A hole in Norton Security?

Like many people I use a webmail.  While Norton does not scan email of this type, it seems that at least the attachments should be scanned!  After all these are files that are being opened by other applications.  ZoneAlarm for example will scan all attachments prior to them opening in say Word or PDF reader.  According to tech support at Norton, The only way around this appears to be to download attachments, then scan them, then open them if they are safe.  Seems that ZoneAlarm is a leg up in this area. I have just come back to Norton after years of using ZoneAlarm, and I am now wondering if this was such a good choice.
