Adding trusted IP ranges

Hello everyone,

Due to corruption of my previous Norton (NIS 2007) installation, I removed it (using the appropriate Norton tool) and upon reboot I was informed that, providing I have a valid subscription to NIS 2006 or 2007, I am eligible for a free upgrade to NIS 2009 so I installed it and so far I am very impressed. But, and there's always (at least) one, apparently in NIS 2008 and 2009 the ability to add ranges of trusted IP ranges has been removed. According to the LiveChat agent, such feature wasn't very successful (aka popular, no?) so it was shown the door.

Not being able to add such IP ranges puts me in a very uncomfortable situation, because having them as trusted is imperative for me to be able to access storage and printing facilities available on the network. Now I can add individual IP addresses as trusted, close but no cigar. Would someone be kind enough to shed some light on the matter please?

Many thanks :)

On the netowork map you can change the trust level for the entire network by the edit link, I would maybe try that first, than looking up in the firewall configurations....

Thank you for your reply.

I have to say that I will be reluctant to set complete trust to the entire network, the whole point of adding certain IP ranges is that you don't have to give every node a green light. Also, editing trust levels isn't possible if you aren't connected to this network, while before it was possible to add IP ranges without having to connect to this net.

So far this is the only downside to NIS 2009 that I have noticed, but it's a biggie...

Hi Ivan,

Can't you try to create a General Rule in Firewall for particular range of IP Addresses?

You can try to create a general rule in Smart Firewall to open the particular port and then check the connectivity .

1. Start Norton Internet Security.
2. In the Internet pane, click Settings.
3. Under Smart Firewall, click Configure next to Advanced Settings.
4. Under Advanced Settings, click Configure next to General Rules.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Add Rule wizard, select Allow, and then click Next.
7. Select Connections to and from other computers, and then click Next.
8. Select Only the computers and sites listed below, and then click Add.

9. Select IP Address Range, enter the IP address range and then click OK.
10. Click Next.

11. Click All Types of communication(all ports, local and remote) and then click Next.

12. Click Next.
13. If you want the logs for this rule to be saved, check Create an event log entry, and then click Next.
14. In the "What do you want to call this rule?" box, type a name for the rule, and then click Next.
15. Click Finish
16. Click Move Up to move the rule to top, and make it a higher priority.

17. Click OK, and again click OK.

18. Click OK.

Let us know the results.

Hello guys,

Thank you for the info. I'll only be able to give a go over the weekend, but as soon as that happens I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers
