ATTRAY.exe shutdown error after installing Norton AntiTrack

After installing Norton AntiTrack, I get an unknown software exception error 0xe0434352 when I shut down my Windows 10 workstation.  The OS has all current patches and drivers installed.  A web search shows a Nov 30, 2021 report of this error on the forum that was quickly closed without any details on how to resolve the issue.  A search of this forum produces no results.  Any tips on how to fix the issue would be appreciated.

Re: ATTRAY.exe shutdown error after installing Norton AntiTrack

Hello AustinJerry. What OS "version" is on this machine? And do you have any .NET cumulative updates awaiting installation? The error you posted is NORMALLY caused by a faulty .NET install. There are a couple of things to try to correct that issue.

1. Run CMD as administrator.
To do this, click Start, type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

2. Run DISM on CMD.
Type the following command, and then press Enter.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Important: When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions.

3. Run SFC on CMD.
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

Give these a go to see if they find/correct any issues and post back your results so that we can assist further.

Re: ATTRAY.exe shutdown error after installing Norton AntiTrack

Thank you for the kind reply.  I followed your suggestions to the letter.  Unfortunately, I am still getting the shutdown error.  The error goes away if I uninstall Norton AntiTrack.  I have attached screenshots of the CMD window as well as the CBS.log.

You are most welcome. The DISM seems to show things are in order health wise yet the CBS log does indicate there was issues within your installation of Windows 10. Edited:

The highlighted issue is discussed in this Microsoft thread:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/sfc-scan-and-cbslo...

Did you reboot the computer after running the commands and recheck Windows Updates again for anything that may be missing? What is the version of AT installed? Knowing that info will help me with getting assistance if we have to escalate the issue.

Yes, I re-booted and re-checked Windows update.  I'll check out the discussion of the Microsoft error.  ATTray.exe version:

Re: ATTRAY.exe shutdown error after installing Norton AntiTrack

After reading the post on the Microsoft Windows Forum, I don't think there was agreement on what actions to take to resolve the ATTray.exe shutdown error.  I am reluctant to try any of the recommendations.

The solution to the issue is actually quite simple:  uninstall Norton AntiTrack (and cancel the subscription).  After uninstalling, the shutdown exception goes away.

Re: ATTRAY.exe shutdown error after installing Norton AntiTrack

Given that your responses are:

I am reluctant to try any of the recommendations.

My recommendation is open a case with Norton support. They may find something that we cannot see here. Conversely! Norton isn't always the issue, I won't defend them in that respect other than to say. Decades of experience has always taught me, the obvious solution most times is not the one we think or wish for. You have a registry issue related to a "security permissions" issue, there are many ways that could happen.  The Microsoft forums are the best avenue to get assistance for it. Just my advice.

Re: ATTRAY.exe shutdown error after installing Norton AntiTrack

Thank you for following up.  I was not able to resolve the ATTray.exe issue.  However, I have decided to cancel my subscription to Norton Anti-Track.  Most of my web browsing is done on an iOS device, and Norton currently does not offer an anti-tracking solution for iOS.  Now that the software is uninstalled, I am no longer getting the shutdown error.
