I use Norton Security Suite from Comcast and today Comcast in my area went down.  No internet, no phone, no tv.  So I come on my computer and right away I noticed Norton auto protect was disabled. Do you have to be online for these services to work?

Another thing I recently bought System Mechanic from Iolo.  I also opted for another year and just today Norton tells me it can cause conflicts.  Why System Mechanic is only an optimization suite?   I don't have the pro and thanks for now telling me.  You should have told me the 11th when I downloaded and bought it.  Tough I am keeping it.

Hi,

Norton does like to be able to check with the servers at bootup to be sure all is well and current.

System mechanic does have an anti-virus component which can be realtime. If that component is running there is a conflict. If you disable the virus scan there should be no conflict.

Keep us posted

The standard version does not list any anti virus features.

ffwfire, I imagine that you are getting the incompatibility message because Norton Security Suite and System Mechanic are attempting to do some of the same things in the maintenance of your PC.

Thanks I only have the standard version of System Mechanic.  The pro version with the antivirus I wouldn't trust.  The incombatabilty message I only received when my internet was down and I couldn't run any features of Norton not even a scan.  Norton was scanning my computer for problems because it couldn't connect to liveupdate so it wouldn't run so it was trying to find a way to run even though it couldn't and that is the only time I received the message.

System Mechanic is good till Oct, 11, 2014 so of course I am going to use it.

The COMCAST NSS is a version of N 360 so it contains a bunch of utilities that may parallel those in System Mechanic so NSS may be pinpointing for example registry cleaning by another product as a potential danger since it could equally be an attempt to compromise the system?

Just a thought ....

Maybe but I don't use Norton's registry cleaner anyway.  Thank you for trying to help.

I'm just suggesting that Norton "security" is detecting something that it considers could be capable of attacking the system; not that you are using it.

For another example, Malwarebytes free version contains the interactive background AV element but it's only activated if you opt to pay the subscription and get a code ... but the elements are there all the time.

But it may be something entirely different.

Okay here is another question say you accidentally download a virus that blocks internet access how are you supposed to scan and clean an infected system if Norton disables itself when you have no internet access?  Thank you.

You would still be able to scan your system. The only compromise would be you would be scanning with the virus definitions as of the last update when you were connected.

You can also download the Norton Bootable Recovery for an emergency scan.

Norton should not disable itself when internet access is lost. If that happens you have some other issue we have not dealt with.

Try clicking on Support - Get Support to run  Autofix to check your installation and fix what it finds.

No, my Comcast version did and when Comcast restored the internet connection Norton turned itself back on.  I don't have any issue.  I scan my pc reguarly.

There is no way the problem is caused by System Mechanic and I am not getting rid of System Mechnic.  You would have problems all the time with Norton even if your internet was working fine.  It would not just magically turn on when Comcast fixed your internet access.  That was Norton.

And by the way I would also like to know from someone at Symantec why System Mechanic Basic is a conflicting program.

Hi fgfwfire,

Please disconnect your system from the internet and tell us if it turns off Norton.  I am curious what else (if anything) gets turned off besides Auto-Protect.  You are aware, that Auto-Protect can be disabled via the System Tray Icon and will produce a Red X on the Tray and a popup wanring - but NSS is not turned off -just not secure.

I have heard the "no way is the problem caused by" statement before.  Have you uninstalled System Mechanic to see if the conflict stopped?  A quick Google Iolo System Mechanic & NIS 2012 will provide this thread in which bleeper 24 answers some questions and also provides a link including a great deal of information.  A Norton employee does comment also.

Of course the bottom line is for you to do what you desire - but I am at a lose as to how much more assistance can be provided here.

I blocked all internet traffic with norton and nothing got turned off.  Everything was shut off before when the internet connection went out in Norton.  I couldn't even run a scan with Norton, but I could with Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware.  What bug disables Norton, but leaves SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes untouched?

I always block all internet traffic with the Norton Firewall prior to scanning with SUPERAntiSpyware or MBAM.  They do not need internet access for scanning.  Or am I misunderstanding your question?

Do you happen to use Tortoise SVN software? If so, there is a known issue that has been fixed with an update to Tortoise.

Hi SoJ,

I asked the OP to disconnect his system from the internet - simulating the internet from Comcast going down, and it appears the OP blocked all internet traffic with Norton instead and then noted that Norton did not shut down - as the OP said it did when they lost their internet connection at a time in the past.  Please read the entire thread and prthaps you can see what I was trying to get the OP to do.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but as stated prior in this thread - Norton should have run a scan (even without internet connection).  It may be run without updating defs prior to running - but it should run.

Just to prove my point to Yank here that my pc is not infected.  I pulled a plug from the Comcast box and made sure my internet was out.  Tried to scan with Norton it scanned and no auto protect did not go out.

Happened to be looking over Iolo's support site and found something stating that Norton is compatible with System Mechnic.

Fix it quick Symantec. So luckily for Iolo I didn't get a popup message when I downloaded the program.  It was only after having the internet going down and Norton disabling itself that I found out they say it wasn't.  How long is this error going to take you to fix Symantec?

I think I know what is happening here.

Whenever you run a Full System Scan on the computer, "On Demand", it runs the Live Update first.

No Internet. So Live Update failed. Hence, the first step of the Full Scan failed.

Yes. but I skipped liveupdate.
