3 Computer Subscription Used

I have Norton Internet Security 2011, the 3 computer edition.  There are no subscriptions remaining since it is installed on my 3 computers.  One of my computers is now retired and will be dismantled.  I have built a new computer and want to use the subscription key from the retired computer for my new system.  How do I inform Symantec that one of the 3 subscription keys is no longer used because the computer is retired.

General experience seems to be that uninstalling does not update the Norton database but dickevans is right to say to do it because it's something Norton OnLine Customer Support will ask you, I'm sure, when you get the normal message about exceeding the permitted number of activations when you install on the new PC.

When this happens just contact them via the CHAT route as below and from all the feeback we get they will sort it out quickly and painlessly.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down a little to see the CHAT button.

You can choose CHAT or Email; email or phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

You can save yourself some updating time by downloading an installation file for the current version of NIS 2011 as below:

New NIS 2011:

Click on this link -- NIS 2011   This will download a single file of around 90 - 100MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!

I imagine your new build will have Windows 7 on it -- if so I find it a good idea to run the downloaded installation file by right mouse clicking on it and selecting Run as Administrator since it seems to give more reliable results.

Note that if it is the 64 bit version and you want to use Internet Explorer the 64 bit version of IE is not yet fully functional and compatible with many toolbars and so Microsoft still supply the 32 bit version of IE on their 64 bit Windows! If it's not the default you can select it from the All Programs menu and make a shortcut to it on your desktop.

Please let us know how you get on ....

Thank you both for your help.  Since the old computer no longer boots up, I used the chat feature.  After about an hour, the Symantec tech understood what I was asking and changed  my account so that the old computer key could be used for the new build.  Thanks again
