Norton AntiVirus 2008 contains Internet Worm Protection (IWP). IWP is an inbound firewall meaning that it only monitors traffic
coming into your computer. Unfortunately, this feature does not include
a way to turn off the alerts other then turning IWP off completely.

Do
you have another firewall installed on your computer, or do you have Windows Firewall enabled? If you do, and you want Windows Firewall (or the other software) to be the protection instead of IWP, you can turn off the IWP component.  Open the
program, click the Norton AntiVirus tab > Settings > Web
Protection > Internet Worm Protection > Configure and unchecking
the Internet Worm protection entry.

Whether worm protection is on or off I still get the message.  The only Firewall I am using is windows vista firewall and it is on but I tried turning it off and still get the message.  I also completely uninstalled and reinstalled my Norton software and still get the same message.  I also tried installing just NAV 2008; you can do that with NSW, and I still get the same message.  Just for diagnostic purposes I installed NSW with NAV 2008 on a laptop that I own also with Vista Ultimate and the weird thing is the Advanced firewall setting is not there.  What I believe has happened is there is some type of hidden file that NIS installed when I did the trial version of that and even though I ran the latest Norton Products uninstaller the NAV 2008 part of NSW is still reading firewall information from that.  The reason I think that is because I did not put NIS on the laptop and from an installed programs perspective that is the main difference between the two.  I use the laptop on the road so I keep both my laptop and my desktop pretty much the same.

What else can we do to diagnose the problem?  Is there a list of NIS hidden installed files so I can track those down and delete them?

The best solution would be to contact our Customer Support team:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/selectproduct_ts.jsp

Our team can chat about the issue, and if necessary remotely access your system to troubleshoot the problems. This would be the best way to get a quick resolution to the problem. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Well Tony, I took your advice and allowed your Customer Support Team to access my system to try and help fix my problem but the support was way less than supporting. First Srinath R, accessed my system and did all of the same things that I had done previously, deleted the program, ran the Norton file cleanup tool and then reinstalled all to no avail. Then instead of discussing what else we could do he just disconnected, this disconnect was not an accident, he didn't just disappear because it said Srinath R has ended communications. So I went back and naturally could not get him again and ended up with someone else that did all of the same things that Srinath did and I had done previously.

I have used Symantec products since Symantec has been in business and this is the first time I have needed help. I have been with you thru all of the Symantec and Windows problems and dealt with them even when your products slowed my systems over 50%. I have been a loyal user and Consultant to my clients for your products. I can't believe that with all of the resources at Symantecs disposal that we cannot come up with a fix for the problem. It is always easy to blame the situation on Windows or something else but it takes professionals to actually fix a problem that is not easily discernible. I have a lot of clients I Consult for and believe me when I say I do whatever it takes to help solve their problems.

LET'S GET ON THE BALL AND COME UP WITH A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I apologize that the Customer Support team was unable to resolve yout problem for you. After searching the Symantec Knowledge base, I found the following document:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton2008.nsf/0/2cbba5a949e45ddc6525734f005696d5

"If the status of the Advanced Firewall is shown as "At Risk" then it indicates that the non-Symantec firewall on your computer is either turned off or has a problem."

...which is probably something you've already heard. Just to be clear, you've stated that the Windows Vista Firewall is the only firewall you have on your system, correct? If you have the Windows Live OneCare Firewall, you may want to review the following document for information on troubleshooting:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910659/en-us

I'm sorry if I'm already telling you things you've tried or researched; I'm trying to get an idea of things you've already done and exhaust every possibility.  While there might be remnants of Norton Internet Security on your system, after both you and the Customer Support technician using the Norton Removal Tool, it's unlikely that the files/keys still reside on your system. If you have installed any other security software on your system, please let me know the name and version. This too might be prompting the Advanced Firewall to report an error. Thank you for your patience while we figure out the cause of the issue.

My windows firewall is working fine and I am not using the OneCare Firewall.  At one time before I upgraded from NAV 2007 to NAV2008 I did the Trend Micro Internet Security trial and did not find anything I liked so I used their uninstall tool (similar to Nortons Uninstall tool) to remove it and then upgraded to NAV 2008.  The NAV 2008 is thru my NSW 2008 Standard Edition program.  Also please remember that I have my laptop sitting next to me that I keep basically identical to my desktop.  The laptop also had the Trend Micro NIS trial installed and uninstalled and cleaned using the Trend Uninstall tool.  I get a green check mark on the laptop which I am looking for on my desktop.  This morning I hard wired the laptop to the Netgear Router I use thinking there my be some difference instead of using the wirelss part of the Netgear Router (I have even swapped connection ports between the laptop and desktop) but I still get a green check mark on my laptop and a red x on my desktop.  The only difference I can think of is that I did the trial for Norton Internet Security on my desktop and not on my laptop but I really don't thing that has anything to do with it but I don't know.  I have completely scanned my desktop for any leftover Trend Micro files in the registry or anywhere on the hard drive and they are not their anymore.  I have reloaded NAV 2008 so many times that the serial number will no longer activate my program if I do it again.

What do we do next?  I would be more than happy to give you-yourself access to my system but I am not in the mood to deal with the other support people for Quite a while.

Jim

I have the same problem.

I just did a clean install on a new SATA drive and NAV 2008 keeps telling me that I have my WinXP Home Firewall down.

The firewall is up and running and have done tests to prove it.

Here is something I noticed that may help.
On bootup NAV 2008 install and the icon shows the Firewall is up with a green check mark in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

As soon as my network verifies my cable modem and I'mm online icon shows up NAV icon changes to red and says firewall is down.
Wonder if it has anthing to do with my network card or cable modem setup.

I will continue to test.

