2 Large Back-To-Back Virus Definition X64 Updates This Morning

I also am having this problem (running Win7 home premium 64bit on HP laptop, NIS 21.1.0.18) starting a few days ago. I removed and reinstalled, something like a 250Mb download, then ran live update and a 148MB (from memory) definitions file downloaded. Today I noticed I again had errors and tried running live update, but it keeps ending with errors. I've downloaded the 148Mb file again twice today (and blown the remains of my data for the month in the process, so now stuck on 64kb/s ;(  NOT HAPPY!)

I don't want to click on "FIX NOW" any more until this problem is sorted out, I certainly don't want to leave my computer running for the next few days waiting for that file to d/l at modem speeds, to find the problem persisting.

It fails on the processing of the updates.

A Toshiba laptop running 24/7 for weather station and solar data logger is not having the problem, nor is a 3rd laptop in the house on the same licence.

TIA.

Because of time constraints, I've only been able to  use the Remove and Reinstall Tool (successfully, I might add) on my fathers PC (NAV Version 21.1.0.18, Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1).

Also, because of my schedule (my Dad had recent open heart surgery), I've spent more time on his PC these last few weeks to observe this strange/anomalous NAV Virus Definition X64 Updates download problem.

But, as time goes on, we are seeing that others are having this very same problem.

NAV Version 21.1.0.18

And..

NAV Version 20.4.0.40

Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1

One thing to remember is that if you use the Norton Removal and Reinstall tool on the system with V20, you will be automatically upgraded to V21. If you want or need to remain on V20 let us know and we will talk you through that process.

It has happened yet again: NAV Automatic Live Update failed to install  Virus Definition X64 Updates (188.48KB), following the awakening of the PC from 6-hour hibernation period.  Norton Reputation Revocation List (3.01KB) also failed to update.  Norton Pulse Updates (482KB) successfully installed.

I then manually ran Live Update just 1 minute after the failedVirus Definition X64 Updates/Reputation Revocation List installation, and Live Update downloaded/installed a 149.81MB full Virus Definition X64 file!

NAV just/last did a full Virus Definition X64 file download/installation just 3 days ago (12/7/13 - 148.81MB))!!

Pulse updates seem to continue to work normally, but that is about all that appears to successfully/download  and install normally on a consistent basis.

FYI, FWIW, I've tried changing the "Automatic Resume Delay From Sleep or Hibernation" times from 3, to 5, to 10 minutes, thinking that perhaps ther were some backround processes running upon resuming from hibernation @ the 3 minute mark which may be causing the initial smaller NAV Virus Definition X64 Update failures. Unfortunately, this strange/anomalous NAV Virus Definition X64 Updates download problem has persisted on all of the various "Automatic Resume Delay From Sleep or Hibernation" time settings.

It has happened yet again: NAV Automatic Live Update failed to install  Virus Definition X64 Updates (2.84MB), following the awakening of the PC from 4-day hibernation period.  Norton Reputation Revocation List (8.421KB) also failed to update, as did Norton Whitelist (26.27), and Norton IPS Definitions (1.34MB).  Norton Pulse Updates (418 bytes), Norton Safe Web Statistics (2.69), and Extended File Attributes (10.24KB) successfully installed.

I then manually ran Live Update just 1 minute after, and Live Update downloaded/installed a 153.871MB full Virus Definition X64 file, Norton Reputation Revocation List (8.421KB) also failed to update, as did Norton Whitelist (26.27), and Norton IPS Definitions (1.34MB) !

Hi, DD. Is there any reason you let your computer hibernate for such a long period ? I use mine for around 6 hours per day, and then shut down overnight.

When I log on the next day, I run Live Updates manually. Often, the updates range from a few kbs, to several mbs.

I have had only one instance of the full definition download, and that presumably was because of a possible corruption.

As others have said, a frequent reboot often works wonders !

