Norton online back up error code A2203

My last successful backup was on Feb16, 2013.  I have tried to correct this unsuccessfully by adding a new computer, and downloading the NortonOnlineBackup.exe file several times.

I have also tried manual backups.

There are some days that the backup progress indicates "Awaiting agent backup" for over 24 hours.

I have changed my power settings so the computer never sleeps.

I cannot get the backup to work.  I need some guidance!

Thanks!.  I ran chkdsk /f,  there are no issues with the computer.

During this process of developing a new backup set I still had problems with the backup stalling.  I traced this to large (>500MB) iTunes purchased video files. Since I can re-download purchased iTunes content I omitted the iTunes Media\TV Shows folder from the backup set.  (iTunes videos were not on the computer before I started this thread thus they were included in the prior backup set.)

Hello thegs,

Awaiting agent backup means its trying to reach the NOBU backend. If its sitting there for a long period of time without activity it indicates that connection is getting blocked.

  • Are you using a wired or wireless connection?
  • If wireless, have you tried connecting via an Ethernet cable to see if the issue persists?
  • Are you using the service in a home or corporate environment?

I am using a wired connected.  The Ethernet cable is connected and working. I am using this service in a hotel in South Korea. I use a VPN service.  I have tried to backup through the VPN service and without the VPN service.  The backup worked successfully for over a year.  This is a recent problem.

Essentially the error is a MD5 validation failure. The MD5 security hash is not matching what we have so its resulting in that error. In short part of what is used for security and validation is saying both sides don't fully match up. If you can tell me the precise date it started we can have engineering roll your history back a day prior to the error.

Once done try a backup and see how things progress from there.

Tech support helped to resolve this.  They uninstalled the program, deleted cache, etc., and reinstalled the program.  They tested the backup on a small set of files and it was successful.  I am in the process of incrementally and manually backing up folders because my upload speed is severely throttled.  (I am not in the U.S. right now).  I add one folder type (my documents,  my photos, my music, etc) each day.

Hi Thegs,

That's good news to hear. They pretty much worked around the error by purging the old set instead. I'd strongly suggest running a chkdsk /f on your computer. That'll run a scan on the drive to help ensure there are no damaged files or sectors. That's one of the probable reasons 2203 errors start coming up. It's also preventive maintenance too.

Also if all is now resolved to your satisfaction please mark this post as solved.
