Actually this thread was not moved to that location by a moderator because the question deals with the final product release, not with the beta.
I would also Highly-Recommend N.I.S. 2009.
Norton 2008 and Newer have Virus Definitions' Update every eight hours or so. Norton 2009 Products have the Added Feature of Pulse Updates, which occur ever five to fifteen minutes.
Also different from Norton 2008 Products is the Norton 2009 "Background Tasks". All these Background Tasks are Timed to happen every-so-many-hours. These B.T.s also means that, once your Norton 2009 Product is Installed, you can just leave it alone because all Updates Required to keep to Product up-to-date will happen. Background Tasks include: Automatic LiveUpdate, Norton Community Watch, Norton Insight Submission, LiveUpdate (Manual Norton LiveUpdate), Pulse Updates, Anti-Phishing Updates, Norton Insight Scan, Idle Quick Scan and Idle Full System Scan.
Also, Norton 2009 Products are the Lightest Norton Product yet on the system!
Compumind and Floating_Red summed up just about everything!
I have two computers that are on for about 16 hours per day and another which is on for about 8 hours per day.
All have NIS 2009 running flawlessly with little to no user intervention required.
Everything works as advertised!
Thanks all. I know its a good product (both NAV and NIS) and they have improved very much from what I read. I was mostly wondering if they are more designed with the frequent updates, for users who stay on 24/7. My guess is that a lot of people these days stay on 24/7 so was the design with us “all the timers on” in mind

Hi -
NIS 2009 is a vast improvement over previous NIS releases and it just gets better!
Trust us - you won't go wrong.
Good luck!
Things I love about Norton Internet Security 2009:
1. When I go watch my favourite TV show, NIS looks after itself and does the housekeeping.
2. I don't have to worry that my kids are too lazy to run the weekly scan. NIS looks after it for me.
3. Not even my kids have been able to truly infect my computer (although they did try)
4. I love the shortened scans because of Norton Insight.
5. I love the quick scans because they happen three or four times a day.
6. I even like it that I can slightly change the background colour of the main screen. Now that is frisky!
Hey delphinium,
"3. Not even my kids have been able to truly infect my computer (although they did try)"
Did they try rubbing your keyboard with a snotty tissue?
After all, it is SOFTware.
Like others here, I have no hesitation in recommending NIS 2009. I used an earlier version of NIS before that and it did a great job, but the current version is wonderful! It has so many features that I'd not had before and I'm more than pleased with it.
Regarding your query about it being more geared towards people who leave their PCs on 24/7, I don't know if that's the case or not. My PC is only on for 8 hours a day at the most, not all of that online either. I think it's suitable for everyone regardless of how they use their machines.
Yep,
24x7 is just fine, as long as your power is stable and environment is good.
I would set a task to reboot daily, but this depends on what you are running.
Check the NIS logs, 1x daily to ensure that all defs are being pushed correctly.
Cheers.
@ Notech Guy:
One thing I would recommend with long term running is to make certain that your case, whether desktop or laptop has sufficient cooling.
Most desktop cases have a power source fan, a video card fan and heat sink, and absolutely no airflow through the case.
A nice little program to keep an eye on heat and hard drive performance is Speedfan. It even helps with over-clocking.
A link to the website http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
An alternate site ishttp://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
Latest version is 4.37. Info on the website is that Norton may interfere with the download.
@ Compumind
My kids demonstrated that if forced, NIS will reluctantly download trojan parts. At least it was selective.
Hi -
All computer security needs a "layered" approach, IMHO.
NIS 2009 needs to be supplemented with on-demand scanning, for a whole bunch of things.
There's an old expression - "Don't put all your eggs into one basket!"
@ Delph
I leave my Laptop on 24/7 not on battery,I recently found out it naturally runs hot by googling the model number etc What damage can over heating do??
NIS2009 works beautifully left on 24/7.I do a restart when I remember and when NIS requires it as per the recent upgrades? Or patches? my 5cents worth as I'm feeling generous!
One thing I can tell you Mo, is that when Seagate guarantees their drive up to 60 degrees Celcius, they mean that it stops spinning at 61 degrees. When a hard drive expands from heat and sticks, very bad things happen.
There are a series of diagnostics in all hard drives, or at least S.M.A.R.T. drives that provide information on read/write errors,
spin up time, length of operation time. When a hard drive is warranteed for five years, they do not mean five years of 24/7. They mean five years of what they consider to be normal operating time. Running your 'puter all the time can shorten your warrantees because they can tell.
Speedfan reads your temperature for each hard drive, CPU, and video card and can adjust your fan speed up or down as necessary, and you can access the net for a comparison to other drives of the same make and model to see how yours compares. It helps to predict a hard drive death ahead of time.
My drives are cased in fans, I have a large one at the back as well as the one for the video card. She's a little noisy but my drive temperatures went from 60 degrees to 32 degrees Celcious. For the fahrenheit folks, that's a drop from 140 degrees to 89.
Thank you so much,I did not realise that at all.
I am considering moving up to one of the new 2009 products, NIS or NAV. I should say moving over as I had Norton products before, but switched. My understanding is both the Norton Anti Virus and the NIS for 2009 have more increased checks for updates.
Does that mean they are geared more for those who leave their machines on 24/7 or close to that? Actually I lave mine on 24/7 so I'm ok with that idea. Just checking to see since the updates come every 15 minutes or so if it is geared more for a user like me.
Firstly, I have no idea what the Fan and Fan Speed and over-heating has to do with "2009 products" - un-less the Laptop/Desktop was bought this year!
Anyway, I think you should be okay, mo, if you leave a window open a wee bit - in your house, not on your computer!
