Microsoft Defender Antivirus Compatibility with Norton

I noticed that the Win 10 OS automatically updates periodically "Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus".  Can (or should) MS Defender Antivirus software be running concurrently with the Norton 360 software? I have the "Periodic scanning" switch set to ON in the Windows Security settings.

We do not recommend enabling Microsoft Defender's periodic scanning feature on a Windows 11/10 system having Norton protection. Periodic scanning is redundant and will require unnecessary additional power consumption and may result in conflicting notifications and messaging. In addition, periodic scanning can interfere with the protection features of your Norton product.

Thank you - I was hoping that it would be OK to have both scans operating; feels like having a belts and suspenders type of system (two products searching for potential threats) would be safer.

If we scan periodically with Malwarebytes as recommended by many here in these forums then why not do the same with Windows Defender?

These scans are not real time protection but just some program called up to run on demand.

Norton is not saying you cannot keep this feature enabled. As noted it is not a real time protection. That part  of Defender is disabled when a third party AV is installed.

You can enable MD Periodic Scanning.  Norton will put a large pop up on the desktop warning against it but you can ignore that.  Last time I had Periodic Scanning enabled on a machine running Norton I found Norton would run a Full System Scan as soon as MD had run a scan, every day!
