I applied for a job through Indeed Careers, application was accepted and I was notified for interview, during interview I was hired and told they will be sending paperwork including W-4 and agreement to work and I would need to sign. W-4 asks for my SSN. Then they said they were going to send me a check to purchased the equipment I needed for my mini office and gave me instructions on how to deposit it and go to Best Buy to obtain the equipment. When I tried to deposit it in my checking account it would not deposit so I called the bank. After going the extra mile to check the company they told me it was a fake company. The SSN is in their hands. I contacted identifytheft.gov and they said there is nothing they can do. So now, what do I do to protect my SSN. Do I try to change it? Do I contact SSN to report? I'm afraid of something happening where they will use my SSN and wipe me out. What do I do?
just my 2 cents here
you should freeze your 3 credit reports ( free i believe)
you mentioned it was on or thru indeed careers, i would report this matter to them ( either by phone, chat or email, ask for the issue to be escalated to fraud or whatever dept)
if you are able to know there address perhaps you could file a complaint with the state attorneys office
you can also file a complaint with the ftc ( federal trade commission)
i would also change any pins and passwords with your bank and monitor it for any suspicious things
