norton backup conflicts

Norton Security Suite causes conflicts with my backup operations.  How do I temporarily shut it down completely?  I turn off scheduled tasks and disconnect from the internet during backup, but, automatic background Norton operations create temporary files that interfere with my backup software (Retrospect Professional) and even lead to complete backup failure.  This is worst on a client computer that Retrospect backs up after finishing with the backup server.

The closest you can come to disabling the NSS backup routing is to set it to manual. I would also create a very small backup set that can run and finish in a minute or less so that when it insists it must run it will do no damage and be done quickly.

I have experienced a similar problem.  I use NovaStor Backup Professional which does a weekly full system backup and a daily incremental backup.  Everything was fine until I upgraded from NIS 2011 to NIS 2012.  Since then, I have been unable to obtain a successful full system backup.  In each instance, the backup has either terminated prior to completion or has totally failed (without creating a job failure log to indicate what is happening).  The incremental backups have functioned normally and have completed without error.  NIS 2012 is the only program change that I have made and it must be the cause of the problem.  Is there some setting or other change that I can make to solve the problem?

I run NIS 2012 and also use a different program to do my backups [Ghost]. I have not had any conflicts between them since the upgrade/installation of 2012 over 2011. The fact that they are both Norton may have some bearing on the problem.

I don't know of any way to disable the backup feature in NIS but I would expect that postion of the program to be ooptional. I'll have to see if I can find a moderator and get an answer.

NIS does not have any Backup features included in the suite.  Norton Online Backup is a separate service / product that Symantec includes a quick link to on the GUI of NIS 2012 / 2011.

The users that are experiencing backup issues, can you check to see if VSS (Volume Shadow Service) and DCOM settings are proper and running on the affected systems. Retrospect Professional has a kb article about this here.  As a side note, I have used non-Symantec backup software along with NIS / N360 for years and never had a problem.

The OP mentioned Norton Security Suite while Robert mentioned NIS 2011 upgraded to 2012.

mrmap, can you confirm which Norton product you have? Is it N360 or the Comcast version (known as CNSS)? If you do have N360 or CNSS and not NIS then you can turn off the backup feature from View Details link and then click on Turn off backup. At least I believe that is where it is located.

mrmap and Robert, please tell us the exact version of Norton software you have from Support > About menu.

If you have NIS did you click on the Backup button which dbrisendine mentioned, and set up an online backup?

I am running NIS version 19.7.1.5.  I have noticed one thing about the interaction between Norton and NovaBackup Professional 13.  I thought that I had set NIS to go into quiet mode while the backup was running.  This does not appear to be the case since scheduled backups do not in fact start the backup program (NovaBackx.exe) running.  Instead scheduled backups appear to run off of a service which is loaded upon Windows XP startup and are constantly running.  When the script triggers the backup to begin, another process (vssvc.exe) is initiated and the three processes appear to create the backup.  If I designate the NovaBackup services (nsCtrl.exe and nsService.exe) as programs putting Norton into quiet mode, I am afraid that this will put Norton perpetually in quiet mode & affect my computer's security.  Do you have any thoughts or suggestions as to this?  If being in quiet mode will not compromise security, I will try putting these services in the quiet mode list and see if this solves the conflict problem, although I think that this would perpetually prevent Norton from running its many background tasks.
