I use Norton 360 backup to back my business files onto an external drive.  Most of the work I do for my clients is in auto cad which produces .dwg files, .dxf files, and .dwt files.  Is there a way to add these file types to what is backed up by 360? It would take forever to choose each file individually.

I had been using the back-up folder option to back up my client folders in their entirety.  Norton placed their little back up icon next to all of these files so I assumed they were being sucessfully backed up.  But after a catastrophic hard drive crash, I went to restore my 360 back up files from the external drive, and all that was there were the files of the file types indicated in the check boxes on the Backup interface.

That’s what I had done.  The icons indicated that everything was being backed up even though when I checked the drive I couldn’t see  any of those files.  I did a trial restore, and it seemed that the .dwg files were there.  But after my hard drive crash, when I went to restore from the 360 backup file, none of the drawing files were there, and I was also missing backups to any of my photos (.jpg) shot after March.  My crash occurred in August.

Were you looking for these files in the restore flow, or are you looking ofr them in the location (Z:) by file type?

I'm not sure that I understand your reply.  But I went to the restore function and searched under *.dwg.

Since installing the new drive this method provides no results.

Sorry for any confusion.  I meant to ask if you were browsing for these files in the “restore flow” or if you were browsing through windows explorer.  Are you able to browse to the files in question and just not find them in a search?  Are all other files and folders present in the back-up, just not these?

I went through the entire restore process, and these files didn’t restore, and were no longer present when I searced in the restore flow.  They were never present when I just did a windows explorer search of the drive.

Do you have more than one backup set listed?  Or do you see more than one encrypted backup set through windows explorer?

Only one encrypted set.

I have to apologize as I've been unable to reproduce this.  When I run that same scenario, all sub-files and sub-folders are backed up as expected.

Afte reading your reply I again tried to restore from the back up drive.  On my previous restoration attempt I had to manually direct the restore program to the back up drive, where I selected the N360_BACKUP file.  This file restored but did not contain all of my data.

This time the restore program automatically found two files on the back up drive which it asked me to choose from.  The first was the same N360_BACKUP file I had previosly selected.  The second was called DJ85MV51.  This file had not shown up previously, and is not visible when browsing the backup drive.  Even when hidden files are displayed, this file is not amongst them.  So I chose to restore from it, and I'm elated to report that all of my files were restored.  This has saved me from having to approve a  $1000.00 hard drive restoration that I was currently in the midst of.

Thanks for your help.

I have a similar problem - I want to add certain file types which are not on the standard list.  However I don’t want to add entire folders as described in this thread.  Surely there is a simple way to access the list of file types used by the backup selection function, and edit and add to this list.  This capability is available in other backup programs that use this file type selection method and with it’s rich history of excelent utilities I’m sure Norton (Symantec) would have added this capability too - I just can’t find how to do it!

In Norton 360 version 2.0, there is currently no way to modify the file extensions included in each backup category, however you can select an entire folder or set of files you want backed up. If you know the folder, just right click the folder and "include" that folder in your backup.

By the way Norton 360 version 3.0 will include the ability to modify the file extensions within each category type.

If you select a top level folder in your "Add a folder" option, then it will grab all sub-files and sub-folders.  Choose wisely as it can potentially be time consuming to unselect items if you added things you don't want (depending on how many items fall under that hierarchy)
