Yup, i have tried the One-Click Support but still can't find the problem :-(
Suprisingly, i don't get an error msg when the updates fail. All it says is that i have the latest updates and therefore no updates are needed.
Specs :
PC A - Win XP SP2, 1GB RAM, updating normally.
PC B - Win XP SP2, 2GB RAM, not updating.
Jamok,
I am sorry but I can't understand you.
What do you mean when you say "all updates are not working."? If the software reports that the updates are current, then what makes you think otherwise?
NIS2009 and 360 are different products on different computers. If the pulse updates are randomly launched within a certain time window, then they won't connect with the servers at the same time. Moreover, 360 might be downloading product updates as well as sig files (likewise for NIS) so the content won't necessarily be the same either.
Can you try the steps in the document Definition Updates ?
Hi mij,
Sorry if i've been misleading about the situation. I'm having 2 machines both with NIS 2009.
I'm viewing the updates from NIS window --> CPU usage which will show all the background jobs.
On machine A, all the updates are running smoothly ie Liveupdate, Phishing Protection Updates, Pulse Updates. I have no issues on this machine.
On machine B, the updates are not updating on it's own. Even when i manually do a liveupdate, the response from the server says that updates are current. How can this be when i'm installing a NIS 2009 build 16.0.0.125 which has definition files from 28 days ago ? I have been using Vineeth's suggestion to update the software everyday. Downloading a 25MB update file and executing is pretty much a hassle. I rather the software do the updates on their own.
I do not have any other security or firewall softwares.
Thanks for the input guys :-)
Have you made sure that the system date is correct?
If you are still facing the issue, I suggest you to uninstall the Norton product using Norton Removal Tool. Then you can reinstall the Norton 2009 version using the link http://www.norton.com/nis09 .
Jamok,
I'm not clear what symptom you are seeing that would suggest that your definitions are out of date. Automatic LiveUpdate keeps your definitions up to date silently, in the background.
If you would like to check the actual version of definitions installed on your system, look at
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\Definitions\VirusDefs (XP) or C:\Program Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\Definitions\VirusDefs (Vista)
One of the folders will be in date/numeric format, looking like "20080922.001". Report back the actual number you see.
Hello all,
I've been having this problem with my laptops even since i've upgraded to NIS 2009. A little background :
PC A : Was on Norton 360; uninstalled and installed NIS 09. Everything working like clockwork; Liveupdate, Pulse Update, Phising Protection Updates, etc.
PC B : Was on NIS 08, uninstalled and installed NIS 09. Headaches came like clockwork. All updates are not working; tried manual Liveupdate but got message saying that all files are updated. How can this be when during the first install, the definitions files are 27 days old ?!! Then, downloaded Intelligent Updater (20080924-022-v5i32.exe) and installed a while ago. Updates working at first then went dead after 24 hours.
Now, i have both laptops side by side .... For PC A, it says that Definition Updates : 52 mins ago (9/25/2008 10:35:36PM) while PC B, it says that Definition Updates : 1 hour ago (9/25/2008 9:57:30PM) which was the time i ran the Intelligent Updater. Both are on the same network; PC A is on LAN while PC B is on wireless.
I'm at my wits end trying to get PC B to update on its own without me doing anything .... ARGHHHH .....
Can someone help me ?
Thanks in advance.
Hello Vineeth,
Yup, everything checked out cos before i installed the NIS 09, i was using NIS 08 and it was running fine.
Actually, i have installed and uninstalled NIS 09 4 times on that machine, the last 2 times with the NRT. Still gave me the same response. And after updating it manually thru downloading the 27MB file, i did a thorough scan and no viruses or malware were found.
Weird huh ?
Hello Chris,
On PC A, the folder is 20080925.020 while on PC B, the folder is 20080925.003.
And on PC A, Phishing Protection Updates is updated while on PC B, it's never run at all.
Thanks.
Is it possible that machine B is running a full-screen application, or doing something else that would prevent it from ever being idle? I'd like to try to determine whether this is a factor.
To make sure, I suggest you shut down every application you can on the laptop except Norton, make sure it is on AC power with a good internet connection, and leave it running for several hours unattended. Then check the definitions folder name again. If it is still "20080925.003", I'm sending a private message with steps to send me a log file.
Hello Chris,
I left my notebook running unattended for close to 6 hours. I set idle time to 1 min in NIS and no full screen applications were running.
When i posted the earlier definitions folders names, i had already left it overnight with machine A updated where else machine B was still where it was.
Thanks a bunch mate :-)
Jamok, we’ve looked at the log you sent and it appears that something in the machine’s networking configuration is preventing LiveUpdate from contacting our servers during the full LiveUpdate sessions. We are continuing to research what this might be.
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the update.
I've researched on this little bugger "mDNSresponder" which comes with iTunes and Photoshop CS3 which is from Bonjour Service and has this little string running in services : ##Id_String2.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##
Using a program called Unlocker, i found out that "mDNSresponder" ties itself to ccSvcHst.exe and i've followed the following steps to remove it http://www.brunotavares.com/2007/08/01/resources/mdnsresponderexe-what-a-hell-is-that-2/.
Guess what ? My Pulse Update is running as normal (at the moment) but Phishing Protection Updates has never been updated.
Will post back later on when i leave the machine to idle state and also rebooting it.
Thanks Chris for your help.
Update time :
Pulse update was running perfectly until about 2 hours ago.
Found out the intelligent updater's version is now 20080926.038 while on my problematic machine, it's still 20080926.025.
One Click Support says i have an error 8921,229 when i tried to do a manual LiveUpdate.
So, looks like i will have to continue downloading the intelligent updater until the automated updates work properly.
Cheers.
Hi jamok,
Are you still getting this error 8921,229? Do you still have to download the updates through intelligent updater manually?
Hello Tony,
The NIS updater eventually worked on its own .... Was getting updates every 5 - 10 mins or so .....
But after leaving the PC for a day (last update was nearly 17 hours ago), i tried to manual update it.
First response came back as saying no update needed as i have the latest updates (which i know was not correct as i'm having virus defe 20081003.038).
When i tried again, it gave me an error asking me to check my internet connection when at that precise moment, i was on MSN and browsing thru Facebook. Clicked on One Click Support and saw the same error 8921,229.
Thanks.
Some people are having Issues with N.I.S. 2009 at-the-minute.
Have you tried the One-Click Support? Also, please check your Logs ( "History" ) to see if there are any Errors; do you get Error Messages after the Updates Fail, if this happens? If so, what are they?
