Publisher files not backing up

Hello.

I'm relatively new to Norton Online Backup - have opened my Access, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, and FrontPage files, but Publisher files are not found.  Only one file in Publisher, a png, has been found.

Any advice?

Thank you.

Re: Publisher files not backing up

Hello Kelise13,

The server has a default list of file extensions that are set to backup when you select by file type.  What are the file extensions that did not get backed up?  I can submit them to the development team for future releases.  In the mean time you can add specific files and folders to your backup set to ensure that nothing is missed.

(Reminder, we are not designed to backup the entire PC or programs installed, only the data you have created.)

To select specific folders please login to your account online and next to the specific computer profile please click on Settings.  In the next window below the box for file types you will find the option to add specific folders.  Browse to the location of your data and select the specific folder where the files are located.  For example below are the two directory paths to your Documents folder depending on your operating system. (Keep in mind "username" would be replaced by your username.)

Win XP

C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents

Win Vista/7/8

C:\Users\username\Documents

Please mark this thread as solved if this has resolved your issue.

Re: Publisher files not backing up

Publisher files have .pub extentions and although not as common as the other Office files they really need to be added.

I'm not sure if Visio is included or not but those files are .vsd

Hello Dave,

Thank you for the information.  I will go ahead and submit the information to the development team.

Re: Publisher files not backing up

Neither extension is part of the Office documents selection. Nicole has submitted the requested items to our development team. The more constructive feedback we get like this the better we can make the product so keep them coming.

Re: Publisher files not backing up

OK - based on what I'm reading, Publisher files are not yet able to be backed up.  They are an integral part of my work, both here at home and at my business - I hope they will be added soon.

Re: Publisher files not backing up

Until it is added you should be able to add the file extention yourself.

I don't have the program installed at the moment to test it, but from the help file:

Including file extensions

Norton Online Backup scans your computer for the files that are classified in the selected file categories. However, if a particular file type does not come under these file categories, you can directly include the file extension in your backup set. Norton Online Backup scans your backup source for all files with the selected file extension.

Note:

You cannot type a wildcard character in the text box. For example, you cannot type mp* to include all MPEG file extensions such as mp1, mp2, mp3, and mp4. You must include each file extension individually.

Note:

You can remove a file extension that you already added, by clicking the red cross mark (x) that corresponds to that file extension.

To include a file extension

  1. Log on to Norton Online Backup.
  2. On the home page, click Settings that corresponds to the picture icon of a computer.
  3. On the Settings page, click the What tab.
  4. On the What tab, under File Categories, check Include File Extensions.
  5. Type the file extension characters in the text box and then click the plus (+) icon.
  6. Repeat step 5 for each file extension that you want to add.
  7. On the Settings page, click Save.

Re: Publisher files not backing up

You can also create custom rules which in some cases are a better way to go. You can read up on how to do that via this knowledgebase article:

Creating a custom rule to include or exclude specific file types or folders in Norton Online Backup
