Action Center Says Norton Off

About 10 days ago Windows 7 started reporting no anti-virus protection and no firewall. I did a lot of things to try to fix it. Re-registering a .dll. Called Norton tech and reinstalled Norton. Paid $100 to microsoft to clean system, they reinstalled windows yesterday. They said they'd call this afternoon and I'm going to request my money back, as nothing is working. I'm a couple weeks from my subscription expiring and wonder if this is causing it? I've been using Norton for over a decade but I'm about to get something else if I can't fix this, and I don't want to renew 2 weeks early to see if that fixes it and be stuck with this problem for a year. I need some real help, I've tried all the normal routes to get hellp from experts. I have an ongoing discussion with Microsoft Support Twitter. Thnaks to anyone who can help!!

Hi number-9,

I have never encountered a report of Norton becoming disabled due to a license expiration prior to the end of the subscription period, other than in cases where the system time is wrong.  So I do not think your issue was caused by an erroneous subscription problem.  There are many instances reported of the Action Center failing to recognize an installed security program, both Norton and others, however.  You don't mention if Norton was reporting that it was working, in which case, there would have been no trouble with Norton and the issue would simply be a problem with Windows seeing that it was installed and running properly.

Then why did renewal fix the problem? Don't forget I had Norton techs on my PC two times and Microsoft once and they found nothing wrong. I talked to Twitter Microsoft Support and ran down a bunch of trouble shooting experiments. I installed new Windows in case of registry or .dll's being corrputed. Then BOOM, renew and it's fixed. Weird maybe, I've had Norton for over 10 years, but this is what just happened.

Was Norton reporting that it was turned off?

No, I also presume it was a false flag. Norton said it was working. But Microsoft said not to disable action center. What a mess of a week. I just had neck surgery and sitting at the PC is killing me. I think I was protected by Norton, and I had to renew anyway, so it's all good.

You installed New Windows?  Did you do a factory reinstall?  That may have fixed the problem.

I did a factory fresh install to solve the problem yesterday, but it didn't fix the problem. I was sure it would. At 2:30pm today I renewed Norton and Action Center acknowledged Norton was protecting me immediately after. I'd like to understand what happened too.

Did you simply renew Norton, or did you reinstall the program on the PC as well?  Since Norton had reported itself as working, renewing it would not have changed anything that would have affected its operational status.  And Action Center is only reporting if the product is operational or not.  It seems clear that Action Center was reporting incorrectly, and that the operational status of Norton did not actually change due to the renewal - it had been running all along.

I reisntalled it and renewed it. I tried reinstalling it last week to solve the problem but within an hour Action Center reported it off again.
