100 CPU usage

Hello, I saw a post about this but it was about two years old.

I have a Dell Desktop 4550 which is quite old but has a new

hard drive. I have Norton AntiVirus version 16.8.0 (plus other

numbers afterwards)  I have had it for over one year.

Everything has been working great until today. My computer

went to 100 percent on the CPU usage. I downloaded process

explorer and it told me that 98 percent of the CPU usage was

from Symantec Service Framework. (it is the CCsvchost or something

like that)  I googled the problem and there was a suggestion to turn off

Windows Update or Live Update. I just turned off Windows update and

the fan seems to have quieted down and the CPU usage is under 20 percent.

Is there a another fix other than turning off Windows Update?  They have both

been on since I had Norton and I don't understand why all of a sudden I get

this problem.  (the first thing I did was turn the computer off and then back on

and that worked for about five minutes. Then, I turned off Windows Update)

Thanks,

Bill

PS it said I had a error when I tried to post this, so I am going to try and post it.

Sorry, if it is a double post.

If you have a valid subscription for your Norton 2009 product, you are eligible for a free update to the 2010 version, and that will fix your problem.

You need to run the Norton Removal Tool (http://www.symantec.com/symnrt) to uninstall the 2009 version. You can install the 2010 version from http://www.norton.com/nav10

Also, please make sure that you do not have any other security products on your computer which is conflicting with the Norton product.

wayneout, with Process Explorer, please right-click on the busy ccsvchst process and choose properties. Within the Threads tab, select the CPU field to sort the busy thread to the top and then provide the Start Address information. This will help to isolate which technology is using up the CPU.

I forgot to mention that I have Windows XP sp3.

Right now, I do not have trouble with the CPU. Since I disabled

automatic updates for Windows, it has been okay. If it does

start to go up again, I will post the information.

I do have an up to date subscription to Norton. In fact, I have

about 300 days left on the current subscription.

Hi wayneout:

Why shut off Automatic Updates from Microsoft?

You should still upgrade to NAV 2010, as per Vineeth. It might do the trick.

This is not normal system behavior.
