When I first rebooted after installing Norton 360 v2, all of my system tray icons were gone. However, from the Task Manager I could see that their processes were still running. I contacted the Symantec chat support, and they showed me that for some reason 360 had deactivated (unchecked) all of my startup items in msconfig. Now I have re-activated them, but many of my startup programs still don't display their tray icons (though the processes are indeed running).
I am certain that this problem was caused by Norton 360. Any help in resolving the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I forgot to mention, I am using Windows XP (Home Edition, if that makes any difference).
I have just the problem you're talking about. I have one user and no password-- though when I start up my computer, for some reason it stops at the welcome screen rather than automatically logging me on.
I did try logging off and logging back on, and that did solve the problem. I don't set my taskbar to hide icons when inactive, so that shouldn't be a problem.
It sounds like I'm not the only person with this problem. Has anyone found a fix, or do I need to manually log off and back on every time?
Thank you very much for your help.
Hello again,
there are a few reported solutions to this bug, what works for one may not work for others, but the one that works mostly is this:
Click start/My Network Places and in the left-hand Tasks panel, select "Hide icons for networked UPnP devices".
(If you're using Windows Classic folders you'll have to change the Folder Options to "Show common tasks in folders" to see this.
**This stops the display of the icons for these UPnP devices but does not disable the services.
If you are not using any such devices then you may have to try something else, just go back and choose "Unhide icons for ......etc etc
Other possible fix is to set your user account to have a password, which in effect is just as much as a nuisance in quickly logging off and back on, it obviously allows more time for the icons.
Last but not least is to use a startup manager program, giving delays between programs loading, free one here is good:
http://www.r2.com.au/software.php?page=2&show=startdelay
Startup Delayer.
See how you go as Hiding UPnP might just work first off ;)
I did as you suggested and hid the uPnP icons, and now the problem is gone! Thank you!!!
I do have uPnP devices on my network, but I don't have any need for their icons. *Sigh*, this is just another example of Norton hijacking an entire operating system in the name of "ease of use". I wonder if it ever occurred to them that a small percentage of their customers aren't dumb as rocks when it comes to computers.
Thanks again for your help.
Glad you got it sorted!
In defence of Norton (god did I really just say that lol ;) )
The problem you had could have kicked in at any point with the next program you installed ........... it just happened to be Norton.
It is a well known bug in XP and many users have had the problem and had nothing from Symantec installed.

Liverbird :D
Dylan you don't mention which operating system you are using?
If you are using windows XP this could very well be the known "bug" that effects the notification area tray icons.
It can be sporadic or the same ones that appear to suddenly go missing ...... the volume icon was originally the first to be reported awol but others are effected too.
In XP the problem is seen more so in setups where the user is the only user and has no password setup .... the pc boots straight to desktop.
It is thought that perhaps not enough time is given for all icons to appear although the actual processes are up and running.
A quick remedy and a test to see if this is what is effecting your pc at the moment is to just simply log off and then log back on to your user account.
All icons should appear. If they are still missing then it could be something else causing this.
Also check that icons are to be shown by right clicking the start button/properties/notification area tab/customise.....
make sure some of those missing icons are not set to "hide" instead of "hide when inactive" or "show".
Apply/ok any changes made.