F4E:

Thanks for your reply.  This problem has happened with various hibernation periods, ranging from days to just hours.  I fear that something is corrupting the virus definitions  installation, causing the abnormally frequent but intermittent/occasional subsequent download of these large  full virus definition files, but how do I find out the cause of this virus file corruption problem?

DD

You could try setting your computer never to hibernate, and the hard disk never to be turned off in the Power Options, and then just shut down at the end of the day, as I do

Might be worth trying.

Thanks F4E for your reply.

The problem is, I'm not sure this issue has anything to do with hibernation mode.  This problem (small definition file installation failure, followed by full file download sequence) does seem to happen most often when awakening from hibernation mode.

My fear is that this same problem will happen when powering up the PC in the morning, following the full shut-down from the night before, per your suggestion.

I will continue to monitor and report back.

My computer d/l's the large anti-virus download quite often after the smaller one fails to install. However, I am running NIS 21 with the latest updates. I don't use Identity safe or antispam features. My computer is on 24/7, but the monitor does shut down. The hard disks don't shut down. I never use hibernation mode either. I have a relatively new computer, bought in Aug, 2013. We have 2 computers in the same household, but I don't know if it happens with my hubby's laptop or not. My son checks on his laptop when he comes by here or else will use Team Viewer to keep an eye on it.

My circumstances seem to be quite different except I do get those big definitions after the failure of the first attempt rather than Live Update trying to install them again to see if it would succeed then. I haven't been watching it as closely as Debbie does.

I forgot to mention that it is a win 7 professional with sp 1, no other real time security programs running and I try not to have auto-updates for programs running either Auto updates is running for NIS, but not the auto updates for the new program is turned off.

Thanks for your valuable feedback.  It is good to hear that I am not the only one experiencing this annoying problem.

I too am running the latest version of my Norton Product (NAV Version 21.1.0.18) on an 11 month-old 2013 Dell Inspiron laptop.

Also FYI, I've both reinstalled NAV Version 21.1.0.18 (using the Norton R&R Tool), and run Checkdisk/Scandisk (with no errors found) per the earlier suggestions of others here on this thread, and this problem has persisted throughout.

I too have asked my contacts to see if there is an update to Tony's post.

It has happened yet again: NAV Automatic Live Update failed to install  Virus Definition X64 Updates (313.19KB), following the awakening of the PC from 6-hour hibernation period.  Norton Reputation Revocation List (1.95KB), Norton IPS Definitions (1.08MB) and Norton Pulse Updates (563 bytes) successfully installed.

I then manually ran Live Update just 1 minute after the failed Virus Definition X64 Updates, and Live Update downloaded/installed a 155.81MB full Virus Definition X64 file!

NAV just/last did a full Virus Definition X64 file download/installation just 5 days ago (12/21/13 - 153.87MB), following another previous failed Virus Definition X64 Update!!

FYI, during the last 5 days (12/21/13 - 12/26/13) since the last anomalous Virus Definition X64 file download/installation sequence in which the smaller Virus Definition X64 file failed to install, followed by the full file download/installation, there have been many successful small/incremental/updated Virus Definition X64 file installations.

Also FYI, several of these successful Virus Definition X64 file installations during the period 12/21/13 - 12/26/13 have occurred immediately following the awakening of the PC from hibernation mode, so this problem is an intermittent one which seems to be happening when awakening the PC from hibernation mode.

Can somebody please investigate why these abnormal, intermittent, anomalous Virus Definition X64 file installation sequences continue to happen every 4-5 days!

Off the wall suggestion: Check the system clock for the correct time when it first comes out of hibernation.

Thanks yank.  Checking the system clock has been suggested on this  forum previously.  Unfortunately, in each case, the system clock for multiple users having this problem has been correct, including myself.

Hello DD

I haven't read the whole thruead, but what would happen if you didn't use hibernation? My computer is on 24/7, but I have it set not to go into hibernation. The monitor gets shut down. I get an occasional failure like every one in a while and sometimes I get the large d/l. Sometimes the automatic live update will try the failed download and it would work. Some times it takes an hour or 2, but it usually does come thru.
