This post is by way of advice only.
Many contributors are told in this forum that when uninstalling Norton 360 they should use the Norton Removal Tool.(NRT). However, little or no reference is given to the use of "Budump.exe" or "BackupAOPSettings.exe" before uninstalling and before use of the NRT.
BUDUMP
Budump.exe is a downloadable programme from Symantec and its purpose is to preserve your backup settings to a data file. In this way after Norton 360 is removed, the data file still records the backup settings. Should you then or at any time in the future, decide to reinstall either version of Norton 360, your backup settings will be restored. The backup settings to which I refer are the Norton 360 Secure Online Storage backup settings. If you do not back up your files to Secure Online Storage, then this step may be skiped.
The file created by budump.exe is N360BUOptions.ini and it is saved in your application data
e.g. in WinXP
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
Budump and its instructions can be found in the following Symantec document
http://service1.symantec.com/support/norton360.nsf/docid/2006112909122875
BackupAOPSettings
This tool backs up your Norton Add-on Pack settings and migrates it while installing Norton Add-on Pack 2.1. Add-on Pack migration tool backs up the following settings:
AntiSpam settings
Parental Control URL List

SUMMARY:
Advice should be given about the option to run budump.exe and BackupAOPsettings.exe prior to uninstalling Norton 360, whether through Control Panel, Add/remove Programs, or by the use of Norton Removal Tool. Unless the contributor has no intention of reinstalling Norton's 360, or did not use Secure Online Storage then the use of budump.exe may be superfluous. Similarly if the user never added the Norton Add-on Pack or does not wish to preserve either antispam or parental control settings, then there will be no point in applying BackupAOPsettings.
Thanks are extended to Matt Boucher, Symantec Corp, and to huwyngr , Guru, for their assistance in providing valuable information.
You are right that Norton does have information about backing up settings using BUDUMP on its website but I can say from bitter experience that where one wants it is in large letters as part of the Installation Procedure, before you have in fact destroyed the information built up in the old.
My wife (and me too) is still complaining to me about Norton AntiSpam having to learn everything all over again after I updated from N360 V1 to V2.
In fact the function of BUDUMP needs to be built into N360 and NIS as a standard module, and not one you have to dig for.
It is possible to obtain the Norton Removal Tool from various sources (not exclusively Symantec). A user told to go get NRT may well either already have the NRT from a prior download or may source it without reference to a Symantec document. This is primarily where I see a problem.
Although the complete functionality of secure backup in version 1 and version 2 is not clear to me, it is conceivable that a backup of settings for a version 1 user would be important if then upgrading to version 2.
To support all the above I refer you to this document, in which it is possible to download NRT without any mention of budump.exe and this ftp site address address at which the NRT is downloaded.

I would not trust an older copy of SymNRT to be able to remove all the latest patches to the software. Since we are updating our products all the time, the Norton Removal Tool is constantly updated. Try this link:

This will direct you to the current Symantec Norton Removal Tool. Thanks!

As far as the Norton Removal Tool goes, there are instructions provided about running budump.exe prior to running the tool. Instructions.
