451 unexpected anti-virus error

Today I noticed the above error when I replied to 3 separate emails - what does this mean? I have Norton ISS 2010 and this is the first time I ever had a problem with OUTGOING emails - how do I stop it?

help,

Larafl

I've had the same problem today.  I've run a full scan and that didn't solve the problem.

Hello

I just Googled and found this. Maybe it will be helpful.

The 451 error code comes from the SMTP mail server (or possibly your
anti-virus program if it's set to scan outgoing mail). The 451 error
code in general means:
451 Requested action aborted: error in processing

Please check to see if any ports were changed by your ISP for outgoing emails or if your ISP is having any problems with outgoing emails. Antivirus email errors like this occur when your ISP is sending a message and your security program is reporting it.

but I am not using Outlook - I am using Thunderbird...

....and I am using Outlook 2010, not Outlook Express, so that link supplied above is not relevant and our problem appears to be more with Norton than the email client.

This same problem showed up today on my machine as well using the email client above and Norton IS 2010. Perhaps a flawed update?

Hi larafl and Nuttinbutdtruth,

The SMTP error code is not dependent on the email client you are using.  But since we suddenly seem to have three reports of this error code that has never appeared here before, I would agree that the alert is probably related to something going on with Norton.  Does disabling Outgoing Email Scanning stop the error?

Hi larafl and Nuttinbutdtruth,

What is your exact version of NIS from Help & Support > About? What OS and SP do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks

Allen

Hello

I wonder if there is a common ISP involved here and perhaps something to do with one of the Windows updates having to do with ,Net and Asp.? Don't know, just asking.

Windows 7 64 Bit, NIS 17.7.0.12, cfl.rr.com smtp servers.

The error message appears in a NIS window; and not consistent, so I am going to wait this out a bit longer before I disable the scanner.

Hi Iarafl, rusty4 and Nuttenbutdtruth,

It would be helpful if you would each provide the name of your ISP, as floplot has requested.  Also, if you could open Norton Security History and select to show Resolved Security RIsks and Quarantine, let us know if any threats that correspond in time to the email alerts were removed by Norton.

Checked history and quarantine. Nothing happened in the last 30 days. The provider is Road Runner.

Hello Nuffinbutdtruth

Can you please check with Roadrunner and see if they are doing any outgoing email server upgrading now? Perhaps they are doing some upgrading of their antivirus scanning of emails.

This problem has not occurred in the last 16 hours. I am considering it closed for me for now but I will be back should it happen again. Have not heard from the others, so perhaps it was temporary for them as well.

mine too

it only happened when I replied to an 'automatic email' sent out to a whole bunch of people - not to any individual in my address book.

not sure if they got it - but it has not happened again today yet.

just checked with RR and they are NOT doing any upgrading, so we are back to square one.

Hello

Well, that's 2 out of 3 that we know use RoadRunner, so I would say it was some temporary problem with their outgoing server or at least one of their outgoing servers.. Many times, the ISP will not admit to a problem on their end I have found out from my own experiences. I have many times found out after I have made a phone call to my ISP, the problem mysteriously disappears shortly afterwards.

Just a quickie  ---

I'm on RoadRunner.tampabay ..... and had no problems yesterday but this morning after collecting my email when I went to send a reply to an incoming email from a UK Government Dept    I got this error message:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'tvp.internationalqueries@gsi.gov.uk'. Subject 'Re: xxxxxxx, Account: 'pop-server.tampabay.rr.com', Server: 'smtp-server.tampabay.rr.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 5.1.8 - Invalid email domain for: tvp.internationalqueries@gsi.gov.uk [R0109008]', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

I'll give RR a call and see if they have any comment since I don't fully understand some of the things to check in OE that are suggested on the Internet after Googling on the error message:

Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

In view of the wording of the error message about "one of the recipients" I suspect it is misunderstanding the email address since there is only one recipient.

More later if anyone has any suggestions, I'll be back.
