Norton Backup Set file size smaller than size of "Documents" folder

I am testing Norton Backup using an external hard drive. When I "Preview File List", it shows the backup file size will be 17G. However, the total size of my "Documents" folder is 23G. Does Norton Backup compress files as part of it's backup function?
