Access to all Norton files denied - but services show running? Help!

I have an Acer Aspire 5610Z running Vista home premium SP2 and Norton 360V4 - well trying to run 360SV4.

I downloaded an upgrade, and it worked fine - until I rebooted the computer.  On reboot - the system tray icon is gone, and when I try to open any of the Norton folders using Windows explorer I get access denied errors, telling me I need administrator rights (which the logon I use has).  If I try and modify permissions (using the admin account) I still get access denied for every file in the folder.

I have used the removal tool several times, deleted all Norton entries from the registry, and re-downloaded and installed Norton.  On the re-install, everything works fine.  I have done multiple full system scans on a fresh download which all come back clean. Then, when I reboot, back to access denied.  When I look at the services running in MSCONFIG after the reboot, I can see Norton is running.

Any assistance would be so appreciated!! This is driving me nuts!!

Thanks!

Hello Archer61

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

When you installed your N360, did you run it as admin since you are using Vista? Are you running any other real time security programs?

Do you have any other security programs installed?

What was the previous security program you used before installing Norton 360 V4?

In meantime, you can try these steps:

1. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool.

2. Create a new Windows User Account with the Administrator privilages.

3. Restart the computer and log into the new Windows User account.

4. Install Norton 360.

Hello Karuna,

Yes I have tried the clean boot - also safe mode - still the same result (access denied), Norton appears to not be running, no icon in the system tray, and when I right-click the desktop shortcut it tells me the file has been moved and is no longer accessible.  If I try to navigate to the executable in the Norton folder, I get the access denied as well.  I have also tried to "take ownership" as an administrator for the Norton folders - access denied. It also tells me the owner of the Norton folders is "unable to display". Thank you for your help!

Have you tried a clean boot ?. Try disabling all the Non-Microsoft services (except for Norton) and all the start up entries from MSCONFIG. Reboot the computer and check the status of the Norton. This will help us to eliminate the suspicion on any 3rd party applications that can possibly be conflicting with the Norton. Could you please be more specific about the issue with the Norton with information like what happens when the desktop shortcut icon is used to launch. I mean have you noticed any error messages when you try launching the Norton 360 interface or is it just that you are unable to find the icon on the Sstem Tray ?

Karuna

Hello Floplot:

Yes I ran it as admin, and no other programs.  Defender is installed, but is turned off.

Thank you for your help!

Hello Yogesh,

Only Defender and it is turned off - previously I had Norton through my ISP (they call it Norton On-Line).

I have used the Norton Removal tool twice, and have done a fresh install both times.  Norton has worked fine both times - until I reboot, then I get denied access to all Norton folders.  I have also tried creating a new admin account, with the same result. I also have tried turning off the UAC, same result.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Archer61,

I will have to admit this issue seems to be a lil bit tricky :smileysad: .... But it's not that it cannot be resolved... Just needs a lil bit of thinking..... Well .... I can see that you have tried to uninstall and reinstall the Norton numerous times but still in vain.

Morover since the Norton service is still running in the background, it is obvious that the Tamper Protection of the Norton will not let you to make any changes to it's files and folders, when the application is still installed. But in your case, if I've understood the issue correctly, you are not even able to open the following folder  "c:\progfiles\Norton 360\". In this case it is clearly a permission issue of some sort.

Try to install the Norton in the Built-in Admin account that comes with Vista, then reboot the computer and check the status.

Incase the Built in admin account is not enabled, the following link should be helpful that tells you "HOW TO: Enable the build-in Administrator account in Windows Vista"

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555910

Once the Built in account has been enabled, Restart the computer in cleanboot with all the third party services and start up entries disabled. Download a fresh copy of the Norton 360 4.0 from

www.norton.com/n360s_4 for Standard Edition and

www.norton.com/n360p_4  for Premier Edition

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool from www.symantec.com/nrt before the installation.

Note: You can also try installing the Norton 360 in SAFE MODE as it is independent of the Microsoft Installer.

Goodluck :smileywink:

Karuna

Worked perfectly!! I enabled the built-in admin account, ran the removal tool (twice), clean booted in safe mode and downloaded and installed. Thanks so much!!
