Repeated Same Patch Installation from Live Update from ~ 28 Dec 2021

I have Norton Security Deluxe v 22.21.11.46 with Win10 x64 and every time I run Live Update I am offered the exact same patch for application now or later. Installing the patch and restarting does not make the patch go away for next update even after a restart or power down.  So far I have disabled fast start in Windows Power Button options, cleared caches and histories, used the Norton Remove and Reinstall Product tool and then redone all updates/patching but these have not helped.

I notice that usually when a previous patch was applied, the next update sees a 'new product version' certificate registration, and maybe the need to replace an old and dead shortcut with the new one from the desktop. This is not happening with the current patch updates.

Any further ideas, or do I just wait it out until after the New Year festivities to see if a fix comes along?

Hello AlPhi. Has running updates since your post produced any positive results for you? There were some Norton services issues recently that have since cleared.

No unfortunately. There have been many NSD application updates since my first post but it may require a new patch (ie not the one that keeps being reinstalled) and its proper after-administration before this can be resolved properly. Just to add that the Norton Security support tool when run says there is an issue with my Norton even after using the Norton Remove and Reinstall Product and then updating, but the support tool merely tries to fix it by installing that same patch again. The tool then says it is fixed but on next update there's that patch offered again. I remain convinced that the new patch version is not being registered properly after installation. Thanks for the reply though.

Re: Repeated Same Patch Installation from Live Update from ~ 28 Dec 2021

I've had this exact same problem for almost a month now. I’ve tried everything mentioned in this article, along with several other suggestions from other groups. I’ve disabled fast startup, completely removed Norton Security, with and without the Remove and Reinstall utility, did a full cleanup of residual Norton files, temp files, caches, etc., then reinstalled a fresh copy of the latest version (22.21.11.46) directly from my.norton.com. None of this solved the problem. As a last resort, I ran a full format on my OS drive, and installed a fresh copy of the latest Windows 10 release (Windows 10 Pro Ver. 21H2 - Build 19044.1466). After the fresh OS install, everything is working great, and my computer is running better than it ever has… except for Norton. Even after a fresh install of Norton on a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro, it continues to prompt me for the same patch install over and over again. Isn't this something Norton should be helping us with, or are we not complaining loud enough yet to merit their attention?

Thanks for your help.

When you guys removed your product as a possible solution, did you perform a removal only using the advanced settings in the removal tool? Then reboot. Then remove ALL the leftover folders for Norton and the Norton installer manually then reboot a second time. Then reinstall your product?

Yes, that is one of the avenues I’ve been down a few times while trying to fix this. I’ve let the Norton removal tool run both ways, remove only and remove and reinstall. And yes, I did a pretty thorough cleanup of residual Norton files and common temp files, along with all the recommended reboots.

I’m a little surprised that disabling fast startup didn’t fix this. I’ve read several articles that suggested that. But this one seems to be a little deeper than that. I have an older computer running Windows 10 Pro Ver. 2004, with the exact same version of Norton Security I’m running on this computer. However, the Norton on the older computer doesn’t have the patching issue.

Thanks again for your help.

Just to add that from my perspective as the thread originator, product users shouldn't really need to jump through hoops to try to find a workaround. It is good that another poster has now confirmed the same issue happening over the same timescale. (Phew!)

NSD latest version fully updated and authorised to change folders etc is not properly registering the latest NSD patch for next update check or boot in Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 19044) (19041.vb_release.191206-1406) on my PC.

Whilst I don't mind helping to trace the issue, it should not need special measures on our part just to patch the product - especially after a full clean and reinstall and especially after using Norton's own diagnostic, support and product reinstallation tools. I think Norton should investigate why this particular NSD patch would behave so differently to most of the previous ones. Good luck!

@AlPhi Your version / build of Windows 10 version 191206-1406 appears to be an old insider build. Norton doesn't promise that their products will function correctly on insider or BETA Operating systems. I would update to the latest standard version 21H2 build19044.1469.

@Shott You are also running a version of Windows that should also be updated to the latest Windows 10 release.

Re: Repeated Same Patch Installation from Live Update from ~ 28 Dec 2021

My OS version is and was Windows 10 Home 21H2 build 19044.1469. The 19044 was in my OS declaration above - I suspect the second bit in brackets is included in the DxDiag report just as an OS of origin statement. It seems that even MS can't get their act totally together. :)

Anyway, my OS is fully updated, just not the current optional cumulative Windows update preview.

Oh and Shott says in their post above ".. the latest Windows 10 release (Windows 10 Pro Ver. 21H2 - Build 19044.1466)." which is hardly obsolete yet.

Re: Repeated Same Patch Installation from Live Update from ~ 28 Dec 2021

Yes, just to assure all that I’m running the latest version of Windows 10, here’s my specs again:

Windows 10 Pro Version: 21H2 Build: 19044.1466 Installed on: 1/‎14/‎2022

It’s 100% up to date except for the optional 2022-01 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5009596). And it’s a fresh install that’s otherwise running well. So. I’m not sure where to go with this. I’ve done everything short of standing on my head trying to remedy this. Should we expect some help from Norton, or should we sit tight and hope it goes away?

