reason why this is taking so long is because there are not enough people effected.  Lets just see, remembered what i said, you let it sit, they will let it sit.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Uh oh Norton. Almost 4 months and everybody still seems to be completely in the dark on when (or if) a fix is forthcoming.

Norton should at least limit the damage by alerting users to the presence of this bug when they are installing NS 2015. At the very least there should be some kind of alert when downloading NS 2015 on a Windows 8 machine. Optimally the installer would pre-check for the existence of known incompatible software.

I would have thought that transparency, accuracy, and swiftness of information delivery regarding serious product issues would be pretty self-evident stuff to companies dealing in the security business, but apparently not. Or perhaps Norton is not really in the security business, perhaps it is just an image they would like to project. In any case this is not the first time I get the impression that Norton doesn't take itself very seriously as a security company. If they did, they would make damned sure to let their users know exactly what the status is on any attempts to fix the issue.

I'm not sure how often relevant decision makers at Norton actually read these forums, so I also left feedback via the feedback form (https://security.symantec.com/pfb/pFeedback_form.aspx) and suggest everybody with an issue does the same. Perhaps that channel will reach more people with actual power to expedite things. While you're at it also go click on the "Me Too" button (in small print at the end of the original message starting this thread, I had to search for it using Ctrl-F), I suspect a lot more people have this issue than the 8(!) people now listed.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Too many people think there is no point in complaining and think "it is what it is" , "it will when done when it gets done".  Let me tell you,  the only way to get this resolved is to keep on voicing your opinion and put pressure on Norton.  If you sit on it, they will sit on it.  The decision is up to you guys.

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

This level of delay is simply not acceptable. Can we get a Norton employee that actually has some kind of authority, to take a look at this thread?

The problem with front end employees and volunteers "handling" these issues is that the issue just ends up disappearing into the system as another bug id. Will this actually require a popular tech blog writing about it to get a relevant employee's attention?

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Hello. I had the N360 licence extended by Liliana on the PC upon which I do most of my TrueCrypt-related work (I bumped into the BSOD problem on a different PC). Initially the licence was extended until 5th April, but a few days ago it was extended until 15th April with the accompanying message that it was hoped that no further extension would be necessary. You might infer from that that a fix is close to distribution (within the next 9 days), but Norton are clearly playing their cards close to their chest.

The available evidence suggests that Norton have been working on a fix, but that it has proven more challenging than originally anticipated. I don't know if this will offer any comfort to the users of this thread.

All the best...

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

So I am one of those who complained, was convinced to be patient while I re-installed last year's product. Unlike some here, I have not given in to brow-beating on the presumption that Norton would fix this as soon as they reasonably could.

To be honest, I'm not so sure anymore. While there is an obvious possibility that the fix is proving more complicated than perhaps they thought, I have been doing some research on my own and for the first time I am not so sure that they aren't just dragging their feet as some others have surmised.

While I cannot in any way independently verify this, there are users of another encryption program who have determined that the problem resides in a file called SRTSP64.SYS. Norton's version of this driver is not behaving when virtual disks are mounted. It has to do with whether the call to create the virtual disk is to create a PNP or a non-PNP disk. The encryption programs are expecting one and the driver is crashing since it is looking for the other.

If this is indeed the case, it does seem to me that taking 4 months to fix this is preposterous.

It looks like Norton takes 4 Months to fix any of its problems with NS.

Here is a major problem reported on Nov 27 and was finally fixed this week.

https://community.norton.com/en/forums/identity-safe-glitch

NS was released 6 Months ago and still has major problems.

I hate to see what will happen when V23 is released 6 Months from now.

In the last few years every new version was released with problems and it took 6 Months to clean them up.

Norton really has some internal problems and need to get their act together.

@ GeneJockey Yes - that Boxcryptor forum thread, and the fix that is available on version 2 of boxcryptor has been around for months. Unfortunately, it only works on the newer version of the program - not the original which I am using. However, clearly Boxcryptor have identified the problem and developed their own workaround in no time. My best guess is that this problem has long been identified and fixed but Norton can't be bothered to issue a patch just for this problem alone and are scheduling it for release as part of a larger patch at some future date. Presumably they have deemed it insufficiently important thanks to it only affecting users of a certain class of program.

Hello Gene

I been waiting about 6 hours to give the official word that the new patch 22.2.0.31 is out and is being given out in a phased in manner. This means a few users will be given the patch first to see how it is behaving and if any one is having problems. It is being given out at first only in English. It is being given out thru live update and it requires a reboot. Some will receive just a part of it and others will get the whole patch at once. It usually takes about a week for the phase in manner to end if all goes well. You can read more about the patch at this site. The site will refer you to another link to get more information about it. I do hope that this patch will help you all out. I know you have been waiting a long time for this fix. Thanks

Re: LONG STORY: Norton BSOD me when I use Truecrypt

Well, obviously I have not yet had the opportunity to test extensively (only have the new version up and running for less than an hour) but what I *CAN* say is that I have already tried it out with the TWO different encryption programs that I am using - TrueCrypt and SafeHouse.

In both programs I can once again mount and dismount virtual drives, no BSOD, no error messages. Files are all there, encrypted vaults open and close as they should.

So far so good from me therefore. Hope this is useful info.

P.S. I am running Windows 8.1Pro

Thanks for all your patience.

We have released the 22.2.0.31 patch (this version is being released in a phased manner) for the Norton Security/Norton Security with Backup products. See Announcement . Please run Live Update until all the updates are installed.

This update fixes the conflicts between Norton products and Encryption softwares.

I can see few of you already reported the fix resolved the issue. Please let me know if you still face the problem.

Note: Currently, this update is only available for English. Other languages will be available shortly.

I don't believe the patch is available in German yet. It is only being given out in English for now. The version you are showing is before NS has been updated at all. You  have to run live update and reboot to bring your program up to date. The new Patch in other languages will be released shortly. The version you are showing is the brand new version which is now out of date until you bring it up to date. Thanks.

Thanks for the fix. MS Office 2010 Starter works fine now.

I have to ask though, this is posted as the fixes in this release:

======================================

Below are the changes and fixes in NS/NSBU 22.2.0.31:

- Fixed an issue where BSOD caused due to conflict with encryption softwares [Link]
- Few backend sever fixes

=======================================

Now if the "backend sever" (I assume "server") was not related to the BSOD, which I assume it is NOT the case as the files on our computers caused the BSOD, WHY wasn't the fix for the BSOD put out sooner? Inquiring minds want to know.
