Not sure why my previous post lost formatting…trying to resolve.
First off thank you Robert for answering us letting us know someone is trying to work on this issue.
My information.
I installed a new HD and installed WinXP Home from scratch on the newly formatted disk.
I installed SP1a and SP3 updates from disk as per MS.
I installed my NAV 2008 from my retail disk with 215 days left on the subscription.
After upgrades of definitions and program from Symantec I rebooted and the following happened.
On bootup no problems except I noticed the red check on the NAV icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen and a square message box opened from NAV saying in short that yoour firewall is not up and you should turn it on.
I checked and it was on.
Oh. I'm using a cable modem and have no other firewall or security software installed.
I did shutdown my WMI services and deleted the wbem\respoitory directory. I waited and shutdown and started things up again.
Directory and service was reinstalled.
Now the red check is gone from NAV icon and all shows ok but a new problem now arised.
When rebooting the NAV window pops up and says that you have NAV 2008 off and should turn it ON.
NAV is 100% operational except for this momentary message window that pops up and then vanishes.
I also tried the onecarecleanup program and the onecarefirewallrepair programs.
After a good cleanup and reboot I ran the firewallrepair program and get the following message and the program stops.
"unable to find firewall engine MSI"
Hopefully this will give you some idea what has happened at my house.
Thanks Iggy
Robert, I solved my problem by installing the free Comodo Firewall Pro and the NAV 2008 Protection center reads Advanced Firewall Secure and I've got my green check mark. The thing I don't understand is even when I installed NIS I got the same red x, also when I installed the Advanced Firewall Plugin for Vista Ultimate I still had a red x.
I am going to continue monitoring this forum but as of now I have no warning dialog popups from either Windows or Norton!!!!
However if you want any logs I would be more than happy to send them to you.
Dear all,
I also have the same problem that you guys discussed in this forum. I'm using dell laptop with vista home basic installed as its OS. Honestly I don't have much knowledge 'bout computer program, but what I wanna share is....I bought NAV2008 in a package for 3 users. all of them were installed in to the three same specs of laptops (DELL-Vista Home Basic OS). but only my laptop has that "advanced firewall at risk" problem and the red x sign on the NAV icon, while the rest of them dont, and still I don't get it why the other laptops, "advanced firewall" is not appear in the NPC screen. For information, I was the one who install it first (in such like guinea pig I guess :)
Did I do anything wrong during the installation?I think I did follow the procedure correctly, I even set all the NAV and Windows configuration that I've known to the same configuration like the other, but it still doesn't work.
By the way, do Symantec have a representative office for technical support in Indonesia?
PS: excuse my english, coz I'm Indonesian :)
Regards
herrytan
No you didn't do anything wrong on your installation. Symantec is suppose to be working on this issue but we have not heard back from them in a few weeks. This problem is wide spread but we need to keep this thread going to keep it on top of the list. I'm sure others have this problem but have not logged in to say their piece as you did.
It seems the red check mark is in error and in fact your firewall and virus protection is on even though it says its off.
Hopefully we will have something back from Symantec shortly.
Keep a look out in this other thread.

Hello herrytan,
I'm sorry to learn that you are experiencing a problem with the firewall status alert. At the current time, we do not have a definitive solution. The problem appears to lay in the communication between the Windows Management Instrumentation (the part of the operating system that reports to the Windows Security Status) and our product. There have been various solutions proposed and the most successful efforts have been around validating and rebuilding the WMI, as mentioned in this Microsoft article. I have seen other forum posters report that in some cases you may need to do it 3-4 times.
I would like to ensure, for you and anyone else reading, that you can verify that the Windows Security Center is itself reporting that you have a firewall and that it is enabled.
On your second question, you can obtain language specific support by browsing to http://www.symantec.com and selecting your region from the options in the upper right hand corner prior to selecting your support options.
Thanks for visiting the Norton Beta Forums!
Matt
I recently started exeriencing the same alert, the only difference is I am running 3rd Party Firewall Software (ZoneAlarm Pro).
Heres what I was running prior to the alert
Windows XP SP2 (Firewall Off)
Zone Alarm Pro 7.0
NAV 2008
I then upgraded my XP service pack to SP3 and had problems connecting to the internet while ZoneAlarm Pro was running, so I unintalled ZAP and used my XP Firewall for a short period of time before installing ZAP 7.1, thats when I begin to get the alert.
Here is what I am currently running, diffrences are in red
Windows XP SP3 (Firewall Off)
Zone Alarm Pro 7.1
NAV 2008
Hi Boe,
Welcome to the Norton Forums. I'm sorry to learn of the problems you're encountering with our Advanced Firewall alerting. Can you take a the Windows Security Center (applet is within the Control Panel) information that your Firewall is enabled and report the status of your firewall - is it "green"?
Also, can you confirm the exact version of Norton AntiVirus 2008 you are using (information is available via the main program interface by clicking on Help & Support, then on About in the subsequent "Support" dialog, and finally on the Norton AntiVirus 2008 tab.)
Thanks,
Matt

Thanks for the quick response, I have updated the info and provided the information you requested:

My apologies for the late post but I fixed the issue, just in case it helps you support team out this is what I did:
1. Shutdown ZA (right click the ZA icon near the clock),
2. Wait 2-3 minutes,
3. Re-open ZA (from all programs –> ZoneAlarm –> etc)Let me know if there is any other info that you need.
Hi Boe,
I know of one thing you could do at this point: update your NAV 2008 to the latest update. Please let us know how this changes the issue for you. Thanks!
Thanks for the careful documentation, Boe. Glad to hear that the problem appears solved - it is my sincere hope that it remains so. Please let us know if you experience any change.

Is this still the valid thread for this issue?
My particulars: Windows XP SP2, NAV 2008 v15.0.0.58 (System Builder (366)), Zone Alarm Basic v7.0.483.000. When I restart my computer, sometimes (about 1/3), I get the Advanced Firewall At Risk status, indicated by the red "x" on the NAV icon on the status bar. This happens even though ZA is running. I clear the "x" by shutting down and restart ZA. (Since I can't shut down NAV, I haven't tried this.) Any word on a resolution for this? I'm ready to provide plenty of information to help resolve this, if it would help.
Jeff.
Hi Jeff,
In this specific situation, NAV is reporting what it is "seeing" via the Windows Security Center. The WMI does get corrupted and rebuilding the WMI table has been successful in eliminating this error. It's also possible that simply reinstalling ZA would re-build the WMI and resolve the problem as well.
I hope that helps.
Matt
