Ability to turn Activity Map On or Off

I think it would be useful to have a way of turning the Activity map on or off. Many do not find it useful.

Also it has been brought up in the forum a few times that for those who have dial-up or limited daily/monthly download usage limits they do not want activity map downloads to take place.

So at the least there should be an option to turn OFF the downloading of any Activity Map updates. These updates do not increase the security provided by NIS so it should be optional.

Thanks for your consideration.

I agree with bjm. I think the activity meter is MORE useful than the activity map. If you REALLY want to include the activity map, just include a link to a website OR just a on demand map.

Great idea to replace the map with the activity meter or add another button for the activity meter to satisfy the people that want the map or meter. But  there should be an option to turn OFF the downloading of any Activity Map updates as AllenM posted. I'm for the meter, I never use the map.

I agree 100%.  I have a slow home Internet connection and don't want to have to download a daily Norton Activity Map Data update for a feature that's nothing but eye-candy.

I also would like to see options to turn off/on Activity Map, and turn off/on CPU Meters.

Bring back the CPU Meters, I used those for a quick view when my system was acting up.

Bring back the meters!!!

Bring back the meters!!!

Ummm...the direction of product development might suggest that the meters are not coming back.

quote:

In our 2009 products, we put the CPU and Memory meter on our UI. The reason was to show the world that Norton is lean and mean, and let our users measure it. In 2010, we introduced the performance graph, which lets you track your computer’s CPU and memory consumption over time, and also tracks installation of other products on your computer.

In 2011, we have taken it one step further by adding real time proactive Performance Alerts. We measure the four broad metrics of performance: CPU usage, memory usage, disk IO, and handle counts. If a particular process is taking too many resources, you will get a notification like this:

Bringing back the meter(s) is something else we’ve heard. Perhaps we can merge these two requests and offer the meters instead.

Thanks! Dan

Kill the map please.  Thanks.

Great to see symantec considering to bring back the CPU meters. If possible, please bring it back in the next version release. That way we don't have to put up the map till NIS12. Another thing is that, you could add an option to the bottom that include a CPU meter.

I have macular degeneration which makes reading anything on the screen very difficult.

Any animated visual effect is extremely distracting and just adds more confusion to the vision of persons with this disability.

The MAP display (and the other three Bright widget choices) are all a hindrance to us.

PLEASE provide a way to Turn OFF this section of the NIS display (or display a blank DARK background).

Thanks

I like Activity Map! Please do not remove. At least offer the opportunity to choose between Activity Map and CPU/Ram Meter

Id love a way to turn off updates to the map! :) Im low on resources and any little bit can help my hd and pc!

Agree.  Remove the Activity Map from NAV 2011 (also Classic) or add an option not to use it.  If you switch back to the 2010 type "meters", please consider changing the "fix now" button back to the 2010 design version too.

The option to turn off the Activity Map would suit me. Users who still want the map to be available would then still be able to leave things like they are now.

Whilst I was thinking about this, I realised its not the map I don't like, but the buttons underneath it.  I would like an option to display meters, or performance graphs and would prefer this to be controlled under settings or in a more subtle manner to the currant buttons.

I agree with the others - the map is not an essential feature and takes up an unnecessary amount of space.

Smart definitions on --- >> No activity map updates.

I do not see any reason why the old cpu meter should be again in NIS, you already have cpu and ram meter in the product...Learn to use what you already have. Old cpu meter was useless, slow and buggy. Using ctrl+shift+esc or the present cpu meter in NIS performance tab is much more accurate and useful.

I'm going to throw a monkey wrench into this discussion by suggesting an alternative to both the map and the cpu meter. What I'd really like to see is an internet usage display. Something that would  show your online activity stats... amount of bytes to and from your computer...(both current and monthly),  time on and off line and maybe, just maybe... throughput. To me, this would be something that would provide useful information rather than just sit there looking cool.

Perhaps it could be toggled with either the map or cpu meter or both.

I know, I know... I'm dreaming.
