128.0 Firefox Release July 9, 2024

Release notes are posted at https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/128.0/releasenotes/ and state in part:

  • Firefox now supports the experimental Privacy Preserving Attribution API, which provides an alternative to user tracking for ad attribution.
  • For users in the US and Canada, Firefox will now show your recent searches or currently trending searches when you open the Address Bar to get you back to your previous search session or inspire your next one.
  • Firefox now has a simpler and more unified dialog for clearing user data. In addition to streamlining data categories, the new dialog also provides insights into the site data size corresponding to the selected time range.

The experimental Privacy Preserving Attribution setting is enabled by default, so if you don't want to participate in this experimental data collection be sure to DISABLE the setting at Privacy & Security | Website Advertising Preferences | Allow websites to perform privacy-preserving ad measurement.

I often search from my address bar to quickly find a bookmark or site I've recently visited that is saved in my browsing history. I live in Canada and noticed a new (unwanted) section of search results listed under "Trending on Google" while searching from my address bar (see image below), and discovered that the setting at Search | Search Suggestions | Show trending search suggestions had also been enabled by default in FF 128 and had to be DISABLED.

If you have your Firefox browser set to clear your browsing history on exit I'd also review your settings at Privacy & Security | Browser Privacy | History | Clear history when Firefox closes | Settings, since the number of items you can enable/disable have been condensed from 7 down to to 4.  When I checked I also discovered that clearing of my Site Settings on exit was disabled in FF 128 and had to b RE-ENABLED. I personally preferred the old settings since they were more granular and gave you greater control over what was cleared on exit.

Here's a screenshot of my old settings for clearing my Firefox browser history on exit ...

... and what I see now in July 2024 with FF 128.
