360 causing computer to freeze

I downloaded the 360 standard about 1 week ago and have been having major problems ever since.  It now takes up to 30 minutes just to retrieve my e-mail and downloads are impossible as my computer freezes every time.  I went to the forum and found a similar issue and tried to download the program recommended (it erased all but the registration so you could start over and reinstall) but computer froze (2x's).  I went into my system programs to uninstall Norton 360 however, it "initialized" for over 1 hour and froze the computer (again).  I have to reboot my computer every time I use it and then, MAYBE, it will work.  Every day it's worse.

I am truly irritated right now!  HELP....

1. run chkdsk /f /r

2. post your operating system and release e.g. XP SP3

Ran check and rebooted.  Came back:

NTFS

Clear

I have Windows XP

Hope that's what you wanted....I'm no guru LOL

Well you open a cmd windows and type chkdsk /f /r and you will be given the option for it to run on reboot. You reboot and the chkdsk should run. I am not sure when you got NTFS clear.

Goto to control panel, system., general tab and advise what service pack you have instaled.

Windows XP, 2002, SP 3

Run, put in the check command you suggested, said yes to check on reboot, rebooted, came up "NTSF", next line "clear".  Then commenced to normal startup.

Since I did this, my toolbars are "funky" looking....blacked out in places, missing gaps...don't understand.

I dont know. I think there are issues under XP, so it does not surprise me that you too are an XP user.

The funky may be a graphics driver issue. YOu really need to post a screen grab. Look for/at snagit, its a program that can capture any form of screen shot.

OK...so I shut down my computer (out of frustration) and now my toolbar is fine. (??)  I made sure that Norton and other frequent sites are on my "trusted" list.  Defragged and cleaned system.  All seemed OK....but I was not allowed to download anything from Norton (to delete product and try again) AND my e-mail was messed up :smileymad: Had prob with that until about 30 minutes ago and then it fixed itself ??????  SO.....now I'm still having the same problems I was having before I contacted the Forum.  I had absolutely NO problems until I downloaded this product.  I am frustrated, ANGRY, irritated and want this prob fixed!!  I should NOT have to download another product to fix YOUR product that should NOT have had the problem in the first place.

I know you are just trying to help and I really, really appreciate it a bunch, but I need a solution.

Thanks

Do you have any other security programs installed?

Windows Defender.  Nothing else.  This was already installed when I installed Norton 2 yrs ago and haven't had any problems until now....think there may be a conflict with new Norton?

There could be a conflict.  It wouldn't hurt to turn off Windows Defender to see if it is involved or not.

Turned off Windows Defender and rebooted.  Again tried to initialize N360 with the same result....nothing works (I let it "initialize" for 20 min, this time it didn't freeze comp but had to CTL/ALT Del to stop it).  How come the icon on desktop won't take me directly to N360...have to go thru programs.  Didn't do that before.  Does that help, give you any clue to prob?  Right now, I want this OFF my comp.  Afraid to download any "fixes" from Norton...scared things will mess up even more. :smileyfrustrated:

What Norton product and version did you have installed before you installed 360?

Is it the 2013 version you are trying to fix?

Can you generate a complete memory dump when the system freezes ?

Please use one of the following registry keys to initiate:

  1. With PS/2 keyboards, you must enable the keyboard-initiated crash in the registry. In the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters, create a value named CrashOnCtrlScroll, and set it equal to a REG_DWORD value of 0x01.

  2. With USB keyboards, you must enable the keyboard-initiated crash in the registry. In the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\kbdhid\Parameters, create a value named CrashOnCtrlScroll, and set it equal to a REG_DWORD value of 0x01.

You must restart the system for these settings to take effect.

Once the memory dump is generated in C:\windows\memory.dmp, please let me know.

Thanks,

Snehansh

Sorry for delay in response.....

I purchased the Norton prog at the store in 2010 and installed just fine.  I downloaded and purch the upgrade last yr.  I have the N360 standard, which I just installed weeks ago.  Don't know how to find out the version/upgrade info.

Thanks for trying to help!

Huh?

Sorry folks, I am not a comp guru nor am I a programmer :smileyembarrassed:, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.  I can do a lot of the basic stuff and figure some things out, but you lost me.....

'preciate your trying!  Still having prob with initializing and on reboot it can take up to 5 min for my screen to come up and often up to 10 to do anything with comp.  Still freezes on daily basis and I don't do a lot of games, have next to nothing on programs and very little internet.  Again, these prob NEVER happened until this N360 install.  I clean up and defrag regularly.

You seem to have started having these problems when you installed the 2013 version.

I would suggest reverting to 2012, V6.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrt

Download a fresh copy of N360 from here   www.norton.com/n360s_6
If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data.
Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel.

Reboot.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.
Import your Identity Safe data.

If you get things working again with V6, you might want to stay with that for a while until things get better with the 2013 versions.

Be sure to go into Settings and look for a setting for Automatic Download of Upgrade in Updates. Disable that option so it will not automtically upgrade you to 2013 for now.

Thanks for that info....but didn't work.  Everytime I attempt to download the prog I am stopped.  I can NOT download that prog.  Even went so far as to call my provider to make sure all lines/modem were in working condition.  I have attempted to download the removal program a total of 20 times and I am prevented from doing so.  Have shut down, rebooted, attempted to download removal program, and tried and tried and tried.....  FYI another person suggested it before and it did the same thing.

So what is up?  I can't remove, can't download removal program, have verified what is allowed/safe, turned off my other security program, verified modem et al are ok, cleaned and defragged, rebooted numerous times...now I'm more than frustrated.

If someone has to call me to get this fixed (free of charge!!), then let's do it.  I WANT THIS OFF AND FIXED.  I am going to attempt to download this program a few more times after sending this.

I noticed there is no icon for crying.

Can you run a full system scan in Safe Mode? To enter safe mode, press the F8 key repeatedly as your computer is booting up.

I would also suggest a second opinion scan using the FREE version of Malwarebytes.
You can find it here http://mbo.origin.mb-internal.com/products/malwarebytes_free/

This could be due to something as simple as a security setting in your browser that prevents downloads.  Can you be more specific about how you are "stopped" from downloading, including any popup notifications you might be getting about this?
