Activation Key Failed

I bought a Dell Netbook for my girlfriend, and as part of the deal Norton 360 version 5 Gold Edition came withh it. We have tried to install the activation key that came with this, but there was a free 30 day Norton trial already on there. We waited for that to expire and tried again, but the same message came up- "This is not a valid product key and cannot be used to activate this product". Am not sure what the next course of action is now, as the netbook is not protected whilst this problem is ongoing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't see many PCs with Norton 360 preinstalled -- mostly Norton Internet Security -- so you would like need to uninstall that and clean up as in the instructions below.

You can insteall from the CD you bought but then update to the current version by running LiveUpdate several times with a reboot inbeween until it tells you that you are fully uptodate because the CDs are not changed from the original release and there have been several major updates since then,

This link: Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the current Symantec Norton Removal Tool. Download and Save it to somewhere on the computer where you can find it again.

Then unintall the Norton security program in the usual way from Windows Remove Program. Restart the computer and then run the Norton Removal Tool

After that install the copy you bought in the usual way and follow the instructions to Subscribe/Activate it which involve creating a MyNortonAccount and logging into it. If you did one already for the trial version when you tried to activate that then use the same account.

That should work but if not let us know and give us the version of Windows you are using with the Service Packs installed and whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit.

Did you by any chance buy this Dell Netbook from PC World in the UK? I am looking at a description of this N360 Gold Edition which is available. When I look at the different things that are available in this Gold Edition, to me it seems like the various products in the gold edition would conflict with each other. If there is 1 activation key for all these products, I think I could see why it would fail. Are you sure that you picked the correct product choice that is in this Gold Edtition for the key which you have? I see that there are many different programs that are available with the Gold Edition which seems to be only available in the UK.

Remember someone else buying from PCWorld ....... ?

I agree that more information is needed but it looks to me as if all the extras in the Gold Edition are optional downloads using the Gold Card rather as if it were a prepaid credit card?

I hope we get some feedback including what happened if the OP did go to CHAT.

Hello Hugh

Yes, I remember the other user buying from PC World in UK which was why I asked that question. This is also the reason for my other question which was brought up about chat. As far as the options in the Gold part of the program, if one of those other products were downloaded and was tried to be activated with the N360 key, I don't think they would work either. I assume those other products listed are like trials, but the user has to realize that the various trials can't all be used at the same time and would need to get access to the other companies to get a removal tool once that trial is over..

Let's hope that the PCWorld connection doesn't automatically stop people from replying <g>

I think Norton 360 5.0 Gold edition is Norton 360 Netbook edition with additional gold card for free services/utilities. So, you can download the Norton 360 Netbook Edition from the following Symantec KB:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

Then install the Netbook edition and use the Product Key from the CD for activation. Let us know if this works for you.

There may be a netbook version of Norton 360 Gold but it definitely is not limited to that. Here's the more details from the PCWorld website in the UK:

Symantec's Norton 360 Version 5.0 Gold Edition is able to detect and protect against viruses, Trojans, spyware, and numerous other threats by scrutinising files and applications in real-time. New downloads and programs are analysed before you run them on your computer.

This exclusive version comes with a Gold Card, which entitles you to a range of additional benefits at no additional cost. These include free PC Tools Threatfire (lifetime licence), free PC Tools Password Generator (lifetime licence), free Norton for Netbooks (6-month licence), 50% off the purchase of PC Tools Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor and Antivirus (lifetime licence), and 10% off the cost of Norton's online data storage 5 GB, 10 GB and 25 GB options.

Your PC's performance also benefits from Norton 360 Version 5.0 Gold Edition. Applications which are having a detrimental effect on system performance are identified, so you can keep your computer running at full potential.
