I’d like advice on reinstalling Norton Anti-virus. I don’t want a repeat of the ordeal I underwent yesterday when my computer repeatedly froze (could only move mouse cursor, couldnt click any applications, couldn’t control/alt/delete) after install from the norton website. The computer (home built) had been running the same Norton AntiVirus for years quite successfully, but got gradually slower over the years with likely registry error. So, I did a complete reinstall of Windows XP, loaded my motherboard, video, and audio drivers, loaded Explorer 8, service pack 2 and 3. I then installed Antivirus successfully and ran live update. After a reboot, I checked Windows Update for updates and the computer hung while doing so. I had to power off and reboot. I opened Norton and it hung again. I powered off and rebooted again and the computer hung within a few seconds. Unable to do anything, I restarted in safe mode. I saw that In addition to Norton Antivirus, there was also Norton Identity Safe. I removed both of these from add/remove programs. I then downloaded the Norton removal tool to eliminate it all. Interestingly, doing this took several times as I had to race to download things from the internet before the computer would freeze again. But, it was all to no avail, even after the removal tool. The computer repeatedly froze within a few seconds after booting. So, today I started from scratch and did it more efficiently so as not to create potential problems. Reinstalled XP, updated mobo, video, and audio drivers from disk, got help from Microsoft to install SP3 directly, got lots of Microsoft other updates, upgraded to Explorer 8, and updated mobo, video drivers from websites. I’m deathly afraid to reinstall Norton AntiVirus again so I’m asking for advice. I created a restore point. Perhaps I should install the Antivirus from the original 2006 version disk? Some other precautions so I don’t go through this mess again? Sorry for the long winded post, but an ounce of prevention . . .
Btw, my computer hardware is: Athlon 64 3000+ processor, 1.81 GHz, Foxconn NF4UK8AA mobo, 2 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 6600GT video card, Audigy 2 audio card. Also, I have a Norton 360 disk from my other computer and could download it instead if that product would create fewer problems.
Well, I successfully installed. No need to reply. I think loaded the microsoft updates efficiently (direct to SP3 which required the help of Microsoft phone support) and loading them all before installing AntiVirus probably made the difference.