P.S. I just checked Microsoft. The latest release of Windows 10 is listed as 19044.1503, which is apparently applied with the optional KB5009596 update. My version, 19044.1466 is dated 2022-01-11. Is there reason to believe updating to release 19044.1503 might fix this?

Re: Repeated Same Patch Installation from Live Update from ~ 28 Dec 2021

Updated to 1503 and also had a couple of other minor OS updates. Restarted, and ran NSD LiveUpdate and had the same patch again plus a couple of other updates. Installed the NSD patch and updates and restarted. Ran LiveUpdate and had the same patch again ...

This is partly what I meant above about jumping through hoops as I do not normally install optional OS previews.

Can we be clear here, it is not a problem with the patch as that downloads and installs just fine. The problem is that NSD (on some systems at least) does not get the product updated signal that registers the patch installation and changes the product version number as necessary. Hence Norton keeps sending the same patch as it doesn't know it has already been updated here. This is the bit that Norton needs to address (in my opinion).

Re: Repeated Same Patch Installation from Live Update from ~ 28 Dec 2021

After 25+ years of performing I.T. professional work at every level, I’ve developed a well-deserved apprehension for installing Windows updates straight out of the gate. I’ve spent countless evening and weekend hours cleaning up Windows update catastrophes. Just as frustrating are the times I’ve shot myself in the foot by applying the “latest and greatest” Windows updates to my own computers, and then spent days recovering from the disaster. Now you’re suggesting I apply an optional 653 MB OS patch that was only released 3 days ago?

I hope you don't mind, but can I ask again… do you have reason to believe the 1503 patch will fix the problem?

P.S. It looks like the 1503 patch didn't work for AlPhi. I’m now convinced more than ever this is a Norton specific problem, and third-party work-arounds are not likely going to solve this. Needless to say, it’s been pretty frustrating jumping through all these non-productive hoops trying to solve a problem that appears to be Norton’s responsibility.

Thanks again!

All my systems are current with version 19044.1503, they don't exibit the behaviors being discussed here. The latest WU installs service stack updates as well as some minor bug fixes. Windows 10 and 11. I'm forwarding the thread up to an Admin / Norton team to see what they can help with. In the meantime, have either of you downloaded and ran the MATS tool? If not run it to see what the tool reports, post that information here when possible.  Save the tool in a location where you can easily locate it after download. I downloaded and ran the MATS tool you linked (I trust you!) and it says Norton Services needs attention: ccSet_SCS is not installed. The 'click for solution' first of all tells me that my internet connection is not working (really, then how am I here ?) and then anyway goes on to say ' You have encountered an unknown problem: Symantec Technical does not know the exact cause and cannot reproduce it'.

All other aspects of the MAT report are green - including that I am running the latest Norton software!

Maybe we are getting somewhere now? I hope so.

@ SoulAsylum: You don't have NSD though, you have NSU.

Re: Repeated Same Patch Installation from Live Update from ~ 28 Dec 2021

All: The NGC "patches" are product updates, I DO have N360 Deluxe on a couple of devices, Norton Security Ultra on a ton of others. Running the MATS tool, it will auto detect the product installed and its version. The NGC updates will cover the current supported products in the latest products update board posting. So the "version" of the NGC patches will be the same, features will differ across each type of Norton product installed. The patching processes are always going to be the same.

Re: Repeated Same Patch Installation from Live Update from ~ 28 Dec 2021

I agree, it appears this problem is only affecting certain systems. I have other computers, all running slightly different versions of Windows 10 Pro. This computer is the only system suffering the problem, so I don’t believe this a wide-spread Norton patch problem. In the grand scheme of things, it may only be affecting a small number of systems… I don’t know. What I know is, I have an otherwise healthy, modern computer that Norton just suddenly started acting up on, and I’ve done everything I can think of, including a format and reinstall of Windows 10, attempting to solve it. The only thing I haven’t done is apply the latest optional Windows preview patch published a few days ago. Also, I know that other people are having the same issue with the same patch. Is there something in common running on our systems that would suddenly prevent Norton from registering a patch?

Re: Repeated Same Patch Installation from Live Update from ~ 28 Dec 2021

In case this helps, I have noticed that sometimes if you run LiveUpdate, get the NSD patch request, install it and then immediately run LiveUpdate again then you *may* get a 'Your product is up to date' result. However, now restart or shut down and then later run LiveUpdate and the same patch is back. It is as though the latest patch registration is not surviving a system restart/boot. I have cleared all caches that I have access to and so I don't think it is an easy-access cache issue. Any other ideas from the team, given this additional information?

Just to add that my system is a fairly new build, ordered from OverClockers in November last year, and with a totally new installation of Win10 and a fresh software and application installation as I did not clone my old system's boot drive. NSD was first cleanly downloaded and installed on it as a further licence on my previous NSD account. This therefore *may* have been the first NSD patch on this new system which you could probably confirm from your records, but I am unsure of that.
