A way to delete backup drive faster? 4 days running, 2500 of 18000 deleted?! Really?!

The header pretty much says it. Between my CPU and my hard drive Norton is literally consuming my computer... I can only use one program at a time while it's running and I can't even let it go into standby.

It's the Norton Backup Drive on my internal C drive. I didn't use the backup feature but one day, there it was. It's taking up 60Gb on my hard drive and I want the Norton Drive completely GONE to free up space. Not just the files, the drive as well. I can't delete the files at all because every time there's an update of whatever software my computer auto restarts and I have to start deleting from the beginning again. After 5 days of running and 3000 of 18000 files deleted, I was very aggravated to have to start all over again. I've had to do this every time and I'm actually considering completely uninstalling Norton and using something else because of it. I don't know why it just suddenly created a backup drive w/o asking. Thanks.

I’m trying to delete by right clicking on the drive, going down to the file level in explorer, and right click/ delete on context menu.

Hi, evajung. I'll ask someone at Symantec to see if there is a quicker method.

Hi evajung.

I am a little surprised that you are using N360 as opposed to NIS if you do not want the backup feature so you might like to consider changing applications when your license next comes up for renewal.

However to try and address your current problems.  The first thing I suggest it that you should disable the backup feature.  To do this open N360 and then select "Settings" from the top bar.  On the right, you should then see a set of check boxes.  Uncheck "Backup" and "Backup Status Overlays" which should be the 4th and 5th.  Then restart your computer.  The backup should now be permanently switched off and it should not nag you to do backups in future.  If you are not using N360 to make backups, I hope you are taking backups in some other way but that is up to you.

Next, to get rid of your unwanted backup files open Windows explorer and look in the root drive of your C drive for the folder "N360_BACKUP".  This is the folder that you need to delete.  If you are concerned that deleting the whole folder in one go will take too long you can delete the internal folders one at a time when you wish.  If you cannot find this folder or if you have any further problems just come back and let us know.

I hope that helps.

Dear friend,

I Have the same problem

I´ve made a backup of about 120.000 files in Norton 360 BACKUP. (Windows 8.1)

After this I deleted in NORTON 360 BACKUP program only the backup process name, because i won´t do this backup again, but the backup files remained in the hard disc on norton backup directory

To save space in my hard disc, I decided now to remove the files in norton backup directory in the HD. I can´t remove them directly in Norton backup 360 program because as I said I remove it of the program, so I have to go to Windows Explorer to remove inside it the files

I selected the directory/files to be deleted, but for my surprise the deleting speed is too low (each 1 file deleting at about 30-60 seconds). Considering 120.000 files, the estimated time to delete all the files is 83 days !!!

I contacted Norton´s chat and they informed me that it´s normal this speed when deleting Norton backup files inside Windows Explorer

I don´t believe that doesn´t exist another way to delete faster !  It's unbelievable that Norton do it with your users !

I think it's actually a windows issue, windows has always had problems deleting a huge number of files.

Open a command prompt as administrator and use the RD command (Remove Directory).

rd C:\N360_BACKUP /q /s

Thats assuming the folder location is C:\N360_BACKUP, if it's on another drive you will need to change the drive letter.

evajung- You will need to first follow the instructions above to turn off the backup so that the folder is not still in use by 360.

Try disabling Norton's AntiVIrus Autoprotect while you are doing the deleting -- if Norton is checking the delete action every time this can monstrously slow down actions. In NIS it is right Mouse Click on the Noron icon in the System Bar bottom right, select Disable Autoprotect ... and choose the option Until I restart .... and then restart the computer when the action finishes or you have to abandon.

It worked!
I did not need to use the command prompt
I went straight to Windows Explorer, located the \ N360_BACKUP directory and deleted the same as administrator

Thank you all!

Dave come on, 83 days.... that is NOT a WIndows issue..

Well, actually I figured out how to solve all Norton related problems such as the backup drive, Norton sucking up system resources and basically eating my computer. I switched my OS to Linux Mint 16. It's easier to use than anything any book or person related to any Windows OS or program says it is. It's not "scary" or command line based and it needs no virus software or other protection whatsoever. Also, it barely uses ANY system resources. I installed it and it detected all my hardware right away. I was up and running in 20 minutes faster than I ever did on any Windows platform AND I still have Windows installed in case I need to use a program that's only Windows based (there are very few) like Kindle for PC. I didn't even have to do it manually. Linux asked if I wanted to keep windows and run it alongside Linux.. S0, problem solved. Thanks anyway. No more system problems at all and Linux is FREE as is most of the software which is just as good as Windows versions. Firefox and Thunderbird are preinstalled as are a lot of other full suites. Bye, to all the days spent trying to figure out how to fix anything Windows. Oh, and Malwarebytes found problems on Windows that Norton never saw. I used it to see if maybe my system was running slow because of malware. That was indeed part of the problem. But everything works perfect now. Even Plug and Play is harder on Windows. Don't let people scare you Windows users. Linux actually is better and it's easy to use. I'm happy I let my buddy talk me into it even though I was terrified I'd screw up my computer at first. X^D

Read the solution I found. It’s in this thread.

<< it needs no virus software or other protection whatsoever. >>   YET ....?.

Do come back in a few months time and tell us how you are getting on.
