Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

Hello

I believe a recent update 22.7.0.75 is causing my windows 7 action center to tell me that Norton 360 is turned off, as well as Nortons firewall. However my Norton 360 icon has green ticks and is running, but windows is telling me its not. I've had this before a long time ago and restarting the pc fixed the problem, but after a few reboots the problem still remains. Is anyone else having this issue?

Same prob also on 3 different pc's running win7 home & pro. If I go to the Norton security suite app | security | Advanced and stop & restart the auto-protect under computer and stop/start the smart firewall under network the problem goes away.  But this has to be done every time the pc is restarted.

Great catch!  You can even right click on the Norton tray icon and select to disable the Smart Firewall and Auto-Protect, and then re-enable and the action center errors go away ... at least until the next reboot

Hopefully this info can help narrow down what the issue may be.  It seems like by shutting Norton off and on again it sends a message to Windows that it's active and working

Having this exact same problem - on Windows 7.

Downloaded the new NIS version in the small hours of this morning...everything was fine upon reboot. Just did Windows updates (with lots of security updates) and had to reboot again, and now my action center is telling me there's a problem....Won't let me alter any of the settings either, or at least it doesn't seem to do anything when I try to confirm I want Norton to control security through Action Center.

However, when I go to Control Panel - System Security - Windows Fire Wall - it tells me that everything is being handled by Norton, but still the Action Center doesn't agree. Don't know what's going on. Norton running green and seems secure but very concerned about why Windows seems to not agree with that.

Just tried right clicking on the NIS icon and clicking disable auto-protect/smart firewall" and then enabling again and it's removed the red x from the Action Center icon for me

Me too:(((

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

Same issue.  Yesterday, I installed something like 17 Microsoft patches.  While I was at it, checked Norton Internet Security for updates.  Updated to 22.7.0.75.  Action Center lit up red on Spyware/Unwanted software, Virus Protection,  and Firewall.  Uninstalled NIS, rebooted, rebooted again, went to upgradecenter.norton.com and selected V20 as product so that it would download the latest version.  Performed install.  No issues with Action Center.  Ran LiveUpdate repeatedly until it said no more updates.  Action Center lit up again.  From Action Center, attempt to turn on NIS, which of course is already on.  Will not turn on, update button is greyed out.  Win 7 Pro x64.  On another computer running Win 7 Pro x86, installed all MS Patches and upgraded NIS completely without issue.  Action Center is fine.

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

If I right-click on NIS icon in task bar by clock, I can disable firewall, then enable.  This makes the firewall message go away in Action Center.  Disable Auto-Protect is grey, can not turn off AV

Same here, all red shields, norton not running after update.

EDIT: originally it was just windows 7, just downloaded on vista, same issue all norton turned off.

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

Is anyone working on this problem? Are we at risk/is NIS functioning properly? Do we all need to call tech support or what? Can we get an update on what's going on and when this is going to be fixed?

Thanks, Bubba41!

After suggested by you actions to OFF/ON on NIS icon, all became OK!

However, it means that NIS was upgraded incorrectly:(((

So, what is to be done in the future to not have such problems again?

The on/off trick on the icon works to remove the error, but only until you restart the computer.

Same exact problem here, it started on my desktop yesterday, now this morning it's happening on my laptop. Same exact screen shot as above, windows 7 64bit not recognizing security software. I did the disable and restart, it's OK for now but I imagine it's going to happen after I restart. Don't ask for a screen shot, it's exactly the same as above. HELP!

Also, haven't had any protection updates come down via live update since yesterday, which troubles me and I feel could be part of a larger problem with security/functionality.

I am having the same problem and I am hoping that I am being protected even if Norton says the protection is not turned on.  I haven't installed my latest MS updates. If I had, I am sure I would be blaming that.  I usually wait a few days to manually install the patches and updates in my Windows 7 computer.  Haven't checked the laptop yet.  I just hope the computer is protected and the solution is found quickly.  Thank you, everyone, for sharing your information!

I'm also having the same problem.

Norton icon in task bar is green marked but Windows 7 Action center says that Norton Security is OFF for both Spyware and Protection from Unwanted Software (maybe not the correct words but my OS is not in English) and Virus Protection.

I also would like to know if my system is protected or not.

Thanks.

Just an F.Y.I for everyone and before the norton staff suggest it, a full uninstall and re-install does NOT fix the problem.

Hmm. Relieved that I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm not overly concerned since Norton 360 does seem to be running, but I'll admit to my less rational side being somewhat on-edge. I'm guessing that the patch was made mostly with Windows 10 in mind; hopefully the issue can get corrected soon for those of us who aren't planning on upgrading" our current PCs.

It has definitely affected the windows updater too.

My svchost is running at 100% cpu and the checking for updates never ends.

The lack of input from the norton staff is really disappointing.

'Windows Update' has been problematic for sometime. My 'SVHOST.EXE' runs at at least 50%, until the 'WU' installs; then, it runs at something sensible.
You either leave your PC on, until the 'WU' pops in, or put 'WU' on 'MANUAL', and address 'WU' the following weekend.

I have exactly the same problem. Windows is claiming that all protection is down and everything is flaged red. This problem came after Norton update few days ago. Also Windows update does not work at all. Please advice what to do...I'm very troubled at the moment if I'm secured or not...

