Hi Scoop8:

If you haven't tried it, the FileHippo Update Checker is a useful tool for checking for available updates for Adobe Flash, Macrium Reflect Free, Piriform CCleaner, Malwarebytes MBAM and several other free software programs listed here on the FileHippo mirror site.  I like this utility because scans are fast (2 to 3 seconds) and available updates are usually posted on the FileHippo site within a few hours of the official release on the manufacturer's website.

Update Checker will not automatically install updates on your system (a big plus as far as I'm concerned) but will instead display a list of available updates in your browser.  If you follow the link to the FileHippo download page you can either download the installer from the FileHippo server or click on the Technical tab for a direct link to the manufacturer's official download page.  I consider it a "must have" utility for users with limited or metered bandwidth who don't want multiple software updaters launching automatically on their system but still want to ensure they're aware of available updates.

Hugh,

If I'm not mistaken, only the IE included with W8 has Flash included.  My W7 IE 11 has still got to be updated separately.

thanks.gif for the FileHippo Update Checker link.  I haven't had the chance yet to install but that's on my list to do this weekend.

I believe Krusty13 is right.

Granted that I'm still unfamiliar with Windows 7 (recently installed on my computer previously running XP) which came with IE11, I'd always been convinced that FP was built-in IE11 (like in Chrome), regardless of the OS, thus I was quite happy I wouldn't have to go through the frequent updates, but I was wrong!  Also IE11 here on W7 has a separate Activex version, which however was automatically (according to my setting) updated yesterday to v12.0.0.77.

So as long as the automatic update works...  I remember that with IE8, at a certain point I'd problems with the automatic updating and since then I had to do it manually, uninstalling and reinstalling it each time. At a certain point I stopped using it and switched to Chrome.

The following info is from  http://forums.adobe.com/message/6200379#6200379

"Please note that both Flash Player for Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 8 are updated using different mechanisms.  Flash Player for Google Chrome updates will occur during regular Chrome updates.  Flash Player updates for Internet Explorer on Windows 8 will be provided by Microsoft though theWindows automatic update feature."

I think there might be some very useful information in this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/library/dn268945.aspx

although I don't see a direct answer to the question at hand.

Note the bit about:

Why am I having problems launching my legacy apps with Internet Explorer 11?

It’s most likely because Internet Explorer no longer starts apps that use managed browser hosting controls, like in the .NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0. You can get Internet Explorer 11 to use managed browser hosting controls again, by:

  • For x86 systems or for 32-bit processes on x64 systems:

Go to the HKLM/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/.NETFramework registry key and change the EnableIEHosting value to 1.

  • For x64 systems or for 64-bit processes on x64 systems: Go to the HKLM/SOFTWARE/Wow6432Node/.NETFramework registry key and change the EnableIEHosting value to 1.

For more information, see the Web Applications section of the Application Compatibility in the .NET Framework 4.5 page.

I think Rainbow_2's post explains it better.

Just to avoid any confusion the part of my post

about applications not working under IE11 was not intended to have anything to do with the Flash Player question as I thought I had indicated.

I included it because I have seen queries about things not starting up ...... including NIS ..... so it could be a question to include when that crops up.

I'll try to check more carefully on my system when the next Flash update comes out ..... should not be long !
