Adware.Gen

Hi,

I'm using XP Pro on a Dell Optiplex GX520 and have NSWP on subscription, which is set to download/update AV definitions automatically. Following a weekly full system scan it picked up this Virus threat on 15.8.09.

Affected Areas:-

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-288377101-3326294615-3082335143-1005\Dc324.exe

I Additional area:-

Unknown

It wouldn't let me repair or remove this but prompted me to the Symantec site to do a manual removal.  I followed the instructions to do this which included disabling the windows system restore, run an AV liveUpdate and then full system scan. Unfortunatley this didn't remove the threat.

Something else that's puzzling me is that on the NAV Risk Properties Box it list Adware.Gen as a low risk, whilst on the Manual Repair - Risks, it is High.

Having returned from holiday, today I ran a LiveUpdate and another full system scan with the same results. So far I've never had a problem with NSWP dealing with a virus. Could the fact that on 13.8.09. I installed a free version of Advanced SystemCare 3, be conflicting in some way and stopping NSWP from automatically removing this threat?

I would be grateful help and advice on resolving this problem.

Welcome to the Norton Community

It is not a good idea to run 2 AV programs on the same machine.

Try removing Advanced System Care and run Norton Scans again.

Have you tried turning off Windows “System Restore” and then rescanning and see if Norton can remove the malware? If this works, you can turn “System Restore” back on.

Thank you for the welcome to the Norton Community and for your help everyone.

I'd already disabled the Windows 'System Restore' as Symantec suggested prior to previous scans.

After reading comments here I ran a full system scan in safe mode but this didn't remove the virus.

Then I emptied the recycle bin and removed Advanced System Care in safe mode.

Re-booted and ran a full system scan in safe mode and this solved the problem.

I've now enabled Windows 'System Restore' and restarted the pc in normal mode.

Once again a really big thank you all for your pearls of wisdom. I can't tell you how pleased I am to have this sorted out.