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

My guess is that it's a windows issue. I have 3 computers that say I've never ran an update, there all older computers, laptops. When I  try to manually update, it just spins for hours.  Never did get it to work yet. Maybe it's Microsoft's way of saying, get windows 10 or you get no updates! Communist thinking possibly? Certainly isn't the democratic way, that's for sure.. Peace!

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

I have never had any issues updating on any of my pc`s until today.

Windows 7 took about 30 minutes, it is usually done in less than 5, and my vista pcs just ran for hours and never passed the checking stage.

As much as i know my vistas need upgrading, i have never once had any problems with them, until now.

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

I have to say I also haven't had a problem running windows update on my W7 comp.  Currently it is showing me the number of updates available, info it retrieved this morning before the second Norton update attempt with no problem.  I already have it set to manually install the updates.  So, it must have something to do with the update... I only lost it after each Norton update attempt.

Kudos0

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

Messed up my W7 updates also.  Let it run all night and they eventually came through.  One would think the Norton staff would have enough sense not to release a major update on the second Tuesday of the month.

This is not the first time for this error.  I do not know if this problem belongs to Norton or to Microsoft but I have had it once or twice before with W7.

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

Concerning the windows update issue which affected me also, the first time I checked for new windows updates (set to manual) it only showed me one (This was after doing the Norton update). I thought this was strange because usually theres a bunch of updates to download, so I tried checking again and it would endlessly search never showing no results. I did this a couple times and eventually went to bed. The next day I tried again and straight away I had 19 available updates to download (They were all released the previous night). These took about 40minutes to even start downloading, which has been a common thing these last couple of months. Now when I check for updates it searches for a few seconds and tell me there aren't any new ones available so I guess its back to normal. It may just have been Windows update having a bad day but I don't really know.

If you are worried about whether you're Norton is running properly, check to see if everything is green ticked on the icon, if you can run updates and scans then I think you should be fine. I haven't ran into any other problems other than the conflicting action center message.

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

Thanks to everyone reporting this issue.  I have the same issue and it is nice to know that it is just not me (it is not anything I or we did).   Clearly it is something to do with 22.7.0.75 version.

I think the Microsoft update program is a separate issue.  After Microsoft issues new patches every 2nd Tues of the month the Microsoft update process can go south for a few days for Win 7 users.  This is a know issue that is stressing out a lot of Win 7 users.

I think it is coincidence that 22.7.0.75 occurred near  the normal patch day so it appears to be related. I am not sure these issues are related.

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

Sidenote: I managed to get Windows update working.  I had earlier during my first go at getting this to work yesterday, noted that turning off the antivirus and firewall for a moment caused Norton to recommend a fix, which then turned the two functions back on.  Another person mentioned doing this as well earlier in this post.  Doing this cancelled the red flags in the action center.  Then, I went to windows update and manually reviewed the important updates.  One of the updates was rather large (over 50mbs) so I unchecked it.  I ran the update install and sure enough, it loaded the first batch of Microsoft updates.  I restarted my comp to set the updates.  Then, I repeated all of these steps until all of the Microsoft updates were complete.  As of right now, Microsoft Updates reads no more updates available.  Success.  The only thing I'm doing now is regularly hitting Live Update hoping the fix for the action center issue will be in the next Norton update.  I hope this helps.

I agree.   Microsoft update not working or working slow is a separate issue not related to the the Norton 22.7.0.75 problem of not reporting correctly to the Action Center.    Not much to do but wait for a fix.

I too am having this issue.  Turning auto protect and firewall off and then re-enabling works until you reboot the computer.  I don't like turning these protections off even for only a few seconds plus I still want the thing to work correctly.  Hopefully a fix will be coming in future updates soon.

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

Same exact thing here!  Everything was fine until the 22.7.075 update a few hours ago.

I was running NIS 22.6 on Win7 x64.  I got the update a couple hours ago.  The update seemed to go fine.  No problem with the action center upon the installation.  Then after a reboot, my Win 7 action center has the red X and reports virus protection and firewall are both turned off.

I ran a remove/reinstall ... after NIS 22.6 was installed everything was fine until it updated to 22.7 when the action center problem came back.

I then did an uninstall via the control panel followed by running the Norton removal tool.  I then downloaded a new copy of NIS.  As soon as NIS 22.7 installed the action center problem came back.

On the plus side, it does look like NIS is actually running.  If I click on Windows Firewall on the control panel, it says it's being managed by Norton.  And when I check my NIS history it shows firewall activity.

I think everything may be OK except for the Action Center erroneously reporting this issue?

Again this started directly after the 22.7 update and I already did two different re-install methods that didn't help.  I already spent the past few hours on this issue and unless there really is an issue with NIS not running, I guess we just wait for a fix/update as it seems this update wasn't ready for primetime

Re: Windows action center saying Norton is not running after the 22.7.0.75 update

I've got to be honest that I really don't want to install any logging tools on my computer, but if I get a chance this weekend I may give it a shot.  As for screen shots, see the attached.  I'm running Win7 x64 SP1, all up to date except for any updates from today or this week.  I do appreciate your quick response though.

Everything appears to be running OK with NIS in the green, and even if I click to trust the publisher of WSCStub.exe, it doesn't do anything or make a difference.