Lets keep this going until we find a solution... OK

Yes, lets keep it going until a solution is found.  Personally I think Symantec should be doing more to help.   It's been 4 days since my last post and haven't heard anything else from the people we paid our money to.

Have you ever had anything ie, firewall, antivirus, antispyware etc installed other than NAV 2008?  I don't think that NAV 2008 is programmed to read a hardware firewall.  The way to test that is to unplug your ethernet cable and boot up without Internet access and see what happens.  Let me know how it goes.

I just uninstalled by network setup and had no connection with the internet.

I rebooted and disabled my the network card in my BIOS and booted.

The darn NAV 2008 still showed the firewall not on and it was.

So I guess we must continue this search within WinXP and NAV 2008

I have not uninstalled NAV and hate to do it but I may try.

I also may consider reinstalling WinXP SP3 and see what happens.

I also found many others on the internet with the same issues but no solutions.

Keep you posted

Well I just reinstalled WinXP SP3 and nothing changed.

I also have totally shutdown everything within NAV 2008 and rebooted and the icon still showedup with saying firewall off.

So I guess the last test will uninstall NAV 2008 and try to uninstall it completely.

Then reinstall

I am using Vista Ultimate and when I did the uninstall and reinstall even using Nortons Clean Up tool (you can look further back in this post) it did not do any good.

Are you getting a Norton Dialog pop up that says Windows Firewall is not installed or is it the Advanced Firewall at risk Notification in Norton Protection Center/NAV 2008?

Well I tried almost everything I knew without screwing my OS up.

I uninstalled NAV 2008 and installed Kaspersky 2009 for the time being.

I have never this AV program but I will give it a try for 30 days and see.

I have almost 250 days left on my NAV 2008.

I hope if I have to reinstall it the firewall problem will be corrected some how.

Keep me posted:smileyhappy:

UPDATE:

I uninstalled every and any Symantec software I had and cleaned my HD and Registry of every Symantec name.

Rebooted and veryified I was clean.

Uninstalled Kaepersky AV which was really easy compared to NAV.

Reinstalled NAV from CD and my firewall was up and running.

After installing NAV and rebooted as per direction I found my firewall OFF and NAV said so.

I turned it on but NAV still said no it wasn't up and running.

Verified firewall from my special website for testing and it couldn't get in because of the Firewal....

SYMANTEC why don't you guys jump in here and give us a little technical help!

YOU ASKED

Are you getting a Norton Dialog pop up that says Windows Firewall is not installed or is it the Advanced Firewall at risk Notification in Norton Protection Center/NAV 2008?

When NAV 2008 is installed I get a msg from norton AV that I'm at risk with the Firewall OFF.

I get no message from WinXP at all.
When I removed NAV 2008 everything was normal but as soon as Norton is installed it has a problem understanding or reading the registry that the WinXP firewall is up and running

Because this thread http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=1703 is closer to the problem you are having, I think!!!!

Still waiting for more help from NORTON/SYMANTEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jarcuri

This is a solution that worked my my system.

Hope it works for yours.

1. Temporarily disable the WMI service (Windows Management Instrumentation) in: Start ->Run -> type: services.msc and in there find and stop WMI
2. Next delete the C:\windows\system32\wbem\repository folder, wait for it to recreate (it can take a bit of time.)
3. Restart the WMI service & restart the computer

No, that did not work for me and I would advise anyone that has a lot of programs installed on their systems not to try that solution without having a complete backup they can fall back on.  I guess it works for some but when I tried it even though my original problem went away "advanced firewall at risk" it created for me the exact problem that it is suppose to solve, that is antivirus, antispyware and no firewall from the Norton Diagnostic System along with lost start files and other things gone for a lot of the program I have installed and need to run.

Still waiting on more help from NORTON/SYMANTEC!!!!!!

I totally understand how frustrating this is. Red x's drive me nuts!

This issue is on our radar here at Symantec and we're actively looking for a solution. Thank you for your patience as well as all of the detailed information you have provided to help us troubleshoot it.

Robert

Hi Jacuri -

I'm a product manager here at Symantec, and really interested in getting this problem resolved. To help out, I'm going to communicate as liaison between our NSW engineering team and you. We haven't nailed down the source of this problem yet,  but we have a couple of things to try.

Some background that I've gathered:

The "Advanced Firewall" option in NAV-NPC 2008 will only appear if the user has a 3rd party firewall on Windows XP, and it will appear on Windows Vista by default. We believe there are a couple of possibilities:

  • It is possible the WMI table from which the firewall data is read by NPC (Norton Protection Center) is corrupted or there is some logic error within NPC code. This could be due to NIS not correctly removed or Trend Micro not properly removed on its uninstall.
  • On Vista the problem could be due to the fact that outbound firewall option in Vista's Advanced firewall is defaulted to 'Allow connections' and that could be the reason for NAV in Vista user to show not secure. It may be good to check that setting.

Following are some other things we can try, in order to troubleshoot the problem further. Please make sure your data is backed up and safe before proceeding, just so we don't cause more problems for you.

  1. At one point I was testing Microsoft Onecare and had an identical sounding problem with the Windows Firewall status not being reported correctly. On researching the Microsoft boards, it appears this problem is so common, that Microsoft developed a solution to reset Windows Firewall settings back to the default state. I don't know specifically whether this Microsoft Utility will fix these problems or not, and I don't currently have the problem to test this against, but I think it might be worth trying out. The utility is located at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7ee728a2-3c67-4a12-8d7e-954e86233206&DisplayLang=en
  2. If that doesn't work, I'd like to work with you to get your CCDebug logs, and we'll have an engineer review them to see if they can further identify the issue. I'll provide further explanation for how to get these logs when you're ready.

I know you're probably anxious to get this resolved, so I appreciate your patience.

Best Regards,

Robert
